You are a CHEAP BASTARD, aren't you? :lmao:

How'd I do?

I think Estes Park is a great location. Right next to Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park.

I took these pics in Estes Park in 2004. We were driving up a road and these "indigenous wildlife" decided to cross the road right in front of our car.

Well BD, we could have picked some of the other hotels at $150 and up per night. This is one of the lower cost and larger hotels in Estes Park.

Those planning on attending the 2013 Rally in Estes Park and desire road information for the area and the state. I would suggest going to the Butler Map website and get a Colorado map. If you need info on getting to Estes, quickest, most scenic, etc. ask and I'll reply. One of the least important reasons for the motel selection is there a Liquior store in crawling distance.

I'm thinking we need to make this happen! We could travel together or find several in our "neck of the woods" and have a whole group go up at the same time.

Anyone in the SC Region or the SE part of the country would be going through Oklahoma more than likely. :yep:

Kris, that's a good strategy, I think.

There are 306 days from today to the first day of the rally. Or 10 months and 2 days as I type this. I'm marking my calendar but I cannot commit to something that is 10 months away from now. It's amazing how many members already booked their hotel room, wow...

CO is beautiful though and the Rockies and some of the roads that lead to CO are awesome :yep:

Glad you guys noticed, especially after BD's remark about the room rate being high. I realize that's just BD blowing gas, but it took a while to arrange everything with the hotel. Staying at a hotel in Estes Park is not a cheap affair compared to other places. Also, I was able to negotiate a welcome dinner on Monday evening that is free to all attendees. At the last National everyone paid for a welcome dinner.

Sometimes, you guys just don't know how good you've got it.

I get it. We had that same problem in Canmore for the Canadian Rockies Rally. The location was/is a big tourist draw and lodging in most places there was VERY expensive. We got a place where rooms were either $100 or $120 a night. So....very well done indeed in finding a great spot and getting us some great group rates. Can't wait to roll in there next summer on my new scoot....

I did that in Custer (alright, BD...I was being cheap) and stayed at another motel. You miss out on a lot of camaraderie that way, and you need to watch the drinking so you don't get in trouble riding back to your motel. If you aren't attending the rally to socialize with other members, then stay wherever. If you want to be at rally central, stay at the base hotel.

I am sure some folks will camp as that is part of what the motorcycle travel is about for them. And at the same time I agree that staying at the base hotel is the best way to go if you want to be rubbing elbows with all the folks. That is a big part of the attraction of coming to a rally.
That said, I may not do that this time. It will be the first time since the SD National that I haven't been at the host hotel and that was because there weren't rooms available when I made my arrangements.
But, I have life long friends that live less than 30 miles from the hotel and it would break their hearts for me to come all that way and not stay with them. So I will but expect me to be there hanging out as much as possible!!! Maybe even grabing a room for a night or setting up a share with some one that wants to save a little$?

Jared, Their mailing address is Lafayette but actually live a bit north on Hwy7. About 5 miles due south of Longmont. We'll have to experiment with a couple of the routes up to Estes. That "Lefthand" Hwy and Route 7 going northwest both look interesting.

Just booked a reservation for a double premium. Apparently 38 rms. have been reserved so far. The person taking the reservation seemed to think there were approx. 90 rms. set aside for us.

When I get closer to heading that way we should start some threads that are rides folks want to do. I will be out there to explore the 2ndary hi-ways. I did the NP last June and now want to see the Colo coutryside. The 12,000 ft areas are amazing but the weather is always a issue that high so hope to explore the 4-8,000 ft areas.

I thought about this years National quite a bit. Probably more than I should and I've come up with the following thoughts:

I believe this will be my last National ride. I will continue to do the southwest regionals as I enjoy my west coast crowd and committing to only every other year is easy. Let me explain why:

at 55 I'm getting more set in my ways (like that miserable SOB TC!) and I don't want some "executive decision" planning my summers ride locations. It's nothing personal but deciding where I'm riding any given year is going to be solely MY decison and not the Staff here. There is so much of this country I want to see from the perch of my new ride and any future new bikes that debating where with a large organization such as VBA is out of the question.

Further. Time constraints makes no sense to me. I thought about riding 2500 miles to Maggie Valley but to meet and relax for 3 WHOLE DAYS and then ride 2500 miles home is just plain stupid. If I was to have riden to Maggie Valley I would want to ride with people that were taking their time and staying at least a week exploring all the town has to offer. This is why I will be arriving in Estes Park Sunday. Marie and I will explore the town and see what makes Estes Park; Estes Park! On the way home we will be taking the longer route with Scott through the Million Dollar highway with Marie and I cutting across the NW corner of New Mexico to add to my state count.

