Yes, I delivered a load to St.George a couple of years ago and had some time before my next pickup. So I rented a (cough) Harley and rode thru Zion.Had a great time, the weather and park was beautiful even on the back of a Harley it only had 500 mi when I got it. But I was glad I made it back with no problems. LOL

Wolfman - I just tried to book a room for the rally and one agent at the Casablanca said all of the Kowanow rooms were already booked and a second agent said the whole thing had been canceled. So, I just booked a room without the group number and got one for $39 for June 19 and $49 for June 20. You might want to ask them "what's happening".

I asked about the road around north end of Lake Mead a couple of weeks ago. Wolfman said he was considering it in April when he goes to Laughlin. Cactusjack, besides myself, and maybe others were considering it going to Mesquite in June. Unexpectedly I just finished a nice trip to Vegas on the Nomad no less. Drove part of the road to the northeast of Callville Bay, then back down toward Hoover Dam. Nice smooth blacktop, since it was really nice weather there were a lot of bikes on the road. Speed limit is 50 mph, gentle corners, and dessert scenery. Nice lake views, and plenty of pull outs, at least in the areas that I went. I'll post the details in the trip forum along with a few pictures.

Advice from the visitor center people. Once the warmer weather hits for swimming and boating, traffic shouldn't be too bad during the week. Weekends will see quite a bit more traffic especially after the schools get out. Avoid the road like a plague on holiday weekends. It becomes bumper to bumper traffic because everybody wants to go somewhere. As a reminder a National Park pass, cash, etc., for the entrance fee. Interesting, this time of year it didn't cost me anything, nobody was on the gates. If it looks like heavy rain, I would avoid the route. There are several washes that run across the road. If they are running there will be no way to cross them.

It is a challenge to make the turn from Boulder onto the road going toward Laughlin. Northbound traffic is often bumper to bumper with no traffic lights. Between Boulder and the Laughlin junction there is construction in some areas. So the traffic is compressed into the two lanes rather than four. When going south, don't even think about getting off at Searchlight. With the northbound traffic you may never get back on the road. There is a quick mart at the Laughlin Junction that is a nice place to stop.

Depending on how pressed anyone is for time, this appears to be a reasonable alternative to avoid the interstate.

03-02-2008, 11:17 PM
Thanks for the update. I was told by a friend at work that he didn't have to pay to use the road either but the turnoff from that road that goes through Valley of Fire is a toll road.

When I go to Laughlin Next month I'll take it. I'm staying a little outside boulder so when I ride into Laughlin I'll go over the dam and go through kingman and then on the way back I'll go north on 95

Sadly, the worst part of this trip for me is going to be the 70 miles from my house in Chandler to Surprise on a Thursday morning. I think I'll have to leave real early to beat rush hour traffic.

03-13-2008, 10:05 PM
There's a nice little edit function that can really suck at times (it changes dirty words.) So if you write "my a$$" It will automatically change it to "i disagree" Try typing in a few other dirty words and see what it comes up with

03-13-2008, 10:12 PM
For those of you leaving sunday May I suggest leaving REALLY early. I've been through Vegas many times on a Sunday afternoon when all the californians are checking out of their hotel rooms. Vegas to LA is gridlocked and the big thermometer in Baker is reading 100+ and the freeway is not moving and there is desert as far as the eye can see and all you can ask yourself is "why are we not moving?" there isn't even an accident

Hi,
I'm a new guy on this block...and maybe this has been asked before, I don't know. But how did the dates for this rally get set for a Thursday and Friday instead of a Friday Sat, or a Saturday Sunday? Just curious. There might be more people able to attend if it was on different days. Maybe it's to allow for time to get there and back home to go to work.......?? Or do I have my dates all screwed up. Like I said, I'm just curious.
Wish I could make it.

Good question. The dates were set before I got involved, so I can't answer that one. I assume it was so people had the weekend to get back home. Although I'd have liked to see the rally include all day Saturday, but that's just me. Maybe Wolfman can provide a better answer than my speculation.

Thursday AM "Early Bird" ride

Guys, I know some of us are arriving in Mesquite on Wednesday, with the majority of the attendees arriving late Thursday. If there is enough interest, I'd like to put together an early bird ride for Thursday morning. Nothing too grueling, just something to pass the time. I'm not a big-time gambler, so hanging out all day in a casino doesn't thrill me, personally.

There's a lot of things to see within an hour or two of Mesquite. Las Vegas, Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument, the Polygamist compounds in southern Utah, Hoover Dam/Lake Mead, Kanab Ut, the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, and Area 51. Whatever floats your boat, so to speak.

