View Full Version : .....KawaNOW and the VROC......
No doubt, some of you have read the thread started on the VROC list. It appears that there are a few that are rather negative about KawaNOW.
It amazes me why some would be negative about something when they really don't know anything about it and its' purpose. All the groups and listservs out there related to the Kawasaki line of products fill a need and provide information and comradery. While KawaNOW caters to the Nomad line only, the other groups like the VROC serve a much broader base of product, the Vulcan line.
All the groups out there have a purpose....we all fill a need. The VROC is a good organization. I'm a member and have been for years. And, I don't judge the VROC as a group just because there are a few bad apples in the barrel.
Some of our KawaNOW members that frequent the VROC list have defended KawaNOW.....Ells, Cadmannq and audiogooroo and I appreciate that.
If a person comes to KawaNOW, checks it out and finds that it's not their cup of tea, that's fine. Noone is forcing others to be a member. But to diss KawaNOW on another board because they don't know or understand KawaNOW's purpose, is a damn shame.
This is not the first time KawaNOW's been kicked around and probably won't be the last. As far as I'm concerned, other list servs and groups out there are NOT the enemy. We should be striving to work together and provide as much information as possible.

Yea, I read it and it pissed me off. I am a member over there too, but there is no quality info. It seems like mostly dribble. This is a quality forum, with quality info and members. Either they don't ride Nomads, or they don't really ride bikes. I'm not sorry I joined over there, but when I'm looking for answers, Kawanow is where I come.

It is a shame when people don't have any thing better to do than talk about other people or other forums. I am a member of Vorc and was happy when I found KawaNOW and am still happy to be here. I thought it was about riding and not what forum you belong to or what bike you ride. Just my 2 cents worth

My 2 cents, I join VROC when I was looking at the Nomad. Got some good info,,,,,a few things there turned me off.YOU post a intro and you get 2 or 3 Welcomes. Maybe,,,,here pop in to ask a QUESTION and you GET Tons of WELCOMes and a answer. THE REAL TURN off was whe a FEW on VROC(not the VROC GROUP) TRASHED the day light out of a Noob for posting a sig pic,,, (I think he a KawNow member now) The few racked him through the coals,, Guess a few sh*t stirers start alot of crap....some people love to stir up the sh*t. had a few in the Sabre forums as well.Guess some people need to get a life.. I am EXTREAMLY HAPPY to be a MEMBER here....Love the wise ass comments that thrown out in fun, LOVE the info...... HOPEFULLY I will get to MEET some of you one Day,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,THANKS TRIP for a GREAT SITE!!!!! Rich
Trip I hope you dont mind my reply I made on the VROC forum
As someone stated in the VROC post about us "I don't ask people what forum they belong to when I wave as I pass them" Its too bad that some people would misinderstand us. As a staff member I guess I would fall into the category of "Higher-ups" as someone put it. I don't view myself as a higherup....I've only been riding for a few years so I'm basically a newbie. I appreciate the comeraderie of this site, the colorful nature, and I've never seen a question go unanswered no matter how technical. Ride on.

You bring up a good point Wolfman about "higher ups". Just because KawaNOW sports some officers or staff members, doesn't mean we think we're "higher ups". On the contrary, as an officer and staff member of KawaNOW, we are here to help and serve the KawaNOW member. That's the whole reason why the staff was created.
Others can think what they want, but where else can a member get the answer to a question concerning their Nomad, accessories, the value of that Nomad, when and where to travel in the US, what the proper riding etiquette is and anything else they want to know about their Nomads.

Sure I have to put up with the "Higher Ups" http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif But a small price to pay for being here.
Once again, I have said it before, THANK YOU Trip for your foresight in creating the best motorcycle forum on the net.

One thing that we don't have, that some other sites have, is professional Self-richeous indignation posters. I hope they don't ever show up on this board.
Other than all Nomads, all the time, the second best feature is the lack of members who feel the need to jump in with self-richeous indignation at anything that isn't the "right" way.

That's a bit of a broad statement to say that most end up in jail... Some people don't need a lot of rules. Some people like a lot of rules. I tend to like a long leash as it were. As far as the VROC site goes, I don't read it often as it can be too much to keep up with, but they are entitled to their opinion as anyone here is as well. All I can say is discourse can be a positive thing. If you want something a little more palatable, the delphi forum is ok. Above all, you have to remember that motorcyclists can be some of the most individualistic types of people you will meet. It goes with the territory. The end result is take everything with a grain of salt. JMO.
I would also add that the sting in any rebuke is the truth...

