Just got home this afternoon from an IBA run. We left here at 5am yesterday morning and headed south and east on US HWY 30 to I-80 in Wyoming at Little America. Then east to Cheyenne and north along I-25 to I-90 and then West to Livingston, Mt. We got to Livingston at about 11:30 pm in the rain. That was when we realized that we should have planned better. No rooms in town.

At least that was what the gal at the Super 8 told us, no rooms within 50 miles. We were cold, wet and tired and when we started to eye the couch and chair in her lobby she got on the phone. After about 6 calls she found us room in an old hotel downtown. :yep: In its heyday it must have been quite the place. The lady there gave us a break on the room and we were set for the night.

Today we ran down to West Yellowstone and then on to Pocatello.

I have to tell you the Nomad ran flawlessly. It feels good having a great bike to tour on.

Yep, Iron Butt. Now that I've done it officially I don't want to do it again. It makes for a very long day.

Congratulations Bud. I've done a few on the Nomad and it does make for a long day but it sure beats a day in the office.

Congrats Bud.

I'm with you, I did it once, checked it off my bucket list, and don't see and reason to do it again. Those last 200 miles are LOOOONG

Actually it just takes me a couple of days to get back to normal. I think I will limit myself to 700 miles from now on.

I don't know alot about the IBA.
It took you 18 1/2 hours. How far did you go?
If it was 1000 Miles that means you averaged a little over 54 MPH.
That is not something I want to do.

ya, and we took an hour out for lunch in Cheyenne. My odometer says that we went 1048 miles. We pretty much ran the 75mph speed limit the entire way. Smokin'

The Iron Butt thing is completely opposite of why I have a bike. I ride for enjoyment, not to prove anything. I don't push myself. If I want to stop because I'm getting uncomfortable, I stop. A plaque on a wall just doesn't do much for me, either.

With that said, if the IBA deal is something you've always wanted to do, congrats on your accomplishment. I would think it would take a fair amount of discipline to stay in the saddle for 1000 miles straight. (It would take discipline to stay in the seat of my truck for that long.)

Chris, I've done it unofficially several times and wanted the pin just to verify that I can. I can say that will be the last time. I really enjoy riding the Nomad, even for 18 hours straight, so it was not too bad. My Mustang seat is well broken in so I don't get saddle sore anymore.

Congrats on the SS1000. If you're not into distance riding, it takes some dedication to sit in the saddle that long. The IBA has a few different rides (http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/) for those who like distances. I think the Bun Burner 1500 is an easier first ride but most seem to consider it tougher than the SS1000 just because it's longer. Considering the extra time you get, you can ride all day, 8 hrs in a hotel bed, and finish up with plenty of time. For those who prefer not to log long saddle time, there's always the National Parks Tour Master Traveler (http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=11). You get a 'Passport' book from the National Parks Service, get National Park stamps from at least 50 national parks in at least 25 states. And you get a whole year to do it. It's a great reason to get out and ride and see the country.

Good on you man.

I'd be willing to try something like that one day, however I would most likely combine it with a trip to a rally or some place that I will be traveling to regardless. If you can find a spot with a 70mph or higher speed limit it shouldn't be that bad to do.
Ive driven cars and trucks over a 1000 miles a day many times in the past.

Most people do use super slab when they do this type of riding. It is much more difficult to keep average moving MPH high enough on primary roads (non-slab) in order to reach 1000 miles/24 hrs. You can do it on primary roads but you will eat up most of your time. I've done two of mine on a 40/60 split between interstate/primary and it took me about 20-21 hours.

Shreveport, LA to Las Cruces, NM back to Ft Worth, TX is right at 1500 miles. If you timed it so you'd roll through DFW in the middle of the night, you could do that in an easy 18 hours.

Monkeyman, factor in stops for gas and it isn't going to happen in 18 hours unless you are flying with radar detector and can haul a ton of fuel. That is 83.3 MPH without any gas stops, wheels turning time. Every time you have to fill up, you lose MPH for off ramp, stop for gas, potty break, water, on ramp to get back to speed. 1500 in 22-23 hours is what most people that do a BBG (1500 miles in less than 24 hours) will be able to go.

