Ride-On Smart Caps

Has anyone tried these? I saw them in the J&P catalog and I was intrigued. I know that they would not replace actually putting a gauge on the tire but it would be nice to be pretty confident of the tire pressure without having to get down on the ground when checking the rear tire.

Will a half-ounce make a difference in the balance of the tire? That is the weight of each one.

Just wondering, because they warn about rubber valve stems not holding-up when using these due to cracking and etc. Apparently their ½ ounce weight rotating around with the wheel causes potential problems for the stems. If it does that, then I wonder also about the wheel balancing. Ummm...:shrug:

Wheel balance is my concern as well. My Voyager has metal valve stems so that is not a problem but 14g is not insignificant in terms of mass imbalance.

Good idea. Batteries are spendy $8 plus s & H. It does not say what type of battery but sounds proprietary.

I've used these fora couple of years. They do indeed work. The only advice I have is to turn the front wheel stem so they don't hit the brake caliper.

I'm sure it might be a good idea for some situations. I still prefer to check and adjust tire pressure manually regulary and at the same time I have a look at the tires themselves.

The manufacturer's instructions state you should still check your tire inflation manually once a month, or if the temperature changes more than 30 degrees F. I can't see much benefit to buying them.

Nope, not at all.

Only problem for me has been when I first got them, I had the stem turned too far outward and it smacked against the brake and broke the cap. The manufacturer sent me a new set for free. They now have a warning on their site not to do what I did.

If you lose the little key they provide, you can still get them off. That was one of my concerns.

The low pressure light is tough to see on the back wheel because of the hard bags but eventually someone will say, you have a blinking light back there...
