View Full Version : How to remove melted plastic

We've had all kinds of discussions about cheap vs quality rain-suits. We've read many stories about the cheap suit hitting the exhaust and POOF, melted away. To where? I suspect onto the exhaust or exhaust cover. My rain-suit isn't a cheap one and I don't even know for sure it was the culprit, but there is certainly something melted onto my exhaust cover. Goo-Gone doesn't touch it. I'm sure steel wool would do it, but I'm afraid even a 000 wool would still scratch the chrome. So what is the secret to getting plastic or similar off of chrome?

I have been told that Purple Slice and a COPPER penny (before 1987) should be used to scrap the plastic or object that has melted on the pipes. I have done that to my pipes and have successfully removed it.

I've used NEVR-DULL successfully. But it's a whole lot of elbow grease..

Never heard of this before. This is the second thing I learned today (rapping your head to warn of police):D. To be clear we're talking any piece of pure copper will work.

I just had to do this today. Spray Easy Off oven cleaner on COLD pipe, let sit overnight and then just wash it off. Be careful not to get over spray on other parts of the bike. I melted a rainsuit on mine and it came right off. You don't want to scrape chrome with anything.

I use super-fine #0000 steel wool, WD-40 and a little/lot of elbow grease. This is the ONLY thing I have ever found to really work....and work it does. Using #0000 steel wool after spraying on a little oil will not scratch your chrome....not even close. You can buy it at most any Home Depot or such other place....

When my frog togs melted to my exhaust i used turtlewax chrome cleaner. Came off and was nice and shiny with alittle scrubing.

Seriously, the Easy Off method required no elbow grease, works great, and doesn't damage the chrome.

Why would anyone use any other method?
Seems like a no brainer to me http://www.vulcanbagger.com/forums/images/icons/thumbs-up-blue2.gif

I would say yes. That is what the distributor told me and even showed me as my pipes had melted stuff on it.

Easy Off all the way. More time on scrubbing means less time riding :)

I have never had that problem (cross my fingers), has anyone tried to freeze it with ice?

Sometimes you guys on here can be real thick headed :ohno:

Easy-Off oven cleaner, let it set over night and hose it off.

I don't think your going to find anything much easier than that.

I use super-fine #0000 steel wool, WD-40 and a little/lot of elbow grease.

I used the steel wool on a heat shield with dish soap and it was easy to remove melted plastic/rubber with absolutely no scratches.

I know Easy-Off and steel wool work, but I was wondering if anyone had ever tried ice? :hmm:

I went with what was handy-0000 steel wool and WD40. Cleaned right up, looks good as new! Thanks for all the suggestions!
Hey, do we have a forum branch for tricks-n-tips? This should go there!