Man u really need an iron butt to ride 1000 miles in a day. Congrats on your accomplishment but don't think I'd try it. I love the ride w no rush or destination in mind. I love riding 2 lane roads everywhere by myself or w my woman pressed up behind me. I'm glad to hear your Nomad took care of you. I absolutely love my 08 Nomad and also love my 98 Vulcan 1500a on those 2 lane roads to anywhere. Stay safe

I want to do the National Park tour some year. Just gotta get the $$ to do it.

You dont realize just how much time a gas stop takes every 150 miles.......pull off highway...fuel up....take leak....get drink....tell each other how much fun youre having....get back on highway......20 minutes easy every 2 hours. Thats why those professional iron butters carry auxiliary fuel tanks (350 miles worth), water jugs with hoseto drink out of, and an extra igloo jug to pee in (through funnel/hose) goin down the road. I'll take the break again next time......whenever that is?

An SS1000 is a challenge but can be completed fairly easily in 19 hours, with some "normal" gas stops. If you want to cut your time, 7-10 minutes from getting off the road to back at speed is what you need to aim for.

During the Cape Fear 1000 Rally, we set our goal at no more than 10 minutes per fuel stop to fill both primary and secondary fuel cells. We didn't have to keep a fuel log (which is something you must do on a IBA certificate ride such as a SS1000), so we were just gas and go on most stops. I can go between 250-300 miles depending on speed of the ride.

Water on the bike is a good deal too. A simple hydration system can be made with a 1 gallon Igloo jug, some tubing and a bite valve from a camel back. We carried some energy bars in our tank bags for food until our rest break time.

I have heard of guys running catheters but don't have any confirmed cases of that being done, but I wouldn't put it past some of the guys I have met.

I did factor in stops for gas. I chose that route because there's not much out there to slow you down (other than DFW), it's a 75mph speed limit most of the way and I think part of that is where they're planning to up the limit to 85. 10mph over the limit (probably the limit to assure you don't get stopped) and you could average 80mph the whole way. If you had a bike with a 6 gallon tank getting 45mpg (not a Nomad but there are plenty out there that would fit), you would get 260 miles to a tank. 5 gas stops at 12 minutes each and you get a 19 hour trip (assuming my math is good).

You dont realize just how much time a gas stop takes every 150 miles.......pull off highway...fuel up....take leak....get drink....tell each other how much fun youre having....get back on highway......20 minutes easy every 2 hours.

I used to drive a truck so I know what it takes for a fuel stop. I guess on a Nomad you'd have to stop every couple hours but there are plenty of bikes out there where you could go 250 miles on a tank and it wouldn't take 20 minutes for a gas up even factoring in ramps and bathroom.

Another thing that plays into it for most people is with more speed, fatigue become more of a factor and your mileage will drop dramatically. At 75+ on my Nomad, my mileage goes away quickly. I can get almost 36 mpg under 73 but above it goes to about 30, decreasing my range about 40-50 miles. The BMW gets good mileage, in the 40's, but without an aux tank, I know I couldn't do more than 280 miles. For IBA certified rides, you must stop every 300 miles. So you are looking at 5 stops minimum. Trust me, they get a little longer as the ride goes to stretch a tad.

The IBA rules state that you MUST stop every 300 miles. No long range fuel tanks or any of that nonsense. They don't want riders to go beyond certain limits that can cause undue fatigue. We stopped about every 150 miles. Without planning our fuel stops it got rather interesting a few times hoping to see civilization over the next rise or around the next corner. There are some looong stretches in Wy and Mt with no sign of a gas pump.

Bud, you can have an aux tank, just have to stop for gas every 300 miles for route verification. Even down here in the SE, I've had some close calls with gas situations. It gets interesting for sure late at night if you are off the super slab. Mike and I were real close on fuel up on I-10 and found a place when he was almost out.
