View Full Version : NOT Happy w Reckless Fairing

I'm going to try to be as fair as possible but I'm not at all happy w Recklessmotorcycles.com. I bought the fairing in July for my 08 Nomad but didn't install it for 2 months. That was a mistake because I didn't realize that their return policy or exchange was only for 30 days and YOU would be responsible for shipping. It says so on their FAQ. I ordered the fairing in gel black w the cd player option and 6.5 in polk speakers. Again to be fair the fairing itself seems to be decently made but that's not my issue. The cd player didn't work so I called reckless and they said they only cover it for 30 days but that it's under warranty w Sony for a year. A little annoying but ok I'll call Sony even though I think when someone sells something it should work as advertised and hopefully for more than 30 days. Well to get to the cd player you have to open the fairing. Not brain surgery but I have better uses for my time. Well when I take the cd player out it doesn't look very new and written in large letters w a sharpie on it it says USE FOR SHOW ONLY. So that is obviously not good and seems to me like they sent me one that someone knew didn't work. Sony was helpful but time consuming and Sony NOT Reckless has been of any help whatsoever.....I love my Nomad and mostly everything I know or have bought for it has been from this forum and this is my only negative post or review.

Sounds like my previous computer dealer.
He would take used parts from computers people traded in and put them in the new computers he built to sell.>:

So you really haven't said what is going to happen with the CD player. Are you getting a new one? Repaired? I am surprised that you didn't call Reckless and explain to them what happened. THEY should be the ones to fix the problem, 30 days or not.

Sony sent me instructions to send it to them and they will replace it. When I asked reckless for a contact person or # for Sony they told me the # is on the forms that came w it.

Sounds like your being fair to me. I agree, what's with 30 days. They should want to make the customer happy and have enough confidence in the product to be reasonable about the problem and the time.

I also got a Reckless fairing back in May of this year and i have the sony ipod stereo and its junk. My display keeps going out. Iv'e tried to clean the contacts and it works for a short time and then right back to breaking up display words or completely black out but still plays. Will call sony but even if they give me a new one i dont think it will last. To cheaply made for motorcycle use i think.

Now you know why a stereo designed for a motorcycle, like the one Kawasaki puts in the Voyager or Vaquero is $700.

I bought a cheap(er) stereo for my Reckless fairing and it crapped out on me within a few months. Replaced it with a better JVC unit and it was fine, but only had the bike for about 6 months after that.

I have had no issues with reckless but I don't buy tools at a toy store so-to-speak. Car audio doesn't belong on a bike and I chose not to buy stereo equipment from a fiberglass mfg.

I've had great luck withe my Kenwood boat unit. Keeps the weight/electronics out of the fairing and into the saddlebag as well.

I'm going back to my windshield. I have engine guard chaps, Chuckster's lowers and hand guards for when I travel somewhere cold and I put in 2 cigarette lighter chargers on the handlebars for my gps and mp3 player or phone.

That's too bad. I bet you'd really like the fairing once you got it set up properly.

Is there anything wrong with the fairing itself?

I bought the Reckless fairing without radio and speakers installed a set of marine speakers and a pioneer radio had trouble with it about 18 months later now have a marine radio we will see how it holds up the radios in the fairing take a beating if you do not secure them real tight I put a extra brackett on mine this time hope it takes care of problem

No Jared there's nothing wrong w the fairing itself but it aggravated the crap outta me and I actually prefer the look of my bike w the windshield. I love listening to music while riding and w my 2 mp3 players and a cig charger I'm good no matter how long the ride. I was able to compare the look of my bike w and without the fairing while I was at Antlers and prefer the windshield. I also got the idea from Bill (billmac) to install 2 cig charger ports so now I can have my gps and also charge my mp3

No business can be perfect every time out. It's how they take care of business
after a problem arises. That's when you see what kind of people are working-
running it are.

