Is there a side plug for the Vaquero, with a screen in it? Did I miss something? I did my second oil change last weekend and did not notice any side plug.

If I remember correctly that bolt/screen is behind the alternator cover. Crap design.

All 1700s have 2 oil pumps, 2 side plugs with an oil screen behind both, one on each side of the engine. To access the left one you need to remove the footboard, drain the coolant and remove the coolant pipe. For the right one you need to remove the footboard, motor mounts and the frame down tube.
I've done both once, while doing a coolant change anyway and there was a bit of dirt in each screen.

All in all a crap design. :wtf:

Just changing the oil is no problem. The filter and drain plugs are easily accesssible.
The other plugs with the screens are the ones that are more difficult to get at.
You will probably need a strap type oil filter removal tool to get at the oil filter. Its tucked away with nowhere to get your hand on it.

No. The oil drain plugs (2 of them) are easy to get to, the filter is at the front of the engine with no other parts in the way (like a 900 has) and no hot exhaust parts near (like a 1500/1600 has). The Kaw oil filter wrench fits perfectly.
The oil screens NEVER need to be serviced.

At the second oil change I pulled the screen and cleaned all the gasket/sealer debris out of it. Never saw it again.

It can' t be that much of a crap design. GV550 looks like he may hit 1,000,000 miles on his eventually.

There is nothing in the service requirements about cleaning these screens, sounds like way to much work and the filter should get the majority of anything in the oil.

The dealer won't even touch the screens IF they even know about them.

wompusracks.com for a trunk mounting bracket. Then the quick release mechanism is up to you ?
On my 05 Nomad, I only changed the oil by the screen plug, after my first oil change. Used to get more oil out, bike on side stand. But I agree, I will probably only do by drain plugs on the Vaq.

Wasn't Mike working on a quick detach for the Vaq? You should give him a call. His number is on the site to call with questions.
