View Full Version : Bike riding = workout?

Hello! I'm 50 years old and after riding for like 45 minutes or so I feel like I had a full body cardio/weight training workout. So my question is: can bike riding be substituted for actual exercise?

You will find riding the bike is not as much of a workout if you START the engine ;)

I suppose that there is a difference between a work out, and fatigued.

In the spring, after not riding much in the winter, I get fatigued a lot easier. Later on, I can do longer days without fatiguing so easy.

When I rode dirt bikes, I got a work out. I had a 500cc two stoke that could just about pull your arms when it hooked up. I would ride for hundreds of miles a day out in the desert. It didn't involve just sitting on the seat. You constantly use your legs, and whole body.

Supercross riders were tested in a study that found it to be the most difficult sport from a physical stand point. That said, riding a Nomad for a 1,000 miles is about like riding a dirt bike hard for 5 miles.

Depends on the bike. Cruiser not so much, but I did jump on a dirt bike about a year ago and the next morning I discovered I'm not 20 anymore.

I also am 50 years old. I am wondering why you are getting so tired? I ride for hours, and feel a little stiff from all the sitting, but that's all. The Nomad is a very comfortable ride, but maybe you need to change handlebars, or shock pressure, or something; you should not have to "muscle" the bike around, just guide it.

After my heart attack, the doctor said I need to get more exercise. I told him I would ride my bike for at least an hour everyday. He seemed satisfied by that, but I think he thought I meant an exercise bike. :-)

Hey pablo, take care of that ticker bro. Don't f*ck around with your health. Get on that exercise bike tomorrow. One hour a day. BD says do it!!

I'm not a doctor but my diagnosis would be your feeling the results of adrenaline, tensing up, may even have an increase in your heart rate. So there could be a benefit from the increased heart rate but not from the adrenaline rush that is most likely the cause. To much adrenaline can have negative impacts.

Hope that helps. I accept paypal or cash for continued treatments http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
