I sort of like it better without as I don't think it looks right with the new bags (looked great with the Nomad bags) but I'd like some other opinions.
The bags are a little crooked but I haven't quite finished the bottoms yet. That'll straighten them out fine. Also, looks like it's about time for a different fender and wider fillers.

I think it looks better off to me they look to wide and the back second trim is off. Those would have looked better on my Bike but i spent a arm and leg and got a set off Ebay about 3 weeks ago.

I know my opinion usually pisses you off but seeing as you asked I think it looks better without.:D

Are those HD bags on there?
I'd definately put the rails on, and racks on top of the boxes as well.

In my humble opinion, the rails are too wide for the HD bags. I say s*can them.

They're off a 2010 FLHTP. Racks won't fit on top. I'm going to swap out the stock hockey pucks for black pop ups but they'll still be in the way. I had thought about it, though. Chrome rails would look good.

I agree. Fortunately, the rails are still in great shape.

They look too big for the bags, in my opinion. I guess I missed the thread where you decided to go to HD bags instead of keeping the Nomad bags?

If your not going to use the rails sell them and put the money toward other mods.

I think if you're planning to modify the chrome filler pieces and make them wider the rails will be fine. If not,...I think it looks better without the rails. Having said that and I know you didn't ask,...but .....I don't like the bags. HD or whichever ones they are. But that's just MHO.

What was wrong with the Nomad sidebags that they needed to be changed?

Nothing. I just like the HD bags.

How did the look of the different bags change the side profile of the total bike?
Do you have a photo of the two set ups? I would be interested in seeing the difference.
Thanks

Given what my calculator says, you have spent a lot of money on your Nomad... and now it is beginning to morf into a Harley tourer...
Seems before long... you could have just bought a Harley tourer...:hmm:

Go out in the garage or wherever you keep your bike. Look at the side profile of your nomad. His used to look the same. :D

Seems to me if you like the HD bags...get the chrome HD rails that go with those bags. I too like the Nomad bags better on a NOMAD...but the HD bags look good on an HD. JMHO....

Instead of trying to make those rails work I would get a set of harley rails that fit the bags.

Monk, I like it without the bottom rails.

The Harley saddlebag rails mount into the Harley saddlebag guards, not sure how the rear of the guards mount behind the saddlebag. Probably not a simple bolt-on on a Nomad.

That would be the best solution for the rails.

I agree with most others that the bags look better w/o those rails. If the rails fit the bags, they would look good, IMO. I'd check to see if the HD rails for those bags could be mounted w/o too much trouble or you could always cut those rails down & re-chrome but that sounds like a lot of trouble.

As CJ said, the HD rails mount specifically to the HD guards. I'm sure there's some way to make them fit but it's not worth it in my opinion. I took the rails off. The bags look much better without them. The whole back end will look better once I add some bigger filler panels.
glwilson --- You're probably right but I'm not paying interest for these mods and I would be paying an outrageous amount of interest for a Harley. Maybe my credit will be better next summer?

I personally like the look of the HD bags and I really like the fact that they are top loaders. I hate the fact that Nomad bags are side loaders. Thought I would like it then I had a lock fail going down the road and everything fell out. (Ok, the lock did not fail it was operator error!! LOL)
I am thinking of doing the same thing. How difficult was it to get the mounts right?

It should be done and on the bike today. If I remember, I'll PM you pics of the important parts. It took a few hours to do but that was spread out over a week allowing for paint to dry, JB Weld to set and the machine shop to finish the brackets. It'll still need larger filler panels to look right but those are easy.

Bags are done. Needs filler panels.

What are the hockey pucks for on the lids?

They are police bags - that's the knob to open them. Police bags have the latching mechanism in the lid, rather than the square latch opposite the hinged side.

What CJ said. I was going to use regular bags but the shock is right where the front (inside) latch is. The bags are farther out than I like the way it is so I went with the cop bags since they don't have an outside latch. (I got the bags in an extra 3/4" going this way.) I have a set of black pop up latches on the way. I even thought about a set of aftermarket fiberglass bags so I could mold a cut out for the Kaw shock. I could get them in another inch or better that way.

I work at a prison. When I'm on duty, I'm considered law enforcement even though I'm not sworn in nor have I attended any LE academy. Doesn't really mean anything unless I get assaulted. Then it's a crime against an on duty LEO and the penalties are much higher.
