View Full Version : Ivan's ECU: To BAK or Not to BAK first?

Have an appointment to do Ivan's ECU reflash. The program is different depending on whether you have a BAK. I'm debating whether to add both or just the new ECU. I have stock pipes and will not be changing them. What say you? How much does the BAK add once you have the new ECU if you have stock pipes?

If you keep the stock pipes I would not go with the BAK. If you have a BAK you need better air flow at the exhaust end.
My setup is all stock except for RACNRAY's Throttle Mod. After the re-flash I'm very happy how my bike runs and won't be doing any other performance mods.

Greetings VulcanD,
What JDHog said. Air in equals air out.
If you are going to keep the stock pipes, keep the stock air...
Ride safe,

My 2010 Voyager benefited greatly from installing a BAK and Cobra Powrpro even though I left the mufflers stock. Without the BAK I was dissapointed with the Powrpro but with the BAK added later the difference was very noticeable.

I have debaffled stock pipes, Chuckster's BAK and the standard Ivan Flash. Works great without the ping that some encounter. I am told you only need the upgrade if you ride hard and over 4000 rpm frequently. I can confirm as I rarely surpass 3500. I'm going back to a stock airbox as I'm sick of hearing the BAK's hammering noise.

I also got a big bump in power on my 900 with the BAK and Powerpro even though I kept stock pipes. That experience made me think that the conventional view that BAK does no good with stock pipes is likely wrong. However, I don't know how much of the gain on my 9 was the BAK vs. the Powerpro.
You'll always get more performance from slip-on free flowing pipes over OEM full of catalytic converters, but if you prefer the sound of stock, your reduction in performance is probably no more than mine when I went back to the OEM intake with K&N filter - 6 of one, half a dozen of the other?
I still say (like I did on the other site) that you should seek Ivan's advice?

Peg, what was the final verdict on going back to the stock air intake? (Noise, performance, MPG)

Agree with you both. A BAK with stock unaltered pipes does have a benefit, but a fuel processor (or ECU flash) is needed. I am very happy with Chuckster's BAK and the EJK (Hammering H8BUGZ??? I barely notice any difference in the sound, just more power when the fuel is adjusted with the EJK. I still have the left cover on, though. Could that be the difference?).

My BAK makes as much noise as my exhaust. LH side open with no decorator plate or OEM dog bowl. Sounds like an old 305 Chevy small block with a flat camshaft lobe.

Too early to say just yet... The weather down here has been nasty a wee while, and I've done nothing but putter around town, no long trips. MPG around town is better than it used to be though, and the intake hammering has gone. Performance does seem to have taken a slight hit, but I won't really know until I can do some longer distance riding. It's hard to convince my passenger to come for a long ride when the weather starts turning colder too.

That is also how I would describe the increased noise with a BAK.
I never found it to be annoying.

Way louder with my Baron BAK on my 900. Made it more important to wear earplugs on a long trip, but around town, I thought it sounded cool.

I still have the left cover on, so I guess that makes a big difference. Good to know. I'll have to take that into account when I decide what to do with that left side.

Attached is Ivan's Dyno of the effects of his flash on the 1700 with stock air and pipes. I've circled in orange the part that is important to me. That is an impressive increase in torque (around 10%), without changing air or pipes. The area I've circled is about 1500 toi 3500 RPMs. According to gearing commander (my nomad has no tach), 2545 RPMs is 70 mph in 6th and 58.3 mph in 5th. Look at the torque gains at those speeds in those gears, with stock air and pipes! I can see why people who have done the flash are smiling. I think that's the direction I'm going---Ivan's flash, stock air, and stock pipes.
Happy and safe riding,
Dan

Today on the way to work I was on the turnpike running about 80 in 6th in the left. Up ahead of me were two construction vehicles in the right lane. They fired up their lights and were going to pull over, the pickup behind them came left...no problem plenty of room and I just rolled off and dropped to about 60.
So now I am doing 60 in 6th. When my lane cleared I just rolled on hard and it took off. No lugging, plenty of power. It wasn't a rocket, but it pulled very strong. Before the flash I would have had to downshift for sure to do that.

With the stock air box and oem air filter, I would say the performance reduction is minimal. Remember Ivan's flash was done on a stock setup. Sometimes I think noise is a misconception of power. If it ever warms up enough to test the reduction in rider felt heat-I may even go back to stock/unaltered pipes:tup:

With open air, exhaust, and Ivan tune your 1700 will run cooler, more efficiently, and with significantly more power. They come far too restricted from the factory and need to breathe and the 6th gear passing power suddenly becomes something you fully appreciate when you open things up. This is why companies make great aftermarket parts for these bikes...to make them run better.

Ok. So where is my ecu, how do I remove it, and where do I send it for Ivan to flash? & how much?

ECU is located under the seat.
Remove the battery cover
On the Kickstand Side next to the Battery are 5 electrical connectors
Remove all 5 connectors and pull out the assembly they were attached to - It should slip right out.
The ECU is the box with the 2 connectors
The 3 connector unit is a Relay pack
I removed the metal hanger from the rubber holder which allowed me to slip the packs in easier. -
$350
Hope that helps

My limit is 30, ahh youth... :D
Sent both of mine out on Monday's, had them back on Thursday/Friday depending on the return shipping. When Ivan gets the ECU, he flashes it the same day, then calls you to tell you it is done. At that time, he asks you about return shipping options and gives you the costs. Once decided on return shipping, he rings up the whole sale. $350 for the re-flash + $ for the return shipping you have agreed upon.
As painless as he can make it. Plus a great guy yo talk with. Knows his sch!te!
Ride safe,
Smokier

I would just add you don't send money with the ECU, he calls you when it is done and gets a credit card from you. And send this form with it.

I'm 58, riding since I was 13. Wear leather & gauntlets all winter in Va. Nicer than 99 degree summer.
