I'm shopping for new tires and would like the front and rear to match but am having a difficult time finding the same make and model tire for front and rear in the OEM size. My bike calls for a 130/90/16 in front and a 170/70/16 in the rear. Its amazing how difficult it is to find a matching set. I've settled into Michilen Commander ll's, Avon Cobra's or Metzlers Ultra's but each one has a slight variationin size from OEM. I'm guessing that's its not a big deal but how much variation from OEM can I allow? For instance, the Michellin ll's have the front OEM size but the rear is 10mm wider (181/65/16). Will there be any fitment or riding issues with this size?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Michelin will fit. Seems also, that the michelin is the most long lasting motorcycle tire for the 1700.

Here in germany, the law about tire size is a lot more different and more difficult than in the USA.

Here you only get 2 Bridgestone tire versions, the Michelin, a Dunlop and an Avon to be streetlegal.

Best choice would be the Michelin - will be my next tire.

Greetings,

Many of us are running the Michelin's. The size variation is acceptable. Agreed, finding an exact match for the OEM sizes is nearly impossible when switching brands...

I love Michelin's for my car, and I would still take my chances with the rear 180/65/16, but I have seen many people says Michelin will not stand behind the tire for our bikes with the 170/70/16 because they says it's not made for it. Bike shops say it will work well and many are using them.

Here in germany, where every change (even just 10mm wider tire) must be approved by our DOT, you get a special permint from Michelin, that allows you to use this backtire without visiting the DOT. So they stand behind their product, because it is not easy to get such a permission from our DOT.

That's interesting that they stand behind their tire in Germany but not in USA. :ohno: :wtf: :bs:

That being said, I have their rear tire on my bike and will soon have the front tire also.

May also look into the Shinko 777HD tires. They are in stock sizes and are a good deal price wise. $180 for front and back.

The Michelin works fine on the rear, 19,000 miles on my first one. 8,000 so far on my second one.