I have found that the local chapters of VROC, etc, are better for things like that as everyone knows each other and chances are they will know you too, so they behave a little better. It's easy to be a butt hole when you're pretty much anonymous.

I have not been to VROC for some time even tho I'm a member. Nothing against the site I just prefer KawaNOW more. Easier to find things here. Like the layout. Most folks are tollerable. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif All I can find on VROC is a thread called KawaNOW - Dan Lund. If that is the one that has everyone so steamed we need to lighten up. Trip, you have done a great job on this site and have nothing to apologize for and you have no need to defend your intentions. I checked out VROC when I bought the Nomad as was thrilled to find this site. Some people like VROC, some like KawaNOW, some like Delphi. A few of us move between all of them. This is sort of like when hunters start pointing fingers at other hunters who use different weapons than they do. Bowhunters don't like black powder hunters and center fire rifle hunters don't care for either of the other two. Not universally of course but there are always a few who develop that "tribal" attitude and start pointing fingers at the "others". The sad thing is that when that happens we all loose. Divide and conquer you know. I don't whether to laugh or cry when I see this kind of thing. I just want to ride and be able to share my thoughts and hopes and come running when the bike burps to see if you guys can help. I would suggest a group hug here but either Sue or Nico would come through with their Friday Nite Hug Fest photo so I won't go there. ::) http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif

I joined VROC prior to joining KawaNOW. I go to the VROC bike nights, they are a well-established, large group and have enough members here in the Phoenix area to actually have a bike night. I don't visit the VROC site but maybe 1x-2x a week anymore. It seems to me that 90% of the VROC conversations are personal, non or barely motorcycle related. Many of those members have been on there for years and are more like a bunch of old friends who know other members' kids names, spouses, anniversaries, etc.
I had the gall to try and get a Phoenix VROC chapter organized and received nothing but flack from people for even contemplating it. They like their little world the way it is, and that's fine.
I also belong to the Beartooth Kawasaki Forum and the Delphi Vulcan forum. Each forum has its good points, each has its problems. I'm not going to run down another forum publicly. If I don't like a site, I don't go back.

Unwind,
Go to the page you want to link to, then move up to the address bar of your browser and cut-and-past it into the text of the message where you want the link to appear. Should work.

They might be jealous of our friendships here! :) I like this format so much better!! Probably cuz it's the only forum I've ever been/belong to!

First, I have not seen the thread in question, because though I am a VROC member & have been to the High Sierra rally in '04, '05, & '06, I don't visit their web forum any more. Most of their goings-on are too far from me geographically.
Anyhow, my opinion of the people at HSVROC was (with one very minor incident, not worth repeating here) very positive. I enjoyed it and I will definately go again. I'd be going this year, but for the fact that the KawaNOW rally is the same day, and I've been dying to go ride Zion's for years.
My opinion of the web forum is pretty much as CactusJack notes: it's a tough place to get any notice unless you are one of the old guard, or you are a newbie who makes a false move and get's rat packed for it. Still, I got along there fairly well for an outsider until one incident that made a real impression on me.
Back before they had a real 21st century web forum, I made the mistake of mentioning how antiquated their message board was compared to the other places I frequented. I was curtly told about the horrible technical difficulties they'd faced even getting it from a 1980's BBS to that current state. I was also clearly informed that "This place isn't for everybody" and I could basically love it or leave it.
That was 4 years ago & I've posted there perhaps a dozen times since.
I guess it's tough to stand in the way of progress, because I've noticed since that time that they've finally updated their web forum to something approaching modern standards. I applaud that, and I hope nobody was severely injured in the process.
Anyhow, this is my primary haunt now, because I want to talk about Nomads, with people interested in Nomads. It seems to be working out well so far. ;)

I have never been to the VROC forum, but I did find KawaNow through the Vulcan forum on Delphi. I was not impressed with the Delphi forum because its focus is broad and owning a Nomad I wanted a forum specific to the bike I owned. What I found at KawaNow was a dysfunctional family that I can call my own. I don't care if you are a jock, pimp, a drunk, dyke or even a "ho"; you ride a Nomad and with that we share a kinship. I think it is great when we welcome a new member and you can dot the map with pushpins from all the places we all come from. My own feeling hearing about the bashing on VROC is that some people are jealous of us with our Nomads and secretly lust for a set of hard bags, but are too proud to admit it.
I would suggest a group hug here but either Sue or Nico would come through with their Friday Nite Hug Fest photo so I won't go there. ::) http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif

