View Full Version : Bike is home! A few questions...

Got the bike home and been to be BMV, it's officially mine! Didn't come with a owner's or service manual so I'm going to be rounding those up shortly online.
When I turn the key on, I get a red light and the oil symbol pops up on the display. When I actually start it, it goes away. This is normal just like a car right? I assume so, otherwise it would stay on after i started it but just wanted to make sure. The oil is a little low but certainly not enough to have a light come on I wouldn't think.
I'm going to do an oil change very soon and on my 900 I used a different weight so wanted to see what others are running. Otherwise, I'm probably going to run Amsoil 10w40 or Mobil 1 synthetic.
I mentioned in another thread that my front tire is needing replaced. Was thinking of either going Dunlop 404 or the Michelin Commander II. The back has a newer Cobra 180.
Really anything else anyone can tell me that is Vaquero specific...
Thanks!

Almost forgot the most important part!
Also, the radio station strength is not good to begin with but when I flip on the "driving lights" that were added on in the fairing the radio signal is pretty much NONE other than the station very close to my house. And it has the PCV, I dont see any dials so now I have to figure out how to download a map that is good for my setup as I get some popping. I do not currently possess the know-how to do so :)

My radio hasn't been that good but sounds like you got other interference there. I just went with iPod.
If you ride 2 up might want to think about seats. Wife was real happy to get mustang seat on there....
Congrats on the bike!

Congrads on the bike looks good my raido recepition was bad with shott antenna. I went to napa and bought a standered replacement antenna and put the standered hight or a car on mine and helped alot. I have a tool bag on the lug rack and the antena only hits it its realy never in the way but works better and I like the looks of the taller antenna myself. Goog luck and ride safe. If your getting popping with a PCV you wil need a new map David Sheek has some good ones or you can have it dyno again.

Why do you think the tire needs to be replaced? How many miles on bike, what is the depth of thread?

Thanks for the info! Is David Sheek on this forum?

Thanks, i figured it was but was curious as to why all the other alerts didn't also come up.

The front tire is pretty darn bald. It's stock with 9700 on it. Not too much left in the center.

Another question, can someone ID my air intake? The description from the seller when I bought it just said "High Performance Venturi air cleaner"
Looks like a K&N filter with a black housing? Anyway, I fee like the bike is running rich and I'm getting some popping. I'm looking for a map for my PCV (006 model) with V&H Slash cuts and this air filter.... or something close to it. My bike didn't come with any type of cord or to plug into my computer and I have never messed with a fuel processor so any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Ok, well I found a map for my setup but was wondering if any Vaquero owners have done the Throttle position calibration? Any advice on the process?

I think you are refering to what I beleive is the RACNRAY mod. Search it or just check a few pages back and you will find it.
Here is a thread on it.

That is also something I am interested in, but this is a calibration done through the Power Commander V

I have had both the Dunlops and the Michelin Comander II, Michelin is far superior, longer mileage, better handling, and the Dunlops grab the grooving on the road way more.

Very nice lookin bike c_law. Is that the Thunder MFG air-kit? I didn't know it also replaced the cover on the left side of the engine.

We should! I have some buddies from another Kawi board in Ohio as well. Honestly I haven't been able to ID the air filter. The guy said its a Venturi? I have no idea. It was on the bike when I bought it. I've asked around online as to what it was but haven't received a response.

The TPS is one of the sensors that provide input to your power commander. You really need a dyno to calibrate the correct settings to adjust fuel at various settings. The air cleaner you have is one of the Venturi designs made by Roland Sands designs (RSD).

So I know that this is the intake I have but without calling them I haven't been able to identify a k&n number for the filter. I would like to replace it and think I have seen a similar filter on other bikes around here. Does anyone know the number to replace this filter?

Why buy a new filter all you need is a restore kit http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=99-5000

K&N just needs cleaning. I have the CommanderII's on my Voyager and they are wearing great and the handling is much improved over the Bridgestones.

Hmm, ok. I'll look into it then. It's a grey color and I was under the impression that it should be a reddish.

The oil you recharge the filter with turns it "reddish".
