I purchased a 2007 Nomad on Friday October 26and I have to say that I am very disappointd with the mileage I am getting. I got 30 MPG on a tank of gas. IS this normal during break in or is this what I can expect to get all the time?

Congrats on the bike!
When we got our 05, I too was not thrilled with the mileage. But it does improve. I get about 38 - 40 on the road. I go about 65 - 75 and don't beat on it off the line. Remember, it is heavy and the windshield causes some loss of mileage.
Our Nomad has about 6000 miles and please keep a eye on tire pressure. I run mine 40 F and 44 R.
Others here will chime in as well. Be safe.

We all fret over mileage on new rigs, two wheels or four. Give it a few tankfuls, and keep track of all fuel used and miles driven to get a better average. You might not fill it the same each time no matter how good your intentions. Also try keeping the bike at or below 65 indicated on the speedo and you should get around 43 mpg. These beasts suck a lot of fuel when you open them up. Like rfl said, stay out of the throttle and you will be surprised.

Garydup. Don't expect to get 50 miles per gallon with this bike. 35 average after broken in. These bikes are so comfortable on a long trip we all tend to haul ass 75-90 on the freeway and the Nomad has the aerodynamics of a garage door! I can get 42 mpg if I hold the speedo below 70 which feels like I'm ready to downshift to 4th!

I didn't buy the bike to beat the high cost of gas. At 35-40 its still pretty stinkin' good compared to the average cage and a heck of a lot funner!

Blowndodge,
I have to agree about the comfort, when I was driving it home from the dealer on the interstate, I was just crusing along and when I looked down I was doing around 85 MPH. Big difference from riding my Suzuki 1400 which would have been screaming at that speed. As far as getting better than a cage I can attest to that I drive a Dodge 4x4 with 35" tires and a 6" lift and I get get around 11MPG

Just put over size "lowers" on and it would only get worse. The speeding that is!! I can relate to the crappy car mileage. I remember my 427 Camaro with 456 zooms. 6mpg.

nomad can drink up some gas, course I'm sure my need for speed e.g. 75 - 80 doesn't help. other day i took "beauty" a bit over 100, and had to pull into a gas station at the next exit. I do find after putting seafoam in, I get better gas mileage.

maybe I'll slow down some...then again maybe I won't.

I got 27 on my first tank, I was ready to drive through the showroom window.Even the dealer was surprised at the mileage, but he said it needed more miles to be broken in. Now I get 37-38 regularly and one time I got 40.5. I have found at least on mine if you twist the throttle mileage drops off some times 31-32. I love it and wouldnt trade it except for a new 08 Nomad.

Yep, its a thirsty beast when you run it hard. But if your not in a hurry to get anywhere then you'll be surprised how far it can take you.

Yes, the Nomad does like the gas. I get around 33 on my 05 and my friend gets about 34 on his. I have taken off the stock windshield and made my own bracket for a Harley batwing and also have added the Harley tour pac so I am almost a square block going down the road. The worst I have gotten was driving South in Utah on I-15 into a very strong wind. Almost full throttle all the time to stay at 80 and the best was 20 MPG. Since then, I have had a hard time getting past 31 MPG. Maybe my inlet air sensor has gone bad.

I'm in the same range as everyone else. 41-43 mpg if I keep it at or below 70 with a smooth throttle, neither of which is easy to do with the bike always egging me on. (There really should be a different speed limit for bikes. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif) I get a little better, sometimes 45 mpg if it is all back roads with few towns and I stay around 55-60 and just cruise along. Head winds and cold weather both decrease my mileage. My best was 53 mpg, going east out of the Rockies with a modest tail wind. My worst was 26 mpg going west into the rockies with a 30 mph head wind.

Also, you will get a little variation per tank just from variation in fill level due to the tilt at the gas station even if you are trying to top it off exactly the same each time.

Nobody mentioned city mileage much which I drive alot. Big cities with lots of stops can really eat uy mpg. I do good on most tanks to get 28-30 city. Once out on the road she will get documented 42mpg. I've never heard of just 30 miles total on a full tank? I thought I was reading a misprint. Mine never got that bad off the showroom floor. Seem a little thirsty to me(6 mpg)??

My mileage was off when I first bought her. Now I get 40-42 on a regular basis and that's cruising at 70+ on the highway. If you haul ass through the gears she guzzle the gas fast.

I get 28-30 city and 32-38 highway. But highway speeds here are 70MPH. I guess if I drove 55MPH on flat roads I could probably get 40+.

Come on lets all sing it...."I can't drive 55"

yea BD i read about your camaro but i was referring to garyup post on his new bike. he said he got 30 miles on a tank?? maybe he misprinted and meant 30 mpg. regardless Im glad the Nomad is NOT 6mpg or I would buy a bicycle.

I have been extremely with the gas mileage on mine. I consistently get 40 to 43 whether I ride solo or two up. My girlfriend and I spent 4 days riding Michigan's UP and I was running 40 to as good as 45mpg. It only seem too get in the upper 30s if I would run highways at 80+.

Yeah I can get 42 mpg at 70 mph+ and i suppose if you drove 55 mph you might get 45 mpg

When new & bone stock- 47 ish @ 4.5 litres / gallon - after PCIII / K&N / Vance & Hines Baggers bestest 38 @ 4.5 litres / gallon - now NO PCIII / with K&N / Vance & Hines with Harley Stock Ultra Mufflers 48 - 49 ish @ 4.5 litres / gallon. Also full Premiux touring package. This is @ 110 - 120 Kph or 65 - 70 MPH - do notice that over 70 Mph mileage drops like a stone.

I was a little disappointed, too. I went from a 2005 Suzuki C50T, that easily averaged 50+mpg, to a 2007 Nomad. I've got just shy of 2000 miles on it, and I'm averaging 32MPG, I've been lucky a couple of times and gotten 36. Then I thought about it and the Nomad has 2x the engine (1600 vs 805) and weighs nearly 200 pounds more. It's still better than my 91 Bronco, which gets 10MPG!

I don't doubt it was bro. How was the ride?

Ortega Highway...

http://www.theortegahighway.com/img/map/ortegahwymap3.jpghttp://www.birdingamerica.com/California/S.Calif%20images/ortegahwy.jpg

Even though the curves weren't that extreme...I wanted to close my eyes a few times...but thought that might make things worse... so braved it with eyes open!!! The view was beautiful so didn't want to miss anything....and I was glad that Nico took it easy...and didn't speed up to keep up w/the rest!!

I'd be thrilled to get 30 MPG. I'm getting 26 MPG - mostly in-town riding right now (daily commuter for me). Big disappointment coming off a 900 that was getting 48 MPG driving same route and same style of riding.

Everybody says it will improve though. I've only got 350 miles on it so far.

Mine is a '05 and I do good to get 26-30 mpg in town stop/go lights commuting to work. Hwy I do get 42 mpg. Stock bike, just V&H pipes.

Even when mine was new 7000 miles ago. Last June http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif I got 38 mpg. After break in I got 38 to 42 depending on how hard I used my right hand. I left everything stock.
Now I have removed the rear silencers and haven't ridden far enough yet to see what kind of mpg I am getting but don't think it will change much.

I get 34-35 average on the '99 carbed Killer Nomad.... and that's just the way it is!! ( I got the same on the 2000 Roadstar Silverado) http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
