View Full Version : Signature Picture size - IMHO

Ok, it's just my opinion and you get what you pay for, but some of the signature pictures are getting really big. A short 3-4 word reply and a screens worth of pictures gets old even with high-speed.

Don't get me wrong, I love seeing th different bikes and maybe mine is too big as well, but it just seems to be getting kinda in the way...JMHO

Am I off the mark?

What I don't like about sig pics is the guys that put 3 of them the same size as mine next to each other. This causes the page to be so wide I have to scroll left then back then left then back to read the post.
Just out of curiosity Mike, do you think mine are to big or OK.

TC, I have the same problem with some posts. They are so wide that I have to scroll from left to right to read them. I didn't realize it was the sig pic that caused that to happen.

It's called "blowing out the frames" and lots of things can cause it. Whether it "blows out" on you particular PC may depend on your configuration. At home I have a regular 21" monitor and at work a 24" wide screen. Things will sometimes look fine on the 24 and blow out on the 21.

Anybody on a 17" or smaller monitor will probably really be suffering over this. One of the things I constantly did over at Motorcycle-USA was to fix people's "blowouts."

You guys crack me up!

I like seeing them too but you're right, when you have to scroll over to see the end...that's too many or too big.

I PM'd a couple of guys on here and told them my problem and they changd their sig pics so I didn't have to scroll.
The thing is it affects the whole thread not just their post.

I wondered why sometimes I would have to scroll over. I thought it was my monitor setting. Scrolling gets to be a pain sometimes.

Trip addresses this in the Forum FAQs. Basically, most pictures should be no larger than 350x350 pixels. If you use multiple pics in your signature they probably need to be 250x250 pixels or maybe smaller.

Sometimes it's tough getting through all the pics to get to the meat. You know the old saying, "Can't see the forest for the trees". Maybe a max size should be adopted----I'll probably get crap for that one!

If you put 3 pics 320x240 like the ones I have , side by side they will make the screen so wide I have to scroll. Thats why I only have two.
Mikesth has 4 pics but they are only 153x115 so they fit fine.
Ringadingh has 3 pics 200x150 side by side and they fit fine.
I think we should only fill one line across. If someone wants one pic or four thats fine as long as they resize them so they fit on one line.
I thought this was just a problem for me and my dial up internet. Apparently it is not just me. Thats a good thing http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Personally, I vote for one man-one pic.

A sig pic isn't supposed to be a montage IMO. It's supposed to be distinctive so it stands out, and easily recognisable so it identifies the member immediately.

Multi-photo montages all start to blend together after a while. It's just hard to convey too much info on a sig line, so it needs to be sweet and simple. Don't try to tell your life story in photos. ;)

BTW, I thought my sig pic was a little large, and I cut it down a bit.

I like that idea. One pic. I'll have to take one I like and change mine.
As a side note there is a thread called I would be riding today if...
In that thread a gyy named donguer has a 425x15 pic and a 346x260 pic with a 198x100 map between them. That makes my screen to wide so I have to scrool. How about the rest of you?

::) Yea CaddmannQ, just a little bit? ;)

HehHeh...
I like to appear at least somewhat humble.

Yeah, I had to scroll too.

Don, you should shrink that first photo a tad. We've all seen a black Nomad before. ;)

And that is what the other picture/avitar under our name is really for I would think... ;)

To me, these are two different things with two different functions.

The avatar, IMO, is like a symbol that represents your identity. It doesn't need to convey much info (and it's too small to do that anyway) but it needs to be distinct and unique. People will recognise you by it instantly when they see it.

IMO A sig pic should tell something sort of personal about you. I think it needs to have a message. Something you'd like to communicate about yourself. Something that says a thousand words in one frame. They can do that you know. ;)

Don't care for the big pics, especially if someone posts a lot. Too much of a good thing.....
I would appreciate smaller pics with the option to click and expand to any size. There have been a few avatars that I would have liked to inspect closer.

Like mine. It shows my split personality. I don't know if I am coming or going. ;) ;) http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I agree with Caddmann that the sig pics should reflect you in some fashion, that's why I have what I do. The main thing is the pic size, like TC said. When someone has 2 pics and they are ginormous, makes for a difficult time reading the thread, but I don't think we should stifle people's expression of themselves. If they can get 50 teeny weeny pics that reflect themselves and don't take up more room than anyone else, that's fine...just don't expect any of us to be able to see them.

I use a laptop, and never have to scroll left and right for anyones post. I didn't know it was a problem for some.

Do my pics make it so you have to go left and right?

No Dan, your pics are at the maximum. Any bigger on one of them and I would have to scroll.
I wonder why a laptop is different? Maybe the laptop compresses the post to fit the screen.
There is a guy named donguer who has a post in the thread"I would be riding today if" is the printing smaller in his post than mine. You know, harder to read?

When I uploaded mine, I took the size that someone recommended on a thread... I had no idea where to start, so I hope mine are acceptable....

Well then I'm at a loss ??? Don't know that much about computers to begin with. Except I spend to much time on this site.
dlarue , your sig pics are fine.

I thought I had the picture thing figured out for two or three days... then all my sig pics went megasize on me. I tried to fix it then I just gave up and took them off. Since then I have tried to post some paint pics which I would think would be more acceptable to the group since there is something that is the subject of the post however they are still big. I have resized the things on PB and deleted the original. I really don't know what else I can do except keep the pics to a minimum.

IMHO... I like reasonably sized sig pics. Don't care how many as long as they fit across the screen and don't blow the frames. I like to see peoples bikes and humorous stuff as well.

I'm with you on that 2bez, posting bigger pictures to illustrate the subject of the thread is just fine with me. Most threads won't have photos, but when illustrating something, I like the larger pictures.

If that was you with the green paint on the hard bag thread, I would have liked to have seen the pic even larger for that thread.
