I am looking at 1/2 helmets. I don't like wearing a helmet, but I know I should. My Mom said so.:tehe:
I find 3/4 and full helmets to be noisy and I am not worth a Shoei, to expensive. It is a quieter ride with no helmet, so I thought maybe a 1/2 would be a little quieter? LS2 has a new 1/2 helmet with a vent on top and a drop down smoked visor, Plus a bill so I can tilt my head down some when going into the sun. Is it a cooler ride in the heat?

I have bought several helmets from https://www.bikerhelmets.com/collections/helmets
They are small and DOT approved

1/2 helmets are definitely the coolest helmet you can wear in the summer. If you are looking at a touring one with the two vents above the visor, yes, they do help with the heat. If you are going to use any Bluetooth communication devices, the touring models have a zip/unzip skirt around the neck which usually already has the pockets built for the speakers. Make sure it fits snug, more susceptible to the forces of kinetic energy. Plus the skirt extends the helmet into an all season helmet allowing you to use them in cold weather as well.

I know my buddy's wife went head over handlebars from an accident and lost her face to the pavement.. Her other injuries were minor in comparison ... She has been in and out of surgeries for 19 months now getting reconstructive surgery and still has to use a straw..

If you survive the crash.. what you have to live with can be much worse..

It caused me to go for a modular helmet, a touring helmet for the first time in my life.. I lived in PA, where there wasn't a helmet law.. and I LOVED riding without one..
I went to a legal half helmet for travelling to other states. MD OC and all that..
Then that accident happened and I saw how this person's whole life has been upside down since the accident..
not trying to preach.. but just put a personal experience out there..

I prefer half helmets, but do own a full face modular for my long trips because I have my comm headset attached to it and you never know what you might run into on a cross-country ride. Rain, hail, locusts, whatever. I have a Harley half helmet made by HJC with a pull down shield that I really like. I also have a scorpion EXO-100 with the pull down shield. Both are excellent helmets.

There's always someone there to tell you of some awful outcome of a motorcycle crash, no matter what the topic at hand. Motorcycles are inherently dangerous.

I say wear what you are comfortable in.

Life is inherently dangerous.

I just try to keep the odds in my favor when I can.. ;)

Yes Mom, I get the drawbacks of a 1/2 helmet. But is it quieter???
Jeeezz. I'm still wearing a helmet, Mom.

She is gone now, but never forgotten. Never. And she's still in my head.

Find the helmet that fits. They come in round to long oval shapes. IMO a 1/2 helmet isn't going to do much based on the statistics of impact regions. Look up the hurt report.

I wore a 1/2 for years, a Scorpion with the drop down sun shield and a visor, still have it. Last year I went to 3/4 to get better ventilation on top of my head. I now have 3 vents in and 2 vents out on top of the helmet which is needed here in FL. With the face shield down it is much noisier than the 1/2 but with the face shield up it is no louder than the 1/2. My 3/4 also has the drop down sun shield and the full face shield can be removed/replaced in seconds. Ever since I was riding beside of and behind a semi when his trailer tire desentigrated I have worn the 3/4. May be a false sense of security but its a comfy helmet and I feel safer when I wear it.

ANY helmet is better than none, but if you are old enough to decide by your own, do/wear what you want.

In germany, we have a helmet law. I only wear open face helmets (also know here as jet helmets) on my voyager all year around. In summer, whenn really hot I use a 1/2 helmet, which is known here as a brain cap.

Just wear ear plugs. With my 3/4 helmet I can hear the radio better with ear plugs than without earplugs.

What he said

I have always worn ear plugs with my half helmet and now with my modular helmet and find it much easier to hear the music.

Ok I will try it, But what is the science behind this?? On the surface it seems like ? How would that work? Put in ear plugs to block sound and then you can hear the stereo (sound) better. What's up with that?

That is because you live in a helmet law state Jim. No Helmet is much quieter. But I need to wear one, CUZ things happen. Older is smarter, And I want to retire like you and ride.

I agree, the plugs cut out most of the wind noise and make it easier to hear the radio.
I wish I'd worn plugs years sooner, now I have tinnitus in both ears and trust me it sucks, constant ringing all the time.

I live in a state with a no helmet required law if you're over 21 and have health coverage.

I admit that 90% of the time I don't wear any helmet.

But 90% of my riding is on secondary and tertiary roads.

If I'm riding main arteries, or God forbid, the interstate, I always have a half helmet or skid lid with me.

If I'm going very far or overnight the modular goes in the trunk on the Nomad or the sissy bar on the Meanie.

Getting caught in a driving rain without a full face is not a good time.

Ear plugs do wonders for the wind noise as was mentioned.

Just find one that you are comfortable with.

If you're not comfortable in it, you WILL NOT wear it.

I had a bad wreck in 2011. I was wearing a full face at the time. Most of the damage to the helmet was to the face. These days I wear a modular and custom made earplugs.

Everything is bluetooth now. Just bought a 2014 dodge 3500 Laramie no CD player your suppose to plug in or stream. Still not use to it but its what tomorrow will be so we have no choice.
Suppose i'm very opinionated on the no helmet law will keep that to myself but at least helmet designs are getting better with the air flow for summer heat.
Other hobby is running a top dragster have incorporated a Bell cold air inducting on that one which makes life bearable in this coastal Carolina humility sitting in staging lanes in a two layer fire suit, but I have some fancy teeth from putting a car through the woods years ago when a slick/tire let loose right at the traps.
I like nolan products for street riding. . Model 42, 43, and 44s 103s with the smart lift as good riding helmets with enough safety you have something on your side if you do ever go down.
In racing our term is its not a matter of if, just a matter of when but if you have not made the move to plugs and bluetooth, takes a little getting use to but even us old dogs can learn new tricks.

43 years, still love riding daily. Wear a full face helmet. 1st lesson was truck rubber hit my collarbone. Had regular helmet with shield which just he up. Plus, others hitting face on the street. Knowledge + experience = wisdom. Wear a full face and good gear & gloves.

We have tunes going at work and when putting on the ear muffs when running something that is going to make noise I can hear the music alot clearer. So a lot of times even when done making noise will leave the muffs on because I can hear the music better and blocks out the other guys. Win win.
The other thing is I used to wear half helmet and after what I had seen and heard about them I wear 3/4 most of the time now. Winter riding I do full to keep me warm. Again I have noticed hear better with these helmets better than the half since you have wind flying by your ears. I work 3 miles from home so in the summer when we get in 90 degree Temps I will wear my half but longer/faster trips it's back to the 3/4.

I was in a back motorcycle accident in 1985. I had a full face helmet and i am positive it saved my live even though i still have a lot of scares from the accident. When i got back to riding I promised myself that I will always wear a helmet when riding and I do.

The other thing is to have the rain protection when I am out and about like MAS mentioned

Thank you all for responding to this post. I never really thought about some of the things mentioned. Cognition is important after a crash and the ol' lady pointed out Who F*%ks the face anyway. So I ordered one. She's a keeper. Thank you all, for your passionate posts and opinions. I do value them.
