How many of you, who went to fill up their shiny new bike for the first time, jammed the gas pump straight down the tank and dinged the bottom?

This is the second bike in a row this has happened to me to. Now every time I open up the gas cap I can see the ding. I curse myself every time.

Seriously, you did it to two bikes :ohno:

On the inside of the tank!
I could care less if I have a dent on the inside of my tank

Haven't done that to either of the bikes I've owned, but it sure is frustrating to drip gas onto the bike when you're taking the nozzle out of the tank. I'm sitting there tapping the nozzle to get the excess gas out before putting it back into the pump... for what seems like minutes. Reminds me of when I was a kid and my dad said, "If you shake it more than once, you're probably playing with it."

I'm confused about what you're hitting?

Probably the filler tube.

Think of it as a reserve. That thimble sized dent in there now repuires that much more fuel to fill that new void.

An extra 20 feet per tank maybe. :D

Yeah I'm confused too. I don't think I could hit the bottom of the tank with the nozzle on my Nomad, unless you mean the baffle in the filler tube.
As for drips, I rotate the nozzle so it is facing straight up before moving it from over the tank opening. Works for me.

Lets not confuse the poor guy with 2 much information all at once, we need to get him 2 stop dinging up his tank first. http://vulcanbagger.com/forums/images/icons/ornwink.gif

Thanks for the love and support guys. :ohno:

Unlike the Nomad, the filler cap on the Voyager is centered and not offset to one side. The center part of the fuel tank is a lot more shallow in order for the tank to fit over the frame of the bike. Not realizing how little room I had to fit the nozzle in all my excitement of a new bike, I nicked the inside bottom of the tank.

No Tim I was trying to console long shot at the same time who seems to have drippy nozzle syndrome.:D

Ok, now we know how you could dig the bottom of the tank, but if there is a good place for a first scratch that's it, that's it. Two days old and I put a Long scratch in the clear coat of one of my saddle bag doors. Luckily it was not right through to the color coat and I was able to buff it out.

The good news is they now have a treatment for that ... well, -I- wouldn't know about it, but I heard that from a friend ... :ohno:

HMMMM...a novel way to improve fuel tank capacity. I'm gonna give that a try!!

I have never bottomed out in the tank, maybe my nozzle is too short?

You we are our own worst critics. The only people who know are you and those who read this. Look at it this way. It's a learning curve, it's on the inside and I can never remember of hearing about a tank inspection for internal scratches. If I was to say, and I'm only saying, if I was to ding the outside of the tank of my tank, nobody is going to know when I,m cruising down the interstate. I'm not even looking at my tank, or any chipped paint spots. I'm just thinking "HOW SWEET IT IS."

Well, you said you dinged the inside of your tank.
In most of our minds, that is not a big deal. Then you said it is the second bike you have done it on, now you gotta expect a little ball bustin on that.

I have never bottomed out in the tank, maybe my nozzle is too short?

Come to California and you wont have that problem, The fuel recovery systems on our fuel nozzles will not let you insert it in that far. To top off the tank you have to pull the recovery system sleeve back so you can see inside to pump the last few ounces of gas. They are a pain in the a$$ >:

I guess you could call them an "anti dent device"

cactusjack

We have them here at some stations. Outside of Maricopa County they don't have those vapor recovery nozzles. They are a pain to use. More like an anti-motorcycle refueling device.

Has anyone purchased a new gas-can lately? UGHHHH......they all have that STOOOOPID sleeve on them that is a push-lock-rotate-spin round piece of Sh*t. They are the WORST to use, and that's how they make the aux gas cans for the ATV now, and its a small adventure trying to get gas out of that can. If your stranded and out of gas, you may have no better luck getting it out of that can! What a PITA!

Are you talking about the stupid locking device on the screw cap part?
I bought a few new cans with those pita things on, first thing I did was take a dremel tool to it and cut it off.

We can still get a normal spout here, but it is the little ratchet thing on the black plastic screw part that drives me nuts, as I said I cut them off.

Well as far as I know, the plain spouts are going away.......so stock up on the old-fashioned cans now, I can not find one around here at all.
