I changed my oil---OK, normal right, wrong. I pulled the bottom plug first and then the side screen and then spent 1/2 hour or so on trying to get the filter off, so I figured the bike was really drained. I did this all while in a wheel chock so the bike was standing straight up, no lean. Put it all back together and added 3 quarts, the manual says 3.3 with a new filter, so I thought I'd be short. Well, I had to pull about a 1\3 of a quart out because she was overfilled. Anyone got any ideas about this one. ???
Could this overflow cause any damage?

I did mine by the book and now when I tip the bike to level, the oil goes right up over the window check thing. I have been riding it anyway. Have 350 miles on it since oil change, no problems yet. Knock, knock Knock, thats me knocking on wood http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I always fill mine to the top of the window when the bike is sitting level. If you took the excess out you should be okay now. I don't think I would run it too long if its over full too much.
I think oil capacity of the 1600 is the same as the 1500, but perhaps not.
I always change the filter & I put 3.75 quarts in mine.
But you will not get all the old oil out by just sitting it level AFAICT.
I put it on the sidestand, and jack up the right front corner (under the crash-bar mount) and always get some more old oil out of the screen plug hole.

Well, I drove the bike to work this morning and now it's low. I can't figure out what's going on. I'll have to baby it home to put the oil I took out, back in. This is going to drive me nuts!
When you change the filter, it has to re-fill the filter. That takes a pint. If you only put in 3.3 you were almost a pint low.
Are you sure the manual doesn't say 3.3 liters?

The 1500's hold 3.3 litres, are U.S. quarts slightly larger than a litre? Maybe there was a pocket of trapped air making it appear to be overfilled. I don't think overfilling such a small amount would be harmful in my opinion.

I know it's dumb question, but...Did you start it up after putting in oil to fill up the filter before checking?

I drain mine while it is level, just for ease of reaching.
Once it is drained, I lean it all the way over on the side stand and get slightly more draining.
I fill it, start it and run it for 30 seconds or so, turn it off, wait a little for things to drain back down, and check the level again. I always have to add some at that point.

It still remains, I changed the oil this past weekend, added 3 quarts, drove it for at least 70 miles, checked the site glass this morning before work and it was over the site glass, pulled out about 1/3 quart so the site glass was close to the high level, drove it to work and let it sit for an hour and checked it and now its just below the low line.

Are you sure that you are pulling the bike up to straight up each time? It doesn't take much movement to change it from reading low to high.
Just a thought.

Yes, No , Maybe, the site glass still showed it was over filled.
The 1500's hold 3.3 litres, are U.S. quarts slightly larger than a litre? No, slightly smaller. That's why you can get in 3.75 US quarts and only 3.3 liters.
Straight!!!! yes
OK, you gotta hold it up straight for a minute (or at least 30 seconds) before the oil levels out behind the site glass. If you just tip it up 10 seconds you'll get a false reading.
Now my real question is this: How much oil came out of the engine? If you didn't get 3.5 quarts out including draining the flter (or close to that) there's still some old oil in there.
You could be a little over full without damaging anything, but not too much. More than a half a pint over is trouble.

After oil change i start mine up then wait a couple of minits. This lets all the oil settle and if there is any airation in oil it will read to full also. just a thought.

Did you start the bike after filling the oil and check after a few moments wait?
I don't get all that fussy, I drain the oil on a side stand, and from the screen port only. I have never drained with the real drain plug since the screen trap is lower.
I change my filter every time.
Then I add 3 qt's and fire the bike up for a moment. Then I pull the filler cap again and balance the bike on my knee to fill looking in the window.

I checked the oil level the first couple of changes, it was the same each time. When I do a change now I just add 3.3 litres and check for leaks around the drain and filter, thats it.
