I hoped we’d have them by now. Noel is working on them and I should have them any day now. We’re going off Trip’s rides with a few adjustments.

If we are doing the badlands loop, which I would think we would:tup:. I will have to adjust my ride in as I am going to come in thru that area. That way I can see as much of this area as possible.

Just checking out sections on google earth street view, it looks awesome.:yep:

I like this, the part going down to Rockyford(2) and Redshirt (40) looks a lot more scenic than going back 44.

I am looking forward to welcoming those attending the SC/NC Rally here in the Black Hills. I have been planning rides for the Rally and have found it difficult because we have so many options here. I am sticking with the basic four; Badlands, Devil’s Tower, Mt. Rushmore, and a combination of the Wild Life Loop – Iron Mountain Road – Needles Highway.

I know some of you will want to visit Sturgis (with a very good motorcycle museum) and Deadwood. I will have routes for that also.

I would like to know of the amount of interest in visiting the Mount Rushmore Memorial in the evening. There is a good restaurant, museum, gift shop, and sculptors studio with his scale model of the mountain. At dusk there is a talk and video about the sculpture followed by lighting of the faces. Then any military people are honored by being asked to participate in lowering the flag at the amphitheatre. It can be quite moving for those taking part. We could arrive late in the day to eat dinner, walk the boardwalk trail at the base of the mountain for unique views of the faces and take in all aspects of the memorial.

Also, if any of you want to see other routes you might not have seen in the past or are arriving early or staying longer please contact me and I will be glad to help with ride plans.

Keep watching this space, more coming soon.

Thanks Noel, I would be interested in going in the evening.
But I would want to arrive early enough to see the monument in the daylight.

Also, I would like to make GPS routes for the rides.
If you intend to do so that would be great.
If not can you post a map or give directions for the
rides so I can make them?

+1 one on an evening at Mt. Rushmore, but arriving early enough to see it by daylight.

Some of the rides posted earlier look like they would be short enough to get both in on the same day. Maybe even combine one of them with this to make a single day trip?

I would be happy to lead some other rides and I do have a few ideas for northern hillls.

I can't seem to generate a map that is small enough to attach to a post.

I have an all day ride that would allow some Northern Hills stops.

Leave Custer at 9:30 am to Newcastle, Wy
From Newcastle to Cheyenne Crossing(south entrance to Spearfish Canyon
Spearfish Canyon to Spearfish
Spearfish via I-90 to Deadwood
Stop at Deadwood for 1+ hour for lunch and tourist stuff
Leave Deadwood for Sturgis and Motorcycle museum (1+ hours)for those interested.
Leave Sturgis via Vanocker Canyon to Nemo
Nemo road back to 385 south toward Custer with a stop at Pactola and maybe other stops at Hill City.
This would be a nice scenic ride.

Nice to hear from someone else in SD. Your ride suggestion is a nice ride with good variety. None of the other rides pick up Hell's Canyon (from 4 corners to Cheyenne Crossing)
am looking forward to seeing you at the Rally.

When KawaNOW met in Custer, the family and I visited Rushmore for the lighting ceremony at dusk after the day's ride. The program of retiring the Colors was worth the return trip for sure.

There are two things I didn't get to do in 2009.... one was ride the Badlands and the other was seeing the lighting ceremony at Mt. Rushmore. Sounds like a done deal to me.

I am going to state the obvious. For those of you who are going to the night light program at Mt. Rush, look out for deer. Lots and lots of them at night.

A very valid concern. However, because right now everything is so green the deer are not congregating by the roads as much. Also, we will have a car in Custer and we plan for my wife to drive lead coming back from the monument.

Looks like there is some construction on Hwy 385 between Deadwood and Hill City this will make things interesting. Also anyone crossing South Dakota on state Hwy 44 will encounter some construction in eastern South Dakota.

I rode 385 on Wednesday. It goes to single lane for a few miles and is ground down to be resurfaced. Worst case would be about a ten minute delay. Really not a concern.

Cindy and I went to the lighting ceremony at Rushmore when we attended the rally out there. It was fun, they had a Park Ranger doing commentary, even had vets in the audience come down to stage for recognition.

Mid sixties is great riding weather! So are mid 40's, 50's, 70's, and 80's. 30's too if its been a while.

I arrived today. Nice and cool 67. What a relief after 4 days of riding in heat! Could have highs as low as 55 a couple of days.