I hope to make this a memorable ride to finally meet some of the people I have't yet.

You are learning, when you get a little older you won't remember what day of the week it is when you are riding. :D The Maggie Valley run was 37 days. Stopped and saw some people going there, went up the Blue Ridge Parkway and hung a left, came back across the Northern US and visited my folks for awhile in the Black Hills, then finally pointed the bike generally Southwest and took a little over a week to get home from there.

Last year I was planning on being gone for a couple of weeks and came home when I woke up to six inches of powder on the bike six weeks later. Really hated to leave up north it was still 100 down here in October.

This year I am debating how far in advance I will leave for Estes Park. Only 840 miles, then again maybe I can find it in 1,000 miles or so depending on how often I forget to turn the right direction :yep: the dilemma is how long I will be out afterwards. My parents are in their 90s so I will go visit them for awhile in the Black Hills. Heck, it is only another 350 miles. Then again, there are some areas I haven't seen in Montana. Of course there is the furnace we call Arizona in the middle of summer so I am not going to be in any real hurry to go back to the heat, either.

From a certain point of view the nationals have been on my way to wherever I might be going.

I agree with several points Brad. The bottom line is I am not retired and I have many things I enjoy that take time (Family, Vacation, Running, Bicycling, etc.) and committing to such a long trip so far in advance is difficult.

I would much rather join in at the last minute rather than back out of a commitment. The smaller & closer regional (sometimes combined) rally's make more sense for me. Hopefully I will have a clear calendar someday and can take off 30 days at a time to enjoy the Nationals at a slower pace.

I have found out some things about myself.

A) I really enjoy the journey's to the rally destinations
B) I don't care for group rides or long rides when I get to the rally
C) I really enjoy the time "around the campfire" at the rally's. Good way to get to know everyone.
D) I don't like riding long miles 6-7 days in a row. Throw in a day off or a low mileage day or two and I am happy.
E) I used to want to put 400-500 miles on in a day but now I am happy with 250-350.
F) I prefer 4 riders or less in my group. Makes hotels, restaurants, and gas stops much simpler.
G) I really enjoy sweepers, riding along water, eating at the hole in the wall places.
H) I am also becoming more like TC!>:(:ohno::D

Boy Brad, your about to make everyone .

Brad, you are right about distance and time when you live on either coast. For me, we live in a region that it's 1400 miles to California (Redwoods Rally) and 1300 miles to Maggie Valley (2011 National). So we are really in the middle of it.

I would love to have the time to enjoy a ride to somewhere and really see the sights and the back roads, but it is the same for me as it is you. There is a nasty four letter word that interferes with fun, WORK. Maybe someday we can enjoy ourselves like the retired people (TC).

Someday Joel . I just know planning for these 1500+ mile NR's has me taking 2 weeks off just to travel back and forth. I seriously debated the 1100 miles to Estes Park this year. If it wasn't for bringing my new bike and meeting the rest of the members I wouldn't have planned it. That and the fact thatTeri Conrad from Kawasaki is riding all the way with me and Marie.

As Budman stated if it's too far don't go. I can't see the National ever being a one day ride for me. Estes Park is the furthest out west so far and it's still over 1100 miles for of us west coast people.

They's some things that are better left to the imagination than to be said. In this case.

I was just scanning the new posts and got to this one and my ears started ringing.
Seems I am getting a bad rep around here. I don't understand it? I try to be kind, polite and helpful in any way I can.
Then some of my so called friends will start bustin my chops for no apparent reason. Now being the calm, cool, levelheaded person I am I fight the urge to retaliate in kind but they just persist with the unnecessary barrage of insults.
I start to get upset but then it dawns on me, the reason they harass me is jealousy :yep: they envy my carefree life style and good looks.
So in the future I will consider their insults and ball bustin as a feeble attempt to bring me down to their level because they know in their hearts they will never be able to rise to mine. :lmao:Carry on.

A Rally is a terrible thing to miss and there's a lot of terrible things you have to do to get to go to one. Sometimes I think my boss considers mine and my coworkers dreams the same as bubble wrap that he sits around popping all day and bust just to be doing it, and sometimes twists it and it goes POP, POP, POP, POP, POP,POP! Don't know yet how it will effect fuel mileage. Jay will be with us, and we plan to take the "old route" from Missouri, on US-50, to Colorado Springs, then up through Denver (places to go, people to see). Counting the days!
