View Full Version : ignition relocation

Probably should have done a search but oh well. Anyway, has anybody relocated the ignition on their 1500? Even if it is moved to the right side in the same spot would be great. I got in the habit with my sport bike of always shutting the bike off in gear (had it roll off the side stand twice) and I hate using the kill switch to shut the bike off. Then I have to remember to shut the key off. I figured if I could move it at least to the right side, I could hold the clutch in and shut the bike off. Yes I could shut it off in neutral, and then put it in gear, but it is not always easy to get them into first after it is shut off.
Anybody have an answer to this?

Somebody on the Delphi forums showed me this and also mounting it on the speedo housing like a Harley. Will have to research them both and see which will be easier. I like the idea of it on the side of the bike, but I want to put it on the right side somewhere. That way I can shut it off with my right hand and still have the clutch pulled in.
thanks for your help,
Bill :)

Or just use the kill switch.

9 times out of 10 when I shut mine down I have the side stand down and let off clutch it will shut down in any gear you want it in, if not replace the side stand kill switch.
I have this switch http://www.geocities.com/iceman1820/switch.jpg
Never have had that problem with my bike rolling off side stand, but have forgot to shut ignition switch off a couple times and it will make you remember how much trouble it is to jump off, that being just one of the reasons I went with Judge washers

I have one similar to this, but don't recommend as it killed getting into the side cover where I wanted to put a fuse block. I like the options you guys have listed. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif

Don't want to sound too stupid, but did you ever think of just switching the clutch over to the right side instead? Easy enough to retrain your body. My BSA had the shift on the right and the brake on the left and I'm only moderately messed up in the head

If it's that hard to remember to turn key off, maybe get a elastic lanyard and hook to key and some part of your body that way you can't just walk away from bike unless you unhook from key.
And that reminds you to turn switch off http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Me too... it's probably my favorite mod! I have a bad habit though of hardly ever using the key! :)
The tank-top key mod won't work with the newer electronic speedo Nomads. If you've got a regular speedometer cable going to the right side of the front wheel it will work. Otherwise not.
Look at the photo of Nico with his nomad. See the two black lines going to the front wheel? One is a brake hose & the other is the speedometer cable.
Works on carbed 1500's only..... '99 & '00 only?

I wish I could do that mod on my bike, I really like that one.

Yeah, me too.

That's because, since they removed the speedometer cable, they changed the gas tank to remove the hole where the speedometer cable was. Now there's no hole for switch to fit in, plus the gage/light assembly takes up all the remaining space.
Makes sense. Thank you sir! :)

Seems to me that would solve your whole problem. Pull up to a stop, drop the kick stand, motor quits. Let out clutch , reach down and turn off key.
It should become second nature after a couple times.
If not, I hear ginco baloba restores memory http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
I use the kill switch every time. That proves that it works. Riding a bike without a kickstand switch or a clutch switch is no biggie. I did it for 30 years. Riding without a working kill switch is a big mistake. If the throttles stick wide open you'll be real glad it's there.
I have the one scoot has. See link below

I already bought a Vulcan logo plate for the speedo idiot lights so I didn't want to undo one chrome upgrade with another. Have this side one and I am like Nico. I don't hardly ever lock it. Never forgot to turn it off long enough to run the battery down... but I am sure it will happen someday.