If you are arriving Wednesday, and are interested in a short, sweet Thursday AM ride, let me know and I'll work on putting something together, with the intent on returning to Mesquite mid-day.

CJ, the Valley of Fire State Park might be interesting. Nice easy 60 mile run, take our time for scenery, pictures, etc., and a 60 mile run back. Could be back before the heat of the day starts up. You're right, there are several other things close in, this is just the one that came to mind when I saw it on the map. Never been there, thought it might be interesting.

Wouldn't have to leave too early, which would give some the chance to recover from the night before. :) I did notice during Cyclefest, in Scottsdale, that the HD riders were real careful with their pipes, the morning after. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif Something about listening to the grass grow. ;)

Hoover Dam is always somewhat of a pain with traffic. Did LV once on the bike, not too inclined to repeat it.

Does the highway from Boulder City to Littlefield (I-15) go through the Valley of Fire? I was just tossing out suggestions. Kanab, Utah isn't a bad ride either, lots of John Ford westerns filmed around there. Southern Utah has some spectacular scenery.

Bryce Canyon is 8,000-9,000 feet and gets very chilly at night, even in the summer. Dress accordingly. Be sure to take pictures at Bryce just after sunrise. Bryce faces toward the East, and as the sun rises, the panorama changes quickly. One of the most beautiful places on Earth.

I did the dates for a couple reasons.

Zions National park is the most visited of all the Utah parks and I'm hoping a friday won't be as busy as a saturday.

I figured people would have to get time off work anyway if they wanted to come and they wouldn't feel rushed to get back to work on monday.

I like to go to church on sunday. I'm old-fashioned like that.

No, it's hwy 12 between Boulder and Escalante Utah.

Here is a google earth view of one of my favorite sections, Hogs back. It doesn't have guard rails, and you could toss a rock off either side and probably through it 500 feet down.

The alpine bits are higher altitude with quakies and pine trees, then it drops into typical southern Utah desert.

Even at 70o I won't need the solid one, but what if there's a rain or freak cold snap? I'm gonna be prepaired for all eventualities short of those requiring flotation devices.

Just reading the Zion NP news and they had a section about road conditions. Might cause some minor delays.

Beginning Monday, June 16, 2008 the National Park Service will be resurfacing a portion of the main park highway and the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive in Zion National Park. The project will include a 1.4-mile section of the main park highway from the South Entrance to the junction with the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive as well as the 6-mile Scenic Drive to the Temple of Sinawava. The resurfacing is expected to take about five days to complete, dependent upon weather. One lane travel, with traffic control, will be maintained and motorists may experience delays of up to 15 to 30 minutes. The Zion Canyon shuttle buses will continue to operate during the project.

The road resurfacing involves chip sealing, which is coating the road with a combination of oil and rock chips. The layer of chips must remain on the roads for two to three weeks before the remaining loose chips are swept and removed. During this time, motorists and bicyclists should be aware of the hazards of a layer of loose rock chips. Speed should be reduced to help prevent injuries or windshield damage from flying chips.

In 2005, Zion Canyon’s roads were rebuilt and repaved with black asphalt. Since then, one of the common questions from returning visitors and local residents is, “What happened to the red roads?” This chip seal project will add the red cinders that will return Zion National Park’s signature red roads.

Gee Mark, got any more good news? This is stuff we couldn't predict.

You have to ask why do they wait until it's the peak tourist season to repave the roads? It's not like it's cold in Zion National Park. They could do it during the spring or fall. Oh wait, it's run by the federal government - never mind.

My only hope is that with gasoline at $4.50 and rising, tourist traffic will be very light this year.

(Any guesses what we'll be paying at Mt. Carmel? I'm predicting close to $6 for premium if they even have it.)

06-09-2008, 07:32 PM
BTW, if you've never ridden on fresh chipseal, I can only say that I'm plenty glad my bike already has chips in the paint. Those of you with nice virgin paint jobs might think about where you want to be in the pack while riding.

06-09-2008, 07:38 PM
OK, I looked at the map and we're only going to hit the 1.4 mile part of that. Each way unfortunately, but that's a lot better than 7.4 miles of crap each way.

Not ideal, but better than it looks. The long part of the construction can't be ridden anyway during the summer, only shuttle bus rides.

So if you get through the 1.4 mile section, it's just like it would have been anyway. And you can go through the park all the way to the other end, come back, and do a U-turn and go back a few times, avoiding that section till it's time to leave the park.

