I have measured the impedence of the stock Kawasaki speakers in my Vaquero and they are near enough to 3.5 Ohms. So the nominal impedence required if you are looking for a speaker upgrade is 4 Ohm. I understand quite a few of you have used Polk Audio Db512 and some have had success with Infinity(model unknown). Anyway just for those that wanted to know such things. After I have upgraded(very soon) I will add further to this thread.

You are no longer limited to 5 1/4" speakers! I grew tired of them so I designed an adapter. BrucerZX14 posted pics of his speakers in this thread:
6-1/2" speaker adapters for Voyager and Vaquero (http://vulcanbagger.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42753)

They look good. I'm waiting for mine to arrive. It's the only option out there for us.

If the impedance is close, why are some people saying that their stock amp overheats simply by switching to a different speaker? I would like a better quality speaker but I don't want to be changing a bunch of other stuff out to get it.

If you are using 2 ohm speakers and the stock amp is 4 ohms it o erworks the amp. Thus causing it to over heat as the amp does not have enough power to drive the speakers. It can also cause what is called clipping the amp. That will shut the amp down for a moment until it resets. In essence what is happening is the speakers are sucking out all the power of the amp. 2 ohm speakers need twice the power than 4 ohm speakers. IE: A 100 watt amp driving 2 ohm speakers is only able to put out 50watts because the speakers are not efficient.

So as long as I get speakers with the same impedance as the stock speakers, I should not have any problems with my stock amp? I guess the hard part is finding marine speakers of high enough quality that are a perfect match.

Yes as long as they are the same impedance you won't have any problems. Now remember if you get to good a speaker you will hear how good or bad the stock amp sounds. Just something to think about when shopping.

Understood! But I'm not looking to do much more than a mild improvement to the sound and speakers, in my previous car experiences, have been the biggest bang/buck item and you get a longer lasting product as well...at least that's the plan! :)

They are partially correct about impedance (ohms). Your speakers should be the same or higher than what the amp can handle and don't have to be the same. Some amps will go down to 2 or even 1/2 ohm btw. If you are running rear speakers just wire the front and back together in series to increase the impedance to what the amp can handle. (2) ohm speakers wired in series will produce a 4 ohm load on the amp. You will blow the amp running it at 2 though.

Greetings,
Just for clarification if wanted... Speakers in Series vs Parallel wiring..

Well I bit the bullet. Yesterday I went out and bought a pair of kicker 6.5 marine speakers. So far they a rs a vast improvement over stock with my fosgate amp. I still have to remove the fairing so I can adjust the amp to the speaker. Here's a quick look installed.

Man those look great Captj3. I am ordering my adapters this week coming up. I think I am going with the polks and leaving my amp wired for 45 watts rms instead of bridging for 90 watts rms for each speaker. Might be too much juice.

I got a set of OhioVoyagers adapters. AWESOME. I actually put Kicker 6.75 inch speakers in mine. The installed speakers look fantastic. I have a Rockford Fosgate PBR300X4 300 watt amp running on mine. Awesome sound. Now to replace my rear Polks with a set of 5.25 Kickers.

Be careful of the rear speakers, the kickers will require mods to the housing, I have them in mine and they do not fit right in. Mine are the PS5250

Bruce do you remember what the settings on your amp are? If you wouldn't mind can you share them?
Could someone let me know where/howto order the 6.5 speaker adapters?
Thanks!!!

OhioVoyager is the designer and manufacturer of the adapters, and he has posted in this thread. So I'd suggest you go back and read the whole thread, click on his user name, and send him a PM.

Ok, so dumb question to clarify. I got the adapters and am looking at speakers. I do not plan on getting an amp unless it is absolutely necessary. Looking at the Polks or Kickers. Will these overheat my system? Like Puckman77, just looking for better than stock.

No they shouldn't overheat the system. But they will make you buy a amp sooner when you hear how inadequate the stock unit is.

No. I don't remember where they're set. I just kind of played with them till I was happy with the sound.

Can you elaborate? Maybe show us some pics of what you needed to do to get them to fit. Thx.

Sorry but I didn't install them, waiting for the spring, but the problem is that the back of the speaker has the curved part just slightly larger than the hole, so you would have to sand away a bit of the hole to make the speaker cover fit flush, as it was on the dry fit, it wouldn't fit flush and so there was a gap around the bottom of the speaker cover.
