I installed the cobra autotuner, I had a lot of misfires after I put Vance Hines slash rounds on my 2012 vaquero, I still have some misfires but not as severe, I did notice though that with the slip on I am getting 39 mpg so I guess that is good from what I have read?

Hi everyone just purchased a new non-current 2012 Vaquero S.E. ....made a few mods and so far have some questions. Also have a nicely customized '02 meanstreak 1500p. Time to get on with the Vaquero now.

I bolted on a Vance & Hines 2-1 pro pipe on the Vaquero, and plugged in the same Cobra FI2000R Pro auto tuner in mine with just a K&N filter for air with stock bowls in place, throttles up pretty good but only 2,000 miles on it, still taking it a little easy on break-in but with the current set up still getting a few back fires on decel...I have a new breather coming from Roaring Toyz I am going to hook up, and will report when it's on and I have ridden it a bit. My machine still feels like it isn't getting enough air in from the stock tunnel set up....too restricting plus I live at around 4,000 ft, above sea level. The air density sensor and the Cobra fuel processor should compensate. Ain't no picnic getting a plug out of these 17's, my Meanstreak has 'em right on the side of the jugs.

..OK roundman...being able to -take it- in Oklahoma.. since 1985, pretty well means you are an "Okie" by now ... However...OKLAHOMA IS OK :>)
Hey ---hlknvlcn60--- welcome to the forum..looks like you also are learning the "ropes"
You need to start your own thread..do a short introduction if you like and ask - tell - lie -- er what ever you enjoy, Its all easy to master with a little "hacking" :>)

Don't worry bout the plugs on ur skoot. They are iridium tipped plugs and will last 30,0000 + miles easily. I have had plugs out with 23,000 + miles on them and they were no where's in need of replacement.
A BAK will help a lot, especially at the higher altitudes where the air is less dense.

Racnray I will report back after I install the BAK from Roaring Toyz...hope it has the crankcase breather nipple and 02 sensor plug in with it...fairly important stuff. I also hope it comes with a good gasket where it mounts on to the throttle body. I plugged that tube up in the left side air box that goes to the pair system and I am still getting backfiring a little. I also checked and double checked my 2-1 V&H system, everything tight as a popcorn fart. When I put the new breather on the right side, what do you guys do with the left side? I noticed if that comes off it reveals an ugly picture of the motor without that stock left side assembly on plus you see the fuel pump exposed and unprotected up under there. I might have it painted gloss black with sparkle like I did the center tanktop console plastic piece and just keep it there as a beauty plug unless you guys have fabbed an alternative. What was that about another hose that goes up into the tank on the left side at 11:00 o'clock? I am going to look into that also after I go for the new intake install. any input will be fully appreciated.

Yes, from my understanding (Racnray previous post)) the Hose on the Right side 11:00 o'clock is the one that needs to marbled/plugged. Its the one that is attached the the back side of the air box, not the gas tank.
I plugged this one on my 13 Voyager and 90% of decel popping is gone.

99xcsp......I hope your 11:00 hose on the right side isn't the one with the half inch hole facing right at you, could be and should be the crankcase hose and it needs to breathe. wouldn't want to see you blow the seals in your crank an leak oil all over the place! When i was in there attaching my Cobra tuner, I didn't see any other hose in that position other than that crank hose.

Trust me ive done it all. Theres no getting ride of 100% of the decel popping. one day it does a little and somedays it does it more. I live in a big bike town. My street is the town shortcut to aviod traffic .So i hear em all the time and most pop heading to the stop sign.

jase64, yes you are correct. mine still pops a little but not all the time. I rode Harley's for years with custom air intakes & exhausts with expensive dyno tuning and all the bikes still popped the same with no harm done! Cheers..

WRONG WRONG WRONG....there are TWO HOSES that connect to the 1700 air box.
The CRANCASE BREATHER HOSE is located on the LEFT SIDE ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE FRONT CYLINDER. It is a short hose with a 90 degree bend in it that is inserted into a hole on the backside of the LEFT AIRBOX. This hose should never be plugged up.
The hose for the fresh air intake for the KLEEN AIR SYSTEM is plugged into the backside of the right airbox at about the 11:00 position. If you don't plug this hose then there is no chance to minimize/eliminate popping on decel.
DON'T get these hoses confused, NEVER plug up the crankcase breather, make sure of what you are dealing with.

Hi, When i get my tornado kit in, what happens to the left side hose? do i leave left side alone and keep the box on? i was just wondering if the left side hose gets enough air without air being sucked in. :???:

I have read about plugging up a hose? I have alot of misfire on downshifting, but someone mentioned some days more then others, I noticed today about 100 degrees and humid it seems to be misfiring more, I have the tuner and put the kn filter I really like the sound of the Vance Hines slip ons but I am at a point to put the stock pipes back on, to keep from going insane!

