Good Morning.
Do I remember you mentioning that you had a strange rattle as you started the season?
I also think I remember you saying it was something loose - What I can't remember is what you found or which thread that conversation was in.
What did you find?
I have a Rattle/noise which I thought was LIFTER/Valve caused by switching Oil brands. I switched to something else and the rattle didn't change at all. Now I'm thinking it's a Vibration somewhere. What I need to do is quit riding it and tear it apart and see what's down under there. I'll probably find a bolt loose or missing -
Thanks
Mike

Good Morning.
It was 3 of the 4 bolts fell out of the air cleaner cover, that was the rattle

Well that was easy - While I may have a few screws loose I did check that all 4 air cleaners bolts are there. This appears to be coming from up high engine, under tank area. It's not the Plasti-Chrome Naciel thingy buzzin.

Sorry you have not found it, But I know you will. Hopefully it is an easy fix. I will stay tuned, you have my attention now.
P.S. Do not go there with the OIL

Not sure what your headlight looks like inside but on my 2003 nomad I had a rattle and put some foam inside my headlight that took care of the problem.
Good luck!

Shoeney = Broken head light brackets do Occur on the 1700s too. Another possibility, yes
So Mike, Based off your suggestion to Smokier on his Aux Lights. Make sure you have all your wires run under the tank and maybe a few extras for the future before you try this. Get a can of expanding foam and fill the voids under the tank. RATTLE SOLVED.
But seriously we have heard the key ring, headlight bracket and such stories before so I assumed that these were all checked. Maybe a Plastic head cover is loose. That is about all that is under there, ?? SLIDE a WOOD shim under and see if it goes away?? Just don't start with the OIL again, PLEASE

I recently had a rattle on my Voyager and it was from what I had in the right glove compartment. Do you have anything that would cause a rattle in either glove compartment?

Damn Straight Jim, Sometimes it is just that simple and we over look it.

See guys - I would rather ride it and try to figure it out than to actually tear it apart and try to figure it out. I'm 90% sure it's not in the fairing. It started doing it a while back (about the time they changed the Rotella T6 formula) I attributed it as that was the issue. I did some YouTube searching and this was interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maZyPJIOknE After watching that I think I need to Drill some holes in the top of the pistons to reduce the Compression Ratio. Yea that's it.

I had a rattle , it was the covers on the glove compartments. they were vibrating when you drove . I put weather stripping around the cover where it was touching and it all went away.

Yes mine were loose also and I bent the locking tab just enough to make them tight when in the locked position.

Maybe Progress, I took the tank off the Voyager yesterday to make a Video on how to take the tank off for some folks over on facebook who were afraid to take their tank off. (am I rambling?) - Anyway, when I had the tank off I did some prodding around under there. The noise I'm hearing sounds an awful lot like a wrench hitting on the plasti-chrome head trim. I did see where there is a cable management clip holding the spark plug wires that was laying on the plastic cover. I jiggled the wires and man that sounds somewhat like what I was hearing. I jostled the wiring and put it back together.
Now I go out for a ride - pretty quiet. No rattle. Now I'm hesitant because - the rattle only occurred when the bike was HOT. (Temp gauge above 1/2). Due to a relatively Cool Day and The amazing work of Ivan - I rode the bike for 3/4 hour and the temp never got past the second tick mark. I even tried riding a little aggressive to heat things up (I thought there was a Rev Limiter on these things?) - Dang I looked down and the Tach needle was in the red numbers - Ooops) (Thanks Ivan) If nothin else I think I blew any carbon out of it.!
So - We'll see when it get's warm if I may have stumbled across my rattle.
Was that wordy, boy I hope that wasn't wordy.

Ivan gets rid of the rev and speed limiters
I used to rely on my rev limiter to keep me under control. Knowing these 1700s are not Rockets I still enjoy the acceleration.

I thought I remember reading that somewhere but I never pushed it to experience it.
Also, sometimes I talk more than I listen - (Or so my wife says)

Well I still hear it - Only when the temp get's above 1/2 on the meter.
Always the same pitch, tone - doesn't matter which gear. Worse at 2-2,500 rpm than higher. happens louder on steady speed than acceleration or deceleration.
I did some parts visuals today didn't see anything - I've never had the Plasti-chrome tank buzz on any of my Voyagers - Next time it stops raining - I'm gonna take it off and go for a ride.
My OCD makes stuff like this drive me crazy.