I am sorry to hear you had a problem I wish I had known I would have called Alex at Reckless for you he has always worked with everyone here at the VBA and has been great to us including giving us a complete fairing for our National Rally at Maggie Valley. I am sure that he didn't know any thing about a used radio being in a new fairing

Hey Jim, I didn't know you knew them or I would've called you before posting this. The reviews on this forum were the reason I bought it. Even after most of the aggravation I hesitated and was still giving them the benefit of the doubt til I got my hands on the cd player and it had USE FOR SHOW ONLY in sharpie on it so I almost launched it across the street. Nobody or business is perfect and like I said before the fairing itself was definitely well made

I guess that's why they no longer offer any stereo except the Infinity marine bluetooth stereo. No cd player to skip and rattle to pieces. Bought mine a month ago. I'll have to see how it holds up. Got the Infinity stereo with Polk Audio 6x9 speakers. I stream the approx. 500 songs I have on my phone or I can stream Pandora or Slacker off the internet. It also has an aux jack and a usb port. So far I'm very happy with it.

Sony has been making junk for years. They had car amps and speakers known for frying and blowing. Sound quality in their speakers was always non-existent too.

I had a store credit and bought a Sony portable radio 10 years ago. Got it home and realized it cost 50 percent more than the competitors product for an LCD screen with no backlight (think cheap calculator) and a fake speaker for "bass".

So far you are the first person I have run across mention they bought recently and got the Infinity stereo. You also mention you got the two 6x9's instead of going for the 4 speaker option - how do you feel the sound output is? I know you say you are happy with it, just curious if you would recommend that setup after having used it for a little while now.

I too like the option of just connecting via BT and being able to stream...

I like it a lot. I have Vance and Hines aftermarket pipes that are quite a bit louder than stock so, at speed ... say 75 mph, you've really got to crank it. Although I like the looks of the 4 speaker setup, everyone I've talked to says you get more bass out of the 6x9's. The stereo saves all of your settings. The bluetooth is always on on my phone so when I turn on the bike, the Infinity stereo immediately links to my phone and begins playing my music in the exact place it left off when I shut the bike down. I can also skip or play the previous song in the playlist by hitting a button on the stereo. I just chuck my phone in my pocket and ride. The only issue I have so far is a bit of harmonic vibration in the fairing itself. To bring the bass up to a pleasing level for me, makes the whole fairing hum. Going to have to see what I can do to alleviate some of that. I'm planning on adding a few gauges and will experiment with it then. It might have to wind up being a sub woofer in a saddlebag. Hate to lose the storage. Overall I'm pretty pleased. I get a lot of compliments.

So, manban, what are you going to do with the fairing? You could sell it on here... like, to me, for example.

So are you still looking for a Reckless fairing? My brother-in-law bought one a few months ago for his 1500 and just informed me last week he has got rid of it but kept the fairing. I'm not sure what the difference is in the inner, I know the brackets are different though...

Oh he's asking I think it was $250 for it pick-up , for a VBA'er I would help out on getting it shipped if they paid for the shipping...

BTW this is already sold...

I appreciate it Goose, but I don't think it'll fit my 1600, will it?

It will
I messed up when I ordered my faring and got a 1500
I had to slot the bottom holes on each side and got all the bolts started then just tightened them up. The fiberglass will give as you tighten the bolts. I have had the fairing off once since then and it bolted right back up

What options (if any) does the fairing have? Did he ever install it on the bike? I would be interested in it as well.

If you have any more details about it, or pictures, that would help (color, stereo, etc.). I wonder how much it would cost to ship something that big?

Another member from here put one off a 1500 on to a 1600 and he did have to do some mod's to the brackets and his mounts where the OEM windshield mounted. If it were me I'd just buy the correct brackets from Reckless??

Reakless charges $50 for shipping I think for the lower 48, don't know if he's making any extra on that or not??

Hey goose, any more info on the fairing? If you could send me some pictures, that would help.

Looks like there was someone else interested as well. We might be able to help your bro-in-law out. :D
