Have a HF trailer i cut down 10 inches on width. Looking to find some plans on a cargo box for it..I know, go cheap and get one of those cartop boxes. Well kinda wanna be different. So am looking for plans to build my own box. Any ideas or sites would be appreciated..

Love my Vaquero..see that the 2013s are coming out with a matte black finish...dang i am gonna do that when my paint goes and bike is paid for..then start gloss black powder coating some of the chrome..i. e. crash guards chrome around headlight..bag latches..and see where i will go loolo.

Buying a car top carrier isn't necessarily cheap. Mine cost nearly $200. The big concern with a home-made cargo box is weight. You want to keep it as light as possible. A plastic car top carrier is much lighter than a box made of oak plywood. :D

Try the Motorcycle Trailer Forum on Delphi. You might find some plans there.

(I'd post a photo of my trailer, but I can't get to Photobucket right now)

Honestly, what CJ did is your best bet. It's sturdy, light and as aerodynamic as you're gonna get without buying a prefab trailer. If you want something to show off at a bike show, build your own (out of stainless steel). It'll be heavy and expensive but it'll be unique and flashy. If you want one that actually works to haul extra crap on a trip, follow CJs idea.

This is the one I bought http://www.harborfreight.com/600-lb-capacity-78-inch-tag-along-trailer-66771.html and its on sale right now for 399.00 complete. I bought mine on the 4th of July day with coupon out the door was 317.99 You cant beat it at all..... Sweet little trailer!

I have pulled one like that Joe, it seams to wide for my liking, I want to stay as narrow as my front bars with the pegs on it.

Hammy, I saw this one running thru IL one day, it was for sale but he was real proud of it, 1/4" plastic covered with 1/4" plywood with coner styles for strength. Top was vinyl covered over 1/4 ply. I build things like this all the time at the cabinet shop.

He wants to build his own... hence him saying he didn't want the car type box that CJ posted.

Hammy, what type of material are you going to be building it out of? I would think aluminum would be the lightest. I've seen some home-made jobs made out of the diamond plate that truck tool-boxes are usually made from. Looks like a fun project, though.

I understand, Mo. But if he wants something light and aerodynamic, metal of any kind probably wouldn't be best. Of course, I don't pull a trailer (and don't ever plan to) so my opinions aren't backed up by personal experience.

I wanted to build my own, too. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out a way that wouldn't make it look like a coffin on wheels and I went for lightweight instead.

thanx guys. Given me some thoughts to ponder over. Have a real smart father in law with a whole shop of metal working tools so may ask for his assistance in this also. thanks again folks
