View Full Version : Who is going to Custer in 2009?
I thought this poll would be a good way to promote the rally by possibly persuading the "probablys" once they see all the "definietly wills" Hopefully it can add to the excitement.

I will probably go. I can't be definite this far in advance. Just like with the midwest rally, my brother decided to visit at the same time, and it is his first one. I don't foresee any issues, but who knows. Well, the other issue is vacation days. After July 1 next year, I get 4 weeks. Right now I have to make 10 days last if the rally is before that.

Sounds great, and what a great area!!! We go to Sturgis every year and stay in HILL CITY, about 10 miles from CUSTER. We stay at Crooked Creek Camp Ground. Great place, they have a Hotel, Cabins, space for tent camping and RV spots. They have a brand new pool, they serve pancakes and sausage every A.M and a Buffet on Sundays. The breakfast is during the Sturgis rally, but if we could get enough people there, perhaps they would do it then too. I know the owners well, Doug & Michelle, and they are great people who would love the extra business. They are bikers too, (Harley) but that's OK !

That sounds like a good Idea. We would no doubt have members that would prefer a hotel room and some members that would prefer to camp sounds like a good place.

I will be there for sure, it's in my backyard
I noticed there's no way to vote between "probably will" and "probably won't". I think I'm in the middle there with a "possibly" based on if the dates can change to a few weeks earlier.
Unlike Trip, I wouldn't have to quit my job and go on welfare, as my boss is quite flexible about vacation schedules. But my wife's job is unflinchingly rigid about schedules, and I wouldn't even consider going without her. So write me in as a "possibly", and that's just all I can commit to at this juncture.

I am a very strong "possible" for the rally next year. I am only 425 miles from Custer, so that definitely isn't a problem. As long as the date is somewhere between June-August, I will definitely be there.

If the truth be known, Judy loves to travel, but she really doesn't love to ride all that much. I'm pretty sure it scares her much of the time. I think she does it because she knows I like it, and because she is unwilling to let anyone think that she's not capable of it, and perhaps to prove to herself that she is capable. Also I think she trusts me not to kill her. That's a biggie, because she really knows little about motorcycles other than to lean with the bike, don't squirm, and to hold on for dear life when the need arises.
BTW, what is the possibility of moving the date up to sometime in June-August?
That's being decided in another post. You can go vote if you want to.

I voted definitely not because I just came back from there. It was a great trip. Watch out for the storms, though. We had storms every day, and hail every day. But it was mostly late afternoon.
I would like to tell you about a nice motel we stayed at in Custer. The Chief Motel. You can check it out here.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60865-d472164-Reviews-Chief_Motel-Custer_South_Dakota.html
The room was clean, and roomy (we had a room with 3 beds and there was still plenty of elbow room). There is an area where we could park our bikes that protected them from the weather, like hail. It is on the side of the building housing the swimming pool. You could probably squeeze 12-15 bikes under the overhang if everyone parked right. There were two clean old towel rags on our bike every morning for cleaning our bike, and they offered us more when we would ride back in the afternoon in the rain. The 1.99 breakfast is gone, the place burned just before we got there, and that's too bad because the restaurant next door had good food, but on the pricey side. They also provide a pass to Custer State Park while you are there. Only one pass per room, so we had to buy two more ($5 for a weeks pass).
All three of us agreed that if, or when we go back, we will stay at the Chief Motel again.

I am definitely going to be there. The Eastern Rally was G-R-E-A-T and I look forward to meeting everyone from the 'other coast(s)' and borders. The ride to get there will be part of the fun. I am trying to inspire the other Nomad owners in my area to join me. I figure that we all have plenty of lead time to plan it as part of a vacation. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I have one. GAS & DIESEL WILL be more expensive, but not too expensive to take the vacation of a lifetime. We are on no matter what time of year, how far, or how expensive. My grand daughter is already checking out Mt Rushmore & Yellowstone on her computer. She is so looking forward to the trip. I have the wife checking into buying or renting toy haulers so we can tow the bikes & camp enroute.

Once you get into the hills, there really is no bad road in my opinion. Two runs that I haven't done is 1) Devil's Tower in Wyoming and 2) The Bad Lands SE of Rapid City. I have driven thru the Badlands with a car but would love to do it on a bike.
