The 404 are not a bad tire but they don't give you much mileage. We run Dunlop Elite 3's front and rear. Metzler ME880 are very good tires and so is the Avon Venom X.

Delphi forum guys said they suck and to look into the Elite 3's. I will give the Avon's a look as well.
Not sold on the Metzlers just yet. My bike currently has them and somewhere between o and 14000 they were put on. The back one is worn flat and the front is not doing real well. Anyway they did not do real well on mileage either.
Thanks, Bill

Had two sets of D404s after the original Stones. Never able to get more than about 5000 to 6000 miles on the 404s running 40/40 air pressure. Someone told me they got great results from the Michelin Commanders, so that's what I'm running now and very pleased so far.
Got about 8000 miles on them now and they still have great tread. I will probably stick with this brand if they continue to give me good service.
By the way, got them through www.americanmototire.com (http://www.americanmototire.com) and prices weren't that bad.

Hi, does the Michelin Commander front tire howl in the corners like the ME880 and the stock Bridgestone ?

I don't think anything howls like the Bridgestones! Mine were so bad before I got rid of them, that the whole bike would vibrate so bad in turns that I thought my fillings would come lose! I can't speak for 880s as I've never had those tires. The Michelins seem to still be pretty quiet so far.

Hi, Thanks for the response. The Michelin Commanders might be the first tire nobody has had a complaint about yet, lol.

And they are cheaper than the metz's and avon's. ;)

I just puta d 404 on the front last friday. Since the quit making the ELite II. I think I am going the Elite III on the back this time. I usally run the Maxxis touring on the back and get about 8000 miles out of it.

Ole Dawg, are you talking about the 404's or the Michelin Commanders ?

The 404's. The Mich & Pirelli's are pretty good. (hard to find)Actually I've had good experance with all the Bias ply tires except the 404's. Avons are great, but wear quickly also.
I just put on another set of Metzlers, Bias front, Radial rear.
I like their Bias tires but the radial rear just wears out too quick for me. I would like to get an honest 10,000 mi. from my rear tire
and from my experiance, and what I've read it looks like a car tire is going to be my only option. I was going to put on Elite 3's this time but there was a delay in ordering & I need tires for the rally,
so thats why I've got Metz on now. I would really like to hear from someone using the Elite 3's after about 6,000 or 7,000 mi.

I put a 404 on the front when the dealer did didn't have a Bridgestone to put on. So far I have no complaints with that tire. For the money, I know no one whe has said or can say anything bad about the Dunlop 404. I was loking at my rear tire yesterday, and it will not be long before it's time for a new one there. When I replace it, I will most likely replace the Dunlop on the front too. If finances allow, I do believe that I will go the the Metzlers. Been reading lots of opinions and those just seem to get the most praise. Also I was reading that they correct speedometer speed more accurately than do stock tires. Who knows, but gonna try them out anyway.

Sounds like these might be worth a look too.

Hey ridemslow, what kinda milage did you get out of your front 404. I just put one on and am taking off on a 7000 mile trip arround the US. don't want to have to change the tire mid trip due to wear.

I had 404's on the Nomad prior to the Metrzelers..... they howled like crazy... even at 40/40, that I even replaced the wheel bearings thinking that was it.........

ME 880's now... love 'em.

Pirelli is coming out with new cruiser tires..... not the Route 66's.. but a new tire for big cruisers..... gonna try those next.

Found a place called Derby Cycles in Shelbyville,Ky. They have the Michelin commanders listed at $100.99 for the rear and $97.99 for the front. Says right now that the front is out of stock, but when I called the parts guy said they were okay now. They said $30.00 for shipping.
Not a bad price at all and have not heard many if any complaints so Monday I am going to order. I know the guy running the service dept at the local stealership. showed him the web site and he said he would mount them. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Anyway here is the site if anybody wants to check them out.

I have only used the D404 since the original Bridgestones. I normally get 9-11,000 out of the rear and about 18,000 on the front. No complaints from me.
