View Full Version : Paint career

04-26-2008, 08:18 AM
I know I have posted some paint stuff on here months ago and I am sure some would say "hey man you gonna make a career out of painting your bike?" but I finally fixed the parts I messed up royaly (runs etc.) and now I am putting everything back on. I am bragging here because I have never painted before and I think this things is turning out great.

Not the greatest photos but these shots clearly show how drasticaly the color shifts as you change the angle... is it blue?... is it green?... Also... I swear I sized these down on PB but they still come across HUGE ! ! !

Nicely done!

It certainly is unusual. It'll be kinda like ridin' a big green/blue lizard.
Except of course that lizards don't growl. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

It looks like an A1 job, beproud , and admire the money you saved over paying a pro to do the same job.

Maybe a change in profession is in order. Great looking paint job you should be proud.

I think it'll look really cool when assembled.

A friend and I once painted an entire Chevy van with "fish scales" sorta like that. We didn't do the top in scales, but that was a lot of freakin' work, and the body was very clean to begin with.

I've done some body work and painting (house painting too) and the prep work is always way more work than you're really thinking you want to do. Unfortunately, once you start there's no turning back.

people have always told me it was the prep and finish that makes a paint job and that is damn sure the truth ! ! ! ! ! A bike shows off this color shifting paint well because it has a lot of angle changes over a short distance... however those same angle changes are a 8ITCH to sand... and there is a TON of sanding ! ! ! !

04-26-2008, 01:12 PM
HehHeh...

I never did a paint job in my life where I bought enough sandpaper before I started.

Fantastic paint job! But how in the world did you get the cross-hatch? Obviously, I'm not a painter.

My friend did the same on his 59 ElCamino with the fishnet. It does work!
Your looks good. Post pics when done.
Darn, I got to get out there and finish sanding the GTO. It needs paint this year.

Good job...looks great. More pics when reassembled. :)
p.s. I know what you mean about the pic size...that's why my last pic is bigger than the others...I keep telling it to resize but made it that size anyway. :-/

Awsome job!
I wish I could get a better paint job, with a thicker clear coat.

I heard plastic is hard to paint.
Did you have any troubles with that?

Didn't notice any difference. I did have BAD runs on the hard bags the first try but IMHO it was how they were sitting on my stands rather than the fact they were plastic. You can sand with 400 on your existing clear and add to it. I will also say that when shooting the clear it was easier to get runs.

A guy here in East Idaho entered a Kawi classic in a bike show a few years ago that was painted with that type of paint, he won Best of Show and Ladies Favorite. That is sharp looking paint. You did a nice job. Congrats.

reminds me of the paint jobs we did back in the 60's and early 70's using lace.

I have never done this before (more of a mechanic) mainly because I could tell it takes patience... I have little of that. Don't know if I have anywhere near enough to do this day after day. The prep part is sooooooo tedious I think I would snap. If ya don't do the prep right your paint sux.

Thanks...

Now ya know the answer to the question: What do ya get if you cross a hillbilly, an air compressor, a can of paint, and a case of Miller High Life?

(technically I am a TN redneck)

LOL!! Either way bud...paint job came out great!!! Hmmmm...BTW...is there a diff between MO & TN???

Ok...I'm ducking behind the desk now!!! LOL!

04-28-2008, 03:25 PM
They call TN folks "hillbilliys"... around here (SW-MO & NW-AR) they call them "baldknobbers"... don't know what that is really but it sounds nasty... rather be a hillbilly

No need to duck... I am here to have some fun. If I have one fault it is probably NEVER being serious... of course that is IF I have one....
