My Voyager (2013) is tucked away in the garage for the winter. Quite honestly at my age (55) this is probably the last bike I will ever own (I keep things a long time) and i have it set up the away I like it so I don't need to add anything to it. The biggest purchases I will make will probably be buying some updated Butler maps.

Getting ready to retire and made some things that will bolt on and plug in to the Vaquero for camping trips. First run equipment was tested this year and rebuilt. I can tent or Hammock camp (Hammock Preferred). Trailer elimination project went well with a converted Bike rack to use. Weight distribution is good. Plan to film a fast speed = stock to camp load out on uTube soon. Got my Enhanced Drivers license to travel into Canada. Hope the borders are open next year. Plenty of US destinations also. Time to put some miles on this beasty.
Plan to Visit ,Meet and Have a beer with some of you out there.
This is MY plan.

My 2015 Voyager is set up with about all I need. Pioneer marine stereo, Polk Audio amp and 6 1/2 coax Marine speakers, USB power/charging ports, strobing electronics for the headlight for daytime driving, Russell Cycles Daylong seat, Kuryakyn forward pegs, Hitchdoc trailer hitch, CSC Elite Trailer, Trickle charge pig tail, and I have the luggage bags for the saddle bags and trunk. I do want the add LEDs with a flasher for extra brake lights.
Could use a new winter riding jacket.
HOPEFULLY!! next year I won't hurt myself and be able to do my westward ride I wanted to do this year. Tore off the right bicep muscle and that put me off the bike all spring and summer. Being in Alabama, I have ridden the mountains Northeast of home for the last 7 years but I have only seen west of Mississippi on the interstates and in a RV. Wanting to take the side roads across the middle of the country and back through the south end. Middle and northern half the following year. BUTTTTTT, no offence guys, I have no desire to visit the eastern states above WV. I've got to stay healthy and not hurt myself doing the young mans stuff. Getting older is hard to except.

Man that hurts my heart. I love it that we can ride year around. Yes it gets cold here and we will have some ice in the mornings but most put the gear on and go.

Plan for this winter is to pull the engine out of my 1600 Classic and install the Mean Streak gearset, heads, throttle body, and other mods. Next spring I'll have a fresh stronger 1600, with my frame mounted fairing installed (which also includes the Vaquero gauge set), GPS, stereo, LED lights. Plus I'll get the Nomad hard bags installed, along with the tail trunk, I'll have a great one of a kind full dresser. Hopefully next season I'll have a bike worthy of a picture thread to highlight all the engine, chassis, brakes, fairing etc changes.

Been trying to get a rear tire installed for weeks. Main dealer I use had a fire and has shut the service dept and the next closest one has a waiting list of almost 6 weeks to install a tire! Other than that I have not plans but to ride. I did get a front/rear camera system as a gift last year, may have a go at that.

Bought my fourth Vulcan this fall, a Voyager. First Vulcan that I hated! Too darned top heavy which made slow speed maneuvering a bunch of hard work. Just the opposite of what riding a bike is supposed to be as far as I am concerned
So I swapped it for a 1700 Nomad. Putting a light bar, LED lights, Freedom Performance pipes, Chuckster's BAK, Ivanize and a Hitchdoc on it. Towing a Vision trailer on long trips.
Going to Arizona Bike Week, VROC Hil County rally. Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, the Arches and Las Vegas next Spring and Summer.

Agreed, Voyager is top heavy! But I don't hang out in parking lots much. Add an amp, larger speakers, cup and holder with a full tank of gas, and a trunk full of clothes while traveling, it can be a beast on unlevel ground,,,, with gravel under the shoe. But, I still love it on them long runs. Russell daylong seat and it's on for all day riding.
Make it yours with the little add-ons. Adds up over time in the wallet but makes it more better fun.

