Anyone else have this issue, I currently have a 2008 1600 nomad wth 50,000km on it. 2 weeks ago while riding I lost my clutch, refused to work, them my speedo went, then I saw smoke coming off my back end. Pulled over towed to shop, there is a oil plug on the left side of the crank, thats internal. When the shop pulled the crank cover off, they found the plug missing and ordered a new one. I had alos heard a loud whine coming from the bike which they ascertained was the rear wheel bearing, almost sounded like a jake on a semi when you let off the throttle. I pick the bike up and ride home, 10 minutes into my ride, I notice smell smoke, and look back and see smoke coming from the same area, pull over, tow to shop and once again this plug has blown. The shop is currently trying to figure out whats causing that much pressure in the engine to blow that plug. They are also repairing the rear bearing. Anyone have this oil plug issue before. And yes the shop has been great to deal with and has already taken care of the bill from the first fix.

Look for a kink in the breather hose.

You have to be building internal pressure. Like Stan said check the vent on the breather hose.

The only things I know of that would cause that are too much oil, or as was said a kinked breather hose. You definitely have to have a heck of a lot of internal pressure that is being kept in the crank somehow.

Shop just phoned me with the bad news, bevel gear is fubar'd. apparently in the words of the mechanic, prematurely failed. This is whats affecting the internal oil plug and causing the whine, also can cause clutch failure apparently. As Im not a mechanic its expensive. The shop has quoted me, with parts and labour a bill for $3200. Real crappy part, they are on back order from Kawi and wont be here until Sept 15-16 give or take. FML!!!!!!:ohno:

Get the bad bearing from the shop and take it to a bearing supply house. Here in NC they cost about $13.00.

What is the exchange rate? $3200 seems extremely expensive, all you need is a gasket and the bearing. Here that is less than $50.00, the rest is labor. It shouldn't take more than 6-8 hours. I've done a few of them and that'a all it should take.

What happens with the clutch is that as the bearing heats up it flashes the fluid in the slave cylinder, giving the impression of no clutch.

I suspected the bevel gear when I started reading this, fix it yourself and save a ton of cash.

That's a shame. We have been seeing more and more of these failures recently. I hope you can get if fixed sooner and less expensively.

id love to fix it myself, but I have the mechanical ability of a rock. So im at the mercy of the shop.

Hey jack, is this a common problem on 2008 Nomads?? Should I be contacting Kawi and going ape on them?

In Canada we have kinecor which often goes under the name wajax, they are a big industrial bearing supply company. Armed with the bearing # you could get a replacement from them. The head office is in Montreal but They probably have a warehouse in Calgary.

No, not '08's specifically...but we have had a few others that have had bevel gear issues recently. I'm sure it has something to do with the age of some of these bikes. The older they get, the greater the chance of something going wrong. I don't think it occurs frequently enough to blame KAW.

Hell someone can send you the bearing from the US if that's what it takes.
