Just a message for new riders when it comes to changing your own oil. I just did mine at the 1000km mark and just wanted to reiterate the point that you must remove the suction screen for the lube pump when dropping your oil. Not only does this give you a complete drain, but allows you to clean out the screen and see if anything bad is going on. Just FYI

This will explain a little better what voyager is talking about. I drain mine this way maybe once a year or after 3 or 4 times the normal way.

Drain mine that way every time. Don't even use the regualr plug anymore.

Same here JayC. Since it drains better and you can look at the screen for any signs of internal trouble, I see no need to use the regular oil plug at all. Just have to be careful to not over torque the plug or damage the rubber 'O' ring.

Good point. Drain normal way and then pull screen plug and you'll be surprised how much oil was still in there. Absolute must with first change--I had several peices of machining residue/chips on my screen, I think most do. The service manual does call for replacing the Oring, though. I have reused mine after close inspection but change every other time. They ain't cheap. I need to try and find a cross reference some day. After dumping in the expensive syn oil it would be a pain to have a leak. Once I forgot the crush washer and for the first time ever had a slow oil drip w/o one. Got angry with myself every time I saw it for the next 5K miles. As I'm not a high mile rider anymore this lasted way too long.

Bought an extra o ring and keep it in the tool box just in case.

Ok help me. Where is the suction screen at and do i need to level the bike or raise it up to do it

Left hand side of the engine just below where the drive shaft enters. It's kind of behind the frame, but you can get a socket on it with an extension. I usually prop the bike up on two hockey pucks, or block of wood. Once I get it loose enough, I put the sidestand back on the floor pull the screen out and let it drain away.

Towering, it really is easier to drain the oil with that. Now worrying about dropping the bolt in the oil. I didn't pull out the filter, but that's me.

For those new 900 kawi riders you too have a screen that needs to be checked and cleaned like our nomads do. Even though the dealer will say its not there like mine did back in seattle. I took him a blow up diagram of the 900 motor showing them the screen and boy did the service manager have that O shhiitt look on his face like they should have already known that ROFLOL.