I went and checked out the thread and what I found interesting was that they didn't like the rules or guidelines. Funny thing is, we don't have any rules about the truly important things, like number of times a question can be asked or what you can put in your sig line. When I found this site, what I really liked was that you didn't have to be an expert about bikes in order to feel comfortable, and that aspect hasn't changed. I think that speaks more about the character of the members than it does any "higher ups".

not once have I seen our staff members act as if they are higher ups, they have these postions because of their knowlege in that area and they give help freely to all that ask no matter how many times they are ask. I belong to the vroc group and have gone on rides with some of the local riders they have all been good people and love to ride motorcycles. it is however as many have said some people just have such a screwed up life that they want others to feel the same way it's too bad, and when it gets like that I just walk a way I don't have that kind of time to waste!! I am gald I found this site, I have not personaly met any of you but would be proud to shake your hand when I do.

I managed to get over there and check out what all the hub-bub was about.... man... People...get a life!! It's about riding and learning..and having fun!!
What cracks me up about a lot of what has been said is about "higher ups". Well...my 2cw... the way KawaNow is, with the people Trip put in places, are to make life easier for TRIP!! Not to mention, for the best of the site, with Trip trying to put people with knowledge in their respective fields.
Yea...Trip was the founder and created KawaNow...but with what, 700+ members now, how the hell could anybody expect 1 person to maintain that??? By splitting Topic Boards the way they're done, Trip can get people to help maintain...not to RULE, but just help where needed!!!
I dunno what all the fuss is about and why people feel the need to stir up sh*t!! I guess some people thrive on it...others need it to feel better about themselves.... I dunno....furthermore.... I don't care! I was one of those "newbies" who's first post was about "oil" and nobody jumped my ass...instead, they answered and said welcome aboard! Although, I'm sure...as I do now, you give a silent chuckle to yourself, but we NEVER make somebody feel bad about asking a question!!! We were ALL "Newbies" once and should never forget that!
I'm a member of KawaNow, VROC, TXVROC, PGR, and a few others... They each have something to offer... Enjoy them or leave them.... your choice, but don't bash each other with negativity...that does NOBODY any good!

And another thing that I've been thinking about is how even comment boards on the net develop a culture, just as real as cultures in real communities.
I belong to a few Internet communities, and they all have a unique culture. Some, like this one, work better for me than others.
I've commented before that the Lexus SC community that I post on doesn't work for me as well as I wished. Any question that has been brought up in the past five years gets a swift, "use the search button" reply from a moderator.
Well, I wasn't there five years ago and I like my conversations in real time. Subsequently, most topics have already been discussed, so for a new guy like me all the new conversations are about mods, or pictures of mods. Everything has already been discussed, and everybody is afraid to do it again.
As others have said, the culture here is friendly. You can keep asking the questions that have been discussed already. Who wants a new guy to be relegated to only reading our old discussions? We have them all over again, but with new people's perspectives thrown in.
The culture here is a friendly one, with some good natured ribbing at times, but none of the the battles over who knows the most, or guardians of all that is proper who are ready to bring the smack down on anyone who didn't "do it right".
Trip, and those who were here before me, set the culture in the right direction for my comfort level. It's a pleasant place to hang out

I went to see all the hubbub as well and almost replied when commonsense crept in and stopped me from even bothering. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

You bring up a good point Wolfman about "higher ups". Just because KawaNOW sports some officers or staff members, doesn't mean we think we're "higher ups".

I did, being bereft of common sense, but the comments were totally ignored. The discussion went completely O.T. and sideways.
I'm not sure that's not worse than having people toss flames. To be ignored I mean.

Yeah, maybe. Or maybe you'd just be pi$$ing up a drainpipe.

Have not been a Kawanow member for long but I have found this
forum to be quite informative and full of individuals with a lot of
bike savvy. Have always been made to feel welcome and I feel
quite at home here. I hope that I can do my part to hold up the
standards of the Kawanow group.
Great job by all, Thanks
