View Full Version : Asking for a friend

I have a friend who is a member but isn't much of a computer guy.
He asked me to check on the VBA website if there was anyone who would know if there was some way to disconnect the RPM/rev limiter on his 2010 Voyager. ??? I've "searched" the threads and come up with only one that mentioned the limiter. It was more about the need to go faster etc. rather than actually finding a way around the "limiter".
My friend Brian has rode motorcycles most of his life and knows all too well when to shift gears safely. There are times when he likes [needs?] to push the envelope and doesn't appreciate the limiter shutting him down. I/we/he knows it's a safety precaution to "save the engine" but would like to have this disconnected if possible.
Any reference to the subject of disconnecting the RPM/rev limiter would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance from both Brian/"midge" and myself.

I'd wager that it is programmed into the ECM and there's no way to disconnect or alter it.

It is NEVER a wise choice to disconnect the rev limiter on any skoot. A missed shift while the engine is WAAAY up there will not be healthy.
That being said RAISING the rev limiter is an option and is common on sportbikes, either with the getting more common ECU re-flash or thru the PCV program.
Another thing, the 1700's make peak H.P. BEFORE the rev limiter kicks in and running any engine past that point reduces the rate of acceleration due to the H.P. dropping in this over-rev area. On the 1700's there is usually about a 2-4 H.P. loss from the rpm where peak power is produced to just b4 the rev limiter.
The 1700 has a typically very inaccurate tach that reads about 500 rpm higher than actual engine rpm. Peak power is usually around 5300rpm which will be about 5800-5900 rpm on the tach.
I found in my drag racing days that 10,000 rpm was my shift point on my ole KZ with a full-on race engine. Shifting even 200-300 rpm higher would add about .2-.3 of a second to my e.t. and kill at least 2 mph.
The best acceleration will be achieved when shifting at about 5800-5900 rpm on the tach. Your buddy wants more rpm but the rate of acceleration of his skoot is actually slowing down if he is runnin it higher than what I have mentioned, have him shift at the above mentioned rpm point and he will feel quicker acceleration.
Of course adding some more H.P. always helps in acceleration!! Bottom line is the rev limiter is programmed into the ECU and except for a re-flash (and finding a company to invest their time to hack into the ECU and re-write the code) or utilizing the PCV program there is no way to "disconnect" it, and really no reason to do so.

He will have to see if a Power Commander has that feature available for the Voyager, I'd guess it does not. As mentioned its mostly the sport bikes that have the rev limiter adjustment.
My GMC truck has it and it kicks right at 100mph. Sometimes it would be nice to not have it there as well.

Well if what Racinray says is true, and I believe he knows his shit when it comes to motors, why would anyone want to disable the limiter?
When I was young and bullet proof I used to drag race with my muscle car buddies after work. I was racing one of them and he floated the lifters. A couple days later his car was back at the dealer, seems he sucked a lifter into the piston.
I'm with TC... If he needs the rev limiter on a Voyager disabled, he's probably on the wrong bike. He should trade that thing on a 'busa.

Isn't the rev limiter the shift indicator? :D

Not sure if it works the same on a 2010?
When I got my '06 mapped in 2007 the guy that did the work said that my limiter seemed a bit low to his taste, so he bumped it up by about 10%. It was a noticeable difference.
Mechanic's name was John and worked at Lynnwood H-D back when they also sold and serviced Kawasaki.

Funny I thought the same thing, mister dress up came to mind. Rick you probably remember it, but I think it was a Canadian kids show, so Tim might not.
He used to sing a a jingle, "won't you be mine (friend ), or something like that.:D

I am not sure how fast he needs to ride, but my 13 Vaquero has hit 125 and still had throttle available. It is still bone stock except for the radio box, strobes, and siren.

Are you saying you use it for work? That I just HAVE to see a picture of.

With speedometer error, it's more like 110ish. Even an RT-P only does 130 or so, but it gets there a lot quicker and stops better too.
