Heh, not uncommon around here. Sucks, but just ride a little slower
and don't use the front brake.

I do hate it when that happens, gravel and belt drive do not mix.

Gonna see it more often, as I hear that some states are actually tearing the blacktop off and going back to gravel for many roads. Not enough traffic to justify the expense. Keep those belt guards in proper working order!

Welcome to the land that time forgot... I think I would make a U turn but then again those houses are probably all my relatives...

Looks like one of our beach areas but there's no beaches out there. I've driven through that stuff a few times and don't have a problem if it's packed down. When I hit the beach sand I just figure that I'm going to gently drop my bike.

And this usually happens when the bike is sparkling clean.

And you don't know how far you will have to go till it turns back to pavement.
I have to go 3/4 mile of it just to leave the house before I hit the blacktop, so I don't mine riding some of it.

Normally would turn around and like others have said, try again!

We have a lot of those roads just south of us in amish country. I just slow it down and hope that no one passes coming the other way.

And as someone else said, it is always when the bike is clean

Yep, I just turned around and found the last paved intersection. If I knew how long it was dirt then I'd probably ride through it, but not knowing makes me hesitant.

There is more stuff moving via truck (especially UPS andFEDEX) than ever in the U.S....you can thank internet shopping for that;)

My thoughts exactly. Reminds me of a couple of northern Michigan excursions over the river and through the woods. I lay'ed down a Ultra Classic at a stop sign though when the gravel turned to about 4 inches of sand. The front wheel dug in and pulled the bars right out of my hands. No stopping that one.

At least it's in slow mo when you hit that kind of sand.

You'd be fine. If Mark Clark can do 23 miles on the Apache Trail with his Nomad, you'd have it in the bag.

I was following my SIL out to her favorite watering hole in swamp city Florida and she turned down this one lane sand road that looked like it was straight from a CCR song. 12 miles, but I kept going. When I pulled in all these people came out saying "you rode that thing out here? No one ever done that" as long as you keep the speed down, keep off the soft spots and don't make any sudden moves, you can ride these things on dirt/sand.

HwyRider

Can't ride it on our beach sand if it's deep enough. As soon as the tire hits the sand it sinks in and you're going down or nowhere.

I hate it too but finally figured out that it only happens after I've washed and waxed the bike so if going on a ride of unfamiliar road I don't wash the bike the night before and all is well. (Squeezed a lot in one sentence-huh?)

For those going to the Orofino rally, don't we have a mile or 2 of gravel road to travel to get to our lunch destination on one of the rides?

I hate taking an 800 lb cruiser down a gravel road but have done it on occasion and generally sweated bullets every foot of the way. And I'm old enough to remember when most roads were gravel and pavement was a luxury around our parts when growing up.

I do think every now and then a second bike like a V-Strom 650 ABS would be nice to have so a guy feels a lot more comfortable exploring those old gravel roads. I'm sure there's always something cool to see along the route.

Jared,

When I lived in Colorado my club would go on what we liked to refer to as random rides. We would just pick a direction and go whenever we came across an intersection like that one we would turn around and look for another path.
We would spend the whole day just meandering. I love doing that.

Had this exact dilemma yesterday! Turned around and went back. Having said that, if I had to get from a to b, I would just proceed with caution.
