Anytime you put something on your paint dirt will get inside and scratch it. I hope it's an easy fix. Try some claybar.

No problem. I hope it works out for you. IF you drop the claybar on the ground throw it away because it may pick up grit and make things worse.

Beezer,, THANKS alot I never would have know that,, well I would have found out the hard way LOL
If you are going to clay bar, I would highly recommend Meguiars......reasonably cheap and very easy to use plus it comes with the lubricant (Meguiars quick detail mist) which you can use afterwords for quck "in-between" detailing. I've tried the other stuff and using a soap & water solutions just didnt' do it for me.
Only thing I will say is that if the scratches are fairly deep, a clay bar may not cut it. I would try Meguiars Scratch-X. It's a super light polishing compound which I use on my black bike to get rid of swirls. That plus a good wax will probably get rid of 90%.
Good Luck.
Another example of the wealth of knowledge on this site. You guys are very helpful.

I thought claybar was for removing contaminents in the paint. I don't think it will do a thing for scratches except to remove anything embedded in the scratch. I use the claybar's on all our vehicles then good wax. The detail spray is the way to go. When you detail spray a vehicle and run your hand through it, you can feel the stuff in the paint, and after you use the bar, it will be smooth as silk.

Beez you are right on on this one. I could not believe the small cord (rubber) going from my antenna for my J&M rubbed the paint down to the silver on my back fender (fortunately very small spot)...that's what happened small amount of dirt/grit under the cord....bummer.

I have a tank bib on and when I took the seat off yesterday to clean all around it I saw a big mess under the bib... wondering if there is anything to put down (not sure how well that clear stick on stuff works in the long term.)

I never fully understood why passenger crash bar chaps are put on. Just to cover the chrome? they sure don't block the wind from anyone's feet? Can't understand the draw for them....

BD, they have a purpose. They help keep bugs and rocks off the saddlebags, and some even have pockets to hold cans of BEER.
