I have been thinking lately of buying a trunk for my Nomad. Anyone have any suggestions ? I really like the one audiogooroo has. I also saw one made by GIVI that looks pretty good. I'd also like to know about how much they run, and difficulty of installation.

http://www.mutazu.com/ You can check out this site, I have a partner I ride wide who put one on his Road King. It holds alot and you can put two full size helments in it with plenty of room for jackets, gloves and stuff. it looks good going down the road and the price was right. it bolts to your luggage rack. they alos have a spoiler add on with an LED brake light which I like for an extra 35.00 dollars. I'm all about having extra lights to the rear. they have several other models also. see what ya like.

If your going to mount a trunk, you need to get a rack for it. the luggage racks for the Nomads (F&S, and Cobras) are only designed to hold 10 lbs. I would suggest a "Wompus rack", I have one and love it. This weekend I'm leaving on vacation. When I get back, I have a trunk just like audiogooroo's (except it is blue/silver with a couple of dings in it) that I'm going to offer up for sale on here before I try it some where else. But that won't be until week after next.

I had the Mutazu DB series trunk for about 3 years. First year had to replace all the lights because the electronic brain went bad. Just replaced the lights with 12 volt ones as I could not find a new brain and the orginal light are 9 volt. Replaced the hinges. The orginal ones broke. I cut out the old hinges, repaired the holes and I installed a piano hinge. Then last fall the front corners started cracking. Also the DB trunk lid rattled from the first day I had it and nothing I tried would make it stop. I had enough and replace it with a trunk bag from Willie and Max.

Ya gotta e-mail Wompus himself.

He's in the member list.

Here you go: Wompus (http://home.mindspring.com/~mikeniezn/). The Wompus rack is a quality product, and Mike is a good guy to deal with. I just put a Wompus rack and Mutazu DMY (http://www.mutazu.com/products.php?cat_id=1&menu=DMY%20Trunk%20Series&product_id=16&s=prod.php) trunk on my Nomad a few weeks ago.

A wompus rack with a HD tour pak bolted to it are a bulletproof combo, as far as durability goes, in my opinion. Its one of the most solid items on the bike.

TC, the only reason is, I wanted speakers mounted on the tour pack, and I couldn't figure a way to mount them on the Venture trunk, and I could get "pods" for a Harley trunk, So I got the Harley Ultra Classic trunk so I could have my tunes. I love music, all kinds, and now I have stereophonic sound http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif. The only thing wrong with the trunk was where I got a little too close to the key pad (where you punch the gate code in) to get into the parking lot at work :(

Do you have any pic's from the side? Does the Pak blend well with the roundness of the bags? It looks like the pak's corners are kinda sharp.
Thanks

Hi
I went with the an 84' Venture trunk. I didn't like the quality in the Mutazu VIP trunk. I saw one on a "sportster", and thought the plastic or ABS was a little thin for my liking. I also preferred the more rounded look of the Venture trunk. Not that yours doesn't look good CJ, because it does. Just a personal preference.
I used pictures of the Wompus rack and my own design to fab my own, out of mild steel. I used rubber starter hangers for a car to mount between the trunk and the metal base below the trunk.
Then had it all chromed. Probably more time and money involved doing what I did.
Hey !! just something else to think about "bankerfrank". Make it your own.

I have a wompus rack and harley tour pack. Like it was said "bullet proof". Hold tons of gear. I can put my full face helmet, leather jacket, chaps and a couple of sweatshirts in with some room leftover.

I know a couple of people who have ordered the cheaper trunks and were not pleased with them after time. They crack after time. Spend the money now rather than later in my opinion.

I may have a better one on my PC at home, this is one I had posted on photobucket. Personally, I don't care for the extremely rounded trunks like the Givi or even the Mutazu DB trunks. They look fine on an FJ1300 or a BMW, but I like the clean, classic look on my cruiser - just my personal preference.

I started with the Mutazu VIP trunk. It is what it is. Did the job for me until I found my Venture trunk. I mean, it's a hundred bucks...what would you expect? http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
There are alot of options for used trunks out there, you just have to be patient while you search. If you can't wait you can buy new, but it's gonna cost you!
It took me awhile, but I finally found the trunk I wanted and it was from an owner of a 99 grn/grn Nomad, so it was already painted to match. $300. Gotta love it!

Why do trunks have to be so expensive? Seems a plastic box if it's made for a motorcycle they triple the price. I'm just wondering....

My thoughts exactly. I have the Mutazu to use which affords me the luxury to look around for a really nice trunk. I've already made the investment in the Wompus rack, so whatever I get out of the Mutazu is gravy. I don't ride 2-up, so I don't care if it's comfortable or how it holds up as a backrest. I just wanted something to stow my gear in. I may opt for a Supertrunk III or I may look for a used Venture trunk. I'm in no real hurry.

mounted on wompus rack, it more than meets all my
requirements.

Cj, thanks for the pics it does look good on your bike. What is the pak made of. I saw on their web site that they have some trunks on sale for 89.00, but they have four holes on the top for a rack, but the rack is no longer available. So you would have to patch the holes. If it was fiberglass it would be no problem. But, if it is not FG then I don't know how to fill the holes.

Also if you buy a pak what would be the best color to buy if you intend to re-paint it the same color as my bike?

Thanks for the info.
Aaron

The Mutazu trunks are made of ABS plastic, same as the newer HD trunks. You can go to the hardware section at Lowe's where they have the little drawers full of odd-ball hardware and buy black or white nylon plugs to put in the predrilled holes for the rack, or you can pay the extra money and get a trunk that doesn't have holes in it. I think vivid black is the cheapest at $110, so if you're going to repaint it anyway, it doesn't matter what color it is. You're going to sand the paint off and prime it anyway.

Ah, the advantages of having a black bike, other than it being spooky fast, is that I don't have to paint accessories to match. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Just bolt some chrome pike nuts through the holes. That way people wont try to sit on it. ;)

PS: If you want to repaint it you can fill the holes with epoxy putty.

His pricing does seem very reasonable compared to alot of the other vendors ou there. You cant buy a used HD trunk for that price most times.