I'm Baaaaaaack!
Well, been out riding with all the good weather up until a couple of months ago....
I got snookered into helping a friend repower his 02' Nomad into a all electric scooter. Man, what a mess of wires! I did all the frame welding and fab. work, he should have it going in about 2 months or so....
Myself, been building my trike....almost have all my frame tacked up, was gonna do a 350 build, folks wanted a arm and a leg for them, finally decided to go with a 283, most all the smallblock parts fit, its not like I need a lotta horses powering this thing.
I acquired a set of old of Crager SS mags for the rear (S10) along with a set of Tbucket Mickey Thompson Sprint car tires. Transmission will be a shorty powerglide....
Am gonna mount my Nomad bags to the inside of the rear wheels to where the doors open to the inside.
Using a 01' neck and extended front forks, wheel/tie/brakes....
Slow progress, but its coming together....
Will be using all Nomad parts like the floorboards, tank, side panels, I've picked up about 6 rear fenders so I can cut them up and add pieces to the middle to widen them. Tank will house the aircleaner, Holley EFI, etc....

DL58 Two words that aged me ... Mickey Thompson and Crager.
I rode in a Mickey Thompson AMC car, wayback when,..... Damn that thing was fast. For its time.

12-03-2021, 11:12 PM
Yea mbarr, I was looking for the 304 AMC or the 340 something....don't remember the exact engine size....
Anyway, was wanting something that would drive a big heavy trike peppily down the road, and if I'm on the road, pick up parts at any auto store on sundays.
the little V8 has a lumpy rv cam, smallish 2bbl holley with alum.intake, HEI distr., block hugger headers.
Picked up the engine from a olde gent. who was gonna stick it in a TBucket. Got it for $550, Cragar SS's for $100....chrome has started flaking....he had the tires but they were like 25 years old, no dry rot, but got the newer ones. I have the Holley EFI with throttlebody, and the roller rockers, gear drive....
The trans is a powerglide w/B&M transkit in it, with a 12" B&M torque converter.
I was gonna use the old 3 speed man. that was on the 283, but I couldn't see myself trying to hold the beast on the side of a hill here in Wa with the clutch....
Anyway....once I get everything all test fitted together and blow it apart for paint I'll post some pics.
I'm installing a wood burning stove in my shop right now....tired of using little dinky electric heaters.
Anyway, I've been kinda thinking about the gears in the rearend, thinking about 3.23's....

Job completed. Had a friend do most of the work. Steering head bearings was the toughest
part due to the wiring in the light bucket because of the extra wiring of extras, such as tach, light bar and gps. Rode yesterday and I felt like bike handled better than when it was new. Seemed to be more stable in turns and tracked better. I noticed sharp bumps weren't as soft but it could be because of 15W oil in forks and 50 degree weather. Not uncomfortable though and definitely love the ride. It's nice to have the breaking in the front back as the leaking fork oil got on to the pads in one of the calipers. Bearings weren't too bad but showed signs of wear. About 60,000 on bike.

I do both, but this is more reliable information, searchable, easy to save things for later ( Maintenance I will need to do, problems I may incur, ECT)
I like the fact we call each other out over incorrect information. (I am Guilty, yet glad to not pass on wrong information) We keep it honest.
Or is it, I am just old and comfortable with the way things used to be? :hmm:
Looks like one long trip Minneapolis to Florida in 22 and a few weekend Camping trips locally.

the biggest challenge I am facing with this years mods is the Reckless fairing on the 1700 Nomad . to clear the trees risers etc. they stood the fairing up and away which looks stupid IMHO . I am going to mount the inner only and mark/cut/recess the area under the radio to lay the fairing back where it belongs then fiberglass in a box and repaint it . before fitting the outer back on . Pray for Me !!!
andyvh1959
12-19-2021, 05:15 PM
Check first if that fairing is ABS plastic. If it is, much better to make your mods using ABS sheet stock. ABS can be bent, shaped with heat, and bonded with ABS plumbing solvent or Acetone which is basically what ABS plumbing solvent is.
Once ABS is bonded with Acetone it basically becomes one piece. ABS can also be heat welded using a 1500 watt soldering iron and ABS filler rod (from Harbor Freight). Sure fiberglass work too, but it still only bonded like glue or adhesive to plastic. ABS becomes one just like welding steel to steel.
ABS sheet stock in various thicknesses are easy to find on ebay, and with some careful shopping there are good deals to grab. Just watch the shipping costs which can be much higher than need to be.

In 2010 Reckless fairings were Fiberglass with Gell coat. I used a marine armorall called "303" kept the gel coat from sun fade on my 2007 1500 Classic till 2016 when I got the Vaquero.
