I was up early this morning, attaching the trailer hitch I ordered from Chuckster. Here are pics of the basic trailer ready to go to the DMV to get registered. Note the finished trailer will not look like this. I assembled it by the book to get it inspected and registered. Once I have the tag, I will modify it for my project.

Here's the hitch mounted on my Nomad. Installation was super easy and only took about 10 minutes.

Finally, here's the trailer coupled to my Nomad.

Dude! And you got it up before the temps hit 100o too!

Way to go!

I figured there'd be a little grinding of the bolt holes or something. You know how these things go.

It was still miserably hot. I wasn't doing anything strenuous, just sitting on a stool turning wrenches. My shirt was soaking wet. Done for now, I'm going for a ride!

Resident bon vivant and consumer of fermented grains.

I'm cracking up!! That is great CJ....I was such a consumer yesterday!!

Looking forward to the finished product {trailor}

You should have room for LOTS of fermented grain!!

Make the trailer watertight so it can hold some ice and a keg! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Harbour Freight?

Yep, that's a Harbor Freight utility trailer #42708, painted black to match the Nomad. Like I said, right now it has been assembled by the book. Once I get it registered with the DMV, The HF incandescent lights are going to be replaced by nice, bright LED lights, the trailer will be lowered, the tongue extended, and the cargo box will be added.

good job CJ. Too bad you have to register trailers like that in AZ. Utah doesn't require registration on trailers unless they are over 750 lbs. The 5X10 trailer I pull with my saturn (and occasionally load my nomad on) weighs in at about 550.

I have a 21' I/O Gulfstream boat we bought when we lived in Utah. As you said, you do not have to register single-axle trailers in Utah (that's what I recall, it may be under 750 lbs). I brought it down here to AZ, and tried to do the right thing and register the trailer and they (DMV) wouldn't do it without a title. There is no title, because Utah didn't issue them. 9 years later, my boat trailer is still unlicensed. I can't even sell the thing because nobody would buy it if you can't register the trailer. The lady at the DMV asked me "How do I know you bought the trailer with the boat. The trailer could be stolen." Incredible.

:) As a thought might want to repack the wheel bearing, as some of the new trailers have very little grease put in at the factory. Looking good, looks like fun. l

Hold on there, don't know about the DEPENDS. Just park near some bushes. Take it easy learning how to drive with that thing attached. Have fun.

Thanks, I did that as I assembled the axle. Cleaned out the crappy cheap imported grease and repacked them with Mobil 1 Synthetic.

Yessir, I plan to spend some time getting accustomed to towing the trailer with the bike locally in a controlled setting before I attempt a cross-country trek with it.

IMO Mobil-1 is not really a wheel bearing grease. It'll work OK, but will need to be renewed more frequently than real wheel bearing grease. I'd recommend short fiber grease or that blue stuff for boat trailers.

Really? Hmmm, I used the Mobil 1 because that's what someone else recommended. If it's not the right stuff, I'll get something else. Autozone didn't have a huge selection of grease.

I have that same set up it pulls real well, extending the tongue makes a big deference. i extended mine by twelve inches. I was not to impressed with the factory lights so i picked up some from carquest.

oh btw the grease i use in the wheels is made by lubrimatic (blue marine grease mentioned by caddman). availble at walmart. we use it heavily here at work. may be overkill on a little trailer but its damn good axle grease.

I need to clarify my statement C.J.: It'll work fine, and actually it could be argued that it's even better for a motorcycle trailer because, although it won't last as long, it lubricates very easily because it's less viscous (especially when cold.) So it would make the trailer a little bit easier to tow

Anyhow, I think you're OK to use it, but it just needs to be replaced about twice as often. Now what makes the others superior as wheel bearing grease is their ability to absorb shock loads. Mobil-1 won't be as good at that; but OTOH you won't normally have extreme shock loads because you won't be loading that trailer to nearly the load capacity of the tires and bearings.

I won't rush out and repack the bearings. I'll wait until they need it and then try a different type of grease if the mood strikes me.

...the grease i use in the wheels is made by lubrimatic (blue marine grease mentioned by caddman)....

Yeah. That's what I use in my boat trailer. Also it has Bearing Buddies so you can grease it quickly and they also help force out any water in the hubs. My other trailer has short fiber grease, which must be packed by hand.

So there's this trade-off: People will grease less often if it's hard to do. They'll grease more often if all they have to do is stick a grease gun on a nipple. If you're using Bearing Buddies, you certainly can't use short fiber grease. You can't pump the stuff, which is why it lasts so long: the action of the wheel doesn't pump it out of the bearings either.

Oh, heck no. They're greased! You won't need to worry about it for a few thousand miles at least.

Weren't you supposed to break those bearings in with dino grease for the first 600 miles and then switch to synthetic Scott?

I really want to see the finished product
