Would LOVE to know this as well! Seems like it would be faster and less expensive for a nice look.
if I'm not mistaking I think that was mentioned here once before

What happens when you take a rock to the fender with a vinyl wrap on it? Does the wrap start to peal off?

At the Antlers rally, there was a Spyder (I hope Glenn and his wife don't mind me posting this) that had been wrapped. It looked really good, and you had to look real close to tell it was a wrap job and not custom paint. You can see it in this photo.

Here's a link to the original thread on Ann's Spyder.

For the Spyder we were able to get a kit that was die cut specifically for it. I think it would be a little harder if you were starting with just sheet stock, but it could still be done.
As far as durability goes, this is actually pretty thick stuff. Ann's got about 7000 miles on the wrap and we have seen no issues. No doubt she's had plenty of rocks and bugs hit it.
I didn't wrap the whole bike (yet) but I did just wrap the bezel.

Ray,
Here is the guy that is very popular with a lot of people nationwide.
I know he does some bikes, despite his site not showing too many of them.
I am told he is really great to work with and will make something custom for you if you don't like some of his standard patterns (and he has what seems like a million of them). He die-cuts the pieces to fit the vehicle being wrapped.
His name is Pete.

His email is: pete@powersportswraps.com
Hope it works out for you...

I was curious about this a while back... maybe spring, early summer. I never really looked into it much further though. I've got a co-worker that has a family member that can do it. Said it costs about $12/sq ft to do it. That would be much cheaper than painting, unless you paint it yourself. With the wrap, your design ideas are endless!! You can pretty much design any kind of look you want on a computer, then they will print it out and put it on your bike. I'm still thinking about it.
The great thing is, when you get tired of it, peel it off and your back to your original paint job, then you can come up with a new design/color and redo it. :D

That was going to be my question. Any idea of how, if at all, over time, the wrap would affect the paint?

I would think it wouldn't harm the paint, but after lots of sun exposure, the paint around the edges of the wrap could fade and leave a "ring" if the wrap were removed. My thinking here is that the wrap would protect the paint and prevent fading. In any case, it probably wouldn't be too noticeable.

O. K Ray, here is the deal. As much touring as you do, you should have a full blown touring bike. Get yourself a Kawasaki Voyager and you will be set. Just my opinion.

I'm not really sure about long term, but I would think it would protect it more than anything.

it will protect the paint and very little residue when you take it off they say use a little heat and it will come right off they did up five cars when tina mcbrides new album came out last year had her pic and breast cancer awareness logo on them ran it all over the country and that came right off with very little glue left behind think im going try this if i can get the right look and greg thank you that web site gave me lots of ideas they have bike pics just got to dig for them

It would be worth calling Pete to learn more about what he can or cannot do...
I know he does a lot of the Spyders for people. He is the #1 for them; for what that is worth...

I just got a quote for a custom paint job. $3500 on up. Wrapping sounds so much nicer right about now.

Never had a wrapped bike, but my motorhome is wrapped as well as my work van. By the 3 year mark both were shot. Keep in mind that they both sit outside in the Arizona sun all year round and the grade of material makes a difference. I had my motorhome redone. They were unable to remove the old vinyl without destroying the siding, so they went over it. One year later it's already peeling off.
This week they were removing the wrap from my work van due to a corporate name change and it was coming off in 1 inch pieces because of it's age and how weathered it was. They destroyed the paint trying to get it off with a propane torch.
Personally I wouldn't wrap anything. It might look good when it's new, but it's a bear to do anything with when it's subject to the elements for a few years.
Then again.........my Dodge pickup has been sitting outside for 10 years and it doesn't have any clearcoat left on it either.