I have been riding for about a year, I started with an 06 fatboy with pipes and dinoed and about 4 grand in extra chrome, rims, covers etc. I traded it for the vaquero because I wanted music, cruise, and better storage or bags. I got the 2012 vaquero for 13000 it was a left over got it in August 2013, I have put 4500 miles on it since August and that is just cruising around my area, no more then 80 miles distance, plus ride it to work everyday unless it is raining or below 40 degrees. I am able to do most mechanical work on my own, took votech back in the 70s then ran heavy equipment for 8 years for uncle sam until 1985, I was then medically retired after rolling a 20 ton crane and breaking my back. I have had 2 back surgeries, hip replaced, shoulders, knees and pretty much everything else is wack! but I pop a pill and keep going, according to my doctor and my mris I am lucky to be walking. I am like the old Timex commercial the had in the late 60s and 70s where they put a watch under a down hill skier and it kept working the slogan was " takes a licking and keeps on ticking" that is pretty much me! any advise is welcomed on my bike.

I have the same exact experience as you. My bike is stock except for V&H slip ons and a K&N filter. I've plugged the hose on the right side airbox, I've installed the throttle body gasket, and I've made sure there are no leaks in the exhaust. This bike still pops and gurgles like crazy and during these hotter days it's been a lot worse.
I really don't want to spend any more money on fuel management systems or intake systems, or dyno tunes. I just want to enjoy the ride. So today I put the stock pipes back on the bike and went for a ride and I'm a much happier person. My pipes are up for sale in the classified section if anyone is interested.

Throttle mod,,, $2 Cobra FI2000R $168 (using factory settings),,, Chucksters BAK $185, Stock exhaust $0, Bike runs like a banshee... NO decel popping what so ever, excellent roll on power. There is an increase in intake noise, almost sounds like i put louder pipes on the bike..? Fuel mileage seems to be about the same (using miles ridden/gallons used), but running 89 octane its between $.10 - .20 cheaper a gallon. I did cut my own gasket to mount the big air kit.

I am worried I plugged the wrong hose, one hose is on the side with the air filter the other is a bigger longer hose that runs to the top of the engine cover, I plugged the short one on the side with the air filter please help I am riding it like that!

If you plugged the hose that is routed into the cross over tunnel in the stock intake that is THE WRONG HOSE TO PLUG. The hose that needs to be plugged is the one that attaches to right side air box next to the throttle body. When you take the stock cover off the throttle body side you will see a small hole in the upper left corner of the air box. That is the hose that needs to be plugged. I hope this helps.

VERY WRONG!!! The short hose on the left side of the engine IS THE CRANKCASE BREATHER HOSE and should never ever be plugged up.
The large hose that originally connected to the right side airbox is the hose that is to be plugged up.

Thank you I will fix it at lunch I hope I did'nt hurt anything riding it like that, I know which hose now it is the long hose next to the electrical plug in on the right side, facing the front airbox?

Well i plugged and unplugged the hoses at lunch, then went for a quick ride, no change really maybe a little less back fire, I know that after talking to cobra and reading the posts I think it is a big waste of money I was stupid and was told that if you put slip ons you need a tuner, and so now I think if I ever fix the backfire misfire I will take off the tuner and see how it runs without it, because it may not be doing anything but taking up space next to the battery!

Roundman, You already spent the money on the Cobra tuner ,leave it on. It works good when your twisting the throttle, put a K&N filter and install the throttle body gasket, Then run 87 octane , you'll be fine. still pops but once in a while..more like a flutter sound thats actually cool...

I reconnected the airclean hose because it did no seem to help when I plugged it and my gas milage went from 36mpg to 41mpg still pops and misfires but seems to run better with hose connected.

I'm not familiar with the mod's you guys are using..I run Cobra Duals (no cat) on a basically "stock 02 1500fi Nomad"
Being 'Old School" and into engines befor the deceleration timing retard tech...Some exhaust 'chuckleing, and "backing-off" was normal...if there is an issue with extreme loud back-fireing..then we used to try to fix that !
Good luck with your problem...my 02 nomad has a very satisfying "deceleration chuckle"...

Roundman if you go to an aftermarket air cleaner like a Thunder or Roaring Toyz, you will have to plug the hose that went to the right side air box. All that does is plug off the switch air valve coming off the heads....and won't affect mileage or performance and does help eliminate some backfiring. The switch air valve is just the top end of the motor part of the emissions system. With a big air kit you will get better breathing and more power and great mileage. I was running the Cobra powerpro auto tuner in mine and I think it is a complete waste of money. I went with the Cobra FI2000 tri pot adjustable tuner and my bike runs much better, crisper, and more responsive and for less than half the money. It adjusts manually and easily with no need for a computer.