No.
Someone made a similar statement on this forum and Ivan jumped in and flatly denied tampering with the rev limiter, and asked 'us' to be careful of what we post regarding his service as wrong information leads to confusion. I doubt the Voyager even has a speed limiter.
I’ve hit the rev limiter on my 2016;Vaquero a few times about 6200 rpm lol but don’t know if there is one on the Voyager.

At 1/2 on the temp Gauge? Any chance it could be the Radiator fan?? or something in the cooling system.
And thanks for the tank removal Vid.

I'm a firm believer in "Back to Basics" - Take it apart, Clean and reassemble.
Yesterdays things.
#1 - Remove the right side Air Cleaner Cover - Amazingly clean - Shot some Deep Creek and cleaned it a little. Reassembled.
#2 - Removed Left side Air Cleaner Cover - Holy Crap - Looked like someone too mud and smeared it in my K&N Filter. I will say not all 4 bolts were as tight as I thought they should be. Strange thing - One of the bolts did not have a washer, Another bolt had 2. Oh and did I mention that the Rubber O-Ring was missing. - Well I've ordered one from my Dealer will be here soon. (Now - Do you think I was smart enough to look to see if O - Ring was on the Right side?) Let's not go there.
#3 - I also removed the Left side plastic cross chamber from between the jugs - Shame I wasn't starting a bug collection, Wow. Shop Vac time. Cleaned everything back up and reinstalled. Re-oiled the K&N.
Went for a 50 mile Lunch Run - Better. But I still hear it Every now and again. Twas a cooler day Never got much above 1/2 heat gauge.
#4 - On my 3 Voyagers -I've never had the Tank Plastichrome Buzz. Just in case that's what it was, I removed the Plastichrome Cleaned it all up. Went to AutoZone bought Chrome Door Edge Molding. Ran that up both sides of the Plastichrome and WOW does that look nice. Put F11 Topcoat on everything and reassembled. (I'm really liking that stuff)
#5 - Added the Edge Trim around my Trunk - Didn't do a thing for the Buzz - But It's Chrome and It actually looks nice.
Another 30 mile test ride - Even Better, May have heard noise once or twice on the ride.
I'll replace the O-Ring and let it ride for now. Time will tell if my OCD continues to hear it.
On the o-Ring - I might of had the Gear Shift Indicator fixed under warranty - We will just leave it at that. I know, I had installed the thing several times when I replaced the cover. I'm gonna guess somewhere in a garage someone is saying "Hey Man - I wonder if this part was important?" "Looks like packing material to me, just throw it away before someone sees it!"

You only ordered the One Gasket. This could damage your OCD ranking.:yep:
Funny how the air cleaner topic returns.??? Mud in on the side that the o-ring missing. Room for a rattle. I sincerely hope that will be your fix.
Do you have pics of the Door edge molding? Sounds interesting.
Still perplexed at the 1/2 heat gauge thing. I thought it could be when the fan kicked in. But must be a part that heats up and expands enough to cause a gap??

From his site he has this:
9) All power limiters removed
10) All driveability inhibitors removed

In a thread titled 'ECU off to Ivans', post #17 on 05/05/2017 Ivan clearly states the rev limiter remains at the stock setting.
Maybe someone with actual forum skills can copy and paste that here?
Makes no difference to me, I never rev the engine that high anyway.

Please be careful what you post guys... wrong/bad info gives the wrong impression..
Thanks and enjoy,
Ivan
Not sure why I pasted it here, but you asked. I thought your link was enough

Greetings, I think these comments are referring to the "getting too warm condition" in the stock ECU programming.
If you encountered that condition, you'll remember... :)

Well - Maybe!!!
I replaced the Missing O - Ring around my Air Cleaner Cover and So Far NO MORE Rattle.
The bike never got over 1/2 on my 40 mile food run but I listened real close - Zip - Nada.
Let's see what it does when the bike heats up enough to kick in the fan - That will be the real test.
Signed - Hopeful in Palmyra, Pa.
