View Full Version : Starting your 1700 while in gear
As far as I can tell (didn't read word for word in the book) there's nothing that says it's possible to start the bike while it is in gear... which I've found kinda annoying. But has anyone noticed that if you hold the clutch and hit the front brake and the starter button at the same time, she'll fire right up?

As long as the sidestand is up and you pull the clutch in, the bike will start in gear-they all do.
Sam:)
Mine won't start like that unless you do it immediately after you turn on the key or flip the kill switch. If it sits for any amount of time at all, I have to hit the brake and the start button at the same time.
My 07 1500 Classic would do as you say though.

That seems like an awful safety problem. More than once my 1600 stalled at speed when I was having issues with it. If I couldn't have just pulled in the clutch and hit the starter while coasting, I probably would have been rear ended.

I agree with Norm. I've had to restart the bike on the fly, too. I think there's something wrong with your bike, Duff.

Been in the same situation as Norm several times. My 1600 always fires up as long as I have the clutch pulled.

My 2009 would start with the kickstand up and the clutch in. I found this out in the early days before the ECU update, when it would stall when cold.

never had a bike that wouldn't start in gear.