Not ideal, but not too bad at all.

This is an interesting site for Gas Prices (http://autos.msn.com/everyday/gasstations.aspx?zip=&src=Netx)
The gas prices site uses zip codes, City Zip Code lookup (http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/citytown.jsp) will save time.
The Mesquite zip code is 89029 and Mt. Carmel is 84755
Mid $4's at the moment, boo, hiss. http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif

This isn't exactly a superhighway, we'll be moving fairly slow. I don't think it will be a problem.

Dan we'll be riding Hwy 12 on Wednesday also. We're leaving Lyman Utah through Capital Reef NP, and out the bottom over to 12 on to Bryce NP for the night. Might be interesting if we could ride some together. Keep this number in your pocket (916) 616-8137. See ya in either Utah or Nevada..... Oh yeah

Haha BD. You're not alone. I have been trying to figure out how I'm going to get everything packed.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to remove the trunk/wompus rack and reinstall the backrest/cobra rack so I can take the T-Bag on the trip. I was going to detail the bike this weekend, and I will already have the saddlebags off, so it's only 5 minutes to swap out the stuff on the back. I really wanted to show off my trunk at the rally, but I think I'm going to need the space and convenience of the T-Bag. Can't use the trunk and the T-Bag together - it's one or the other.

I'm going to wipe down the front of my bike; ie, back of mirrors headlight, radiatior windshield turn signals saddle bag fronts with Pam cooking spray. I've done this with cars and trucks for years as well at motorcycles in the past and the splattered bugs wipe right off!!

Yeah, well be careful not to smack any endangered species of insect going past the Delhi Sands area. The fine is probably more than your bike cost! I think it's like $2000 per creature killed or harmed.

I just had a patient tell me they go to Mesquite every year.... last week of April or first week of May (WHEN THE TEMP IS STILL TOLERABLE!!!!) LOL

Anyway.... the Casa Blanca was opened by Merv Griffin and is gorgeous. The Oasis is way older but still nice and less than half as much.... well we knew that!

Anyways............. she said her husband loves the steak house at Oasis. "Charmaines's"... great big fat juicey BDlicious steaks...

She said the nice part about the Oasis is you can park your bikes right at your front door vs the Casa Blanca where you have to park them a ways away... good to know!!

104?

Hmmm....

Sounds just like home to me. ;)

Hey, it'll cool down once we hit the mountains, and if we can get the hell out of Dodge a bit earlier it will definately be nicer than leaving Mesquite at 9:00 AM.

The ride back down from MT. Carmel will be increasingly hot, and we'll hit Mesquite at the hottest part of the day, which is late afternoon. That's gonna be the hellish part.

We might just want to hang back in the park a while longer than planned (like anything ever goes according to schedule anyway, right?) until the sun starts to set, subsist on canned rations and snacks for a while, and arrive back at Mesquite for a late dinner when things have cooled down a bit.

In my mind it mostly depends on how long the rest of the riders can hold out without beer. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

It will most likely be pretty hot at Zions too. It has been 105 on some of the times that I've been in the park.

There is the long tunnel though that is nice and cool :)

Next year the rally will be in the mountains. The Black Hills of South Dakota.

The idea for the ride was to be back earlier in the afternoon, before the hottest part of the day. Back in Mesquite, people can drink, swim, gamble, or sit in their room and watch Oprah between the time we return and dinner. The hottest time at Zion is midday, when the sun is directly overhead. At other times, the narrow canyon provides a lot of shade. I can ride all day in temps above 100, but I know many of the members aren't used to it. I took that into consideration.

If the consensus is to leave earlier in the morning for Zion, that's no big deal. It's difficult planning a schedule for a group of people you don't really know. If we want to get up early, eat breakfast at 7:00 (when the buffets open) and hit the road, fine with me. We could leave earlier and eat breakfast in St. George Utah, if that's what the group wants to do. Nothing is carved in stone.

It's 111 here right now, and 125 in my garage. I was getting my gear ready for the rally. I think I'll wait until the sun goes down.

06-15-2008, 10:29 PM
Yeah, I looked at the maps again and Zion doesn't get up that high. Around 6500 ft. So it probably will still be quite hot there. I would definately be up for a quick shot of coffee, out the door and breakfast in St. George after a brisk morning ride.

But the I won't drink much the night before a big ride either. I'm allergic to hangovers. I do not, however, want to put anyone else in a dangerous situation where they aren't quite human enough to ride early in the morning.
