WM, at this time, I'm unable to say whether we'll be there or not. I had signed up for another rally for that same weekend before this forum came to be. I really enjoy everyone on this forum, and therefore want to meet you guys, but it's too early to decide what we'll do. I would say we're a maybe at this point. We're trying to incorporate a longer trip with which ever rally we do. We plan on riding into Utah to the Uninta Basin, and then on up to through Idaho, Oregon and into Washington to Olympic Nat'l Park, and back down the left coast, regardless of what rally we may attend. I'll let you know our final decision as we get closer to the date.

Sounds good ron. You're always welcome to crash at my place on your way to the basin if you need to. We're not too far off I-80. Bed - breakfast and shower.

WM - Thanks for the kind offer. Maybe one day we all could ride out to the basin. Only 150 miles east of SLC. There's 500 acres here with a small lake. The boys living there now are building an amphitheater with camping spots. Getting ready for Cederstock... Here's a view. Thank you again....

Hey Redeye, See you live just up the road from here..... Problem is VROC is having a run that same weekend up to Topaz. So I'm not sure which way to roll right now. Regardless of which rally we are able to attend we plan on staying out on the road for a cuppala weeks or more. I'll letcha know when we get closer in time.

Great link Nico! Thanks for posting that. My first trip through Zions was at age 25 on a '44 Knucklehead. I was too fast, and missed too much. Going back many years later, I took more time, and explored a little. I hope those making the rally take the time to see it from this secondary perspective as well.
Thanks again,

There are so many good rides in southern Utah, that it would be a shame to travel all that way and only see Zions (though Zions is my favorite).
I've ridden on almost every road big enough to be on an atlas that's in Utah. If anyone wants to know good rides in Utah, hit me up.

You're so right Dan.... Maybe you could set up a couple of runs for those that want to extend their stay a day or two (or more). If we make this run, we'll head north through Utah and spend a couple of weeks on the road, mostly in Utah.

Ok....Valdez and Dan......since you're both so "close" there's no excuses!! We'll see you both in Mesquite!!!!!!!!!!
I'm bringing the wife and kids so I'll stick to the main plan but for those that want to explore Utah you could head out of zion jump on 89 - 12 - 24 then either hit moab or go up to price and shoot north up indian canyon (191) to Highway 40. West 40 and west 1-80 are nice. More roads than anyone has vacation time.

Hey WM,
What is the headcount for the Western attendees? The Central group has 18 members plus who have signed on. I hope the Western group is at least as loyal and as commited to this wonderful organization as the Central folks are? Everybody knows that the best are in the west -- or at least it's supposed to be?
What do you think?
I think the central folks have WAY more members in their region. so far we have 9 + a few still deciding.
We in the Western Region screen our members and hold them to the highest standards..... we don't accept just anyone!!!
Besides.... who wants to see Blowndodge dance??

I was looking at rooms at the Casablanca in Mesquite for June 19-20, on Expedia and Travelocity. The rates are $39 for Thursday and $49 for Friday on Travelocity, and $39 and $47 through Expedia. That's better than out group rate, isn't it?
You're right. Go ahead and reserve through expedia. I'm going to cancel my reservations and re-reserve through them as well. I'm also going to have a word with the sales staff since they told me I was getting a discount and will most likley cancel the whole group reservation. I wrongfully assumed that dealing with the hotel directly would get us the cheaper rate rather than reserving through a third party.
That kinda sucks but what you might expect from sales staff.......
We'll get even..... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I wasn't trying to stir the pot or anything. I just happened to be looking for some room rates in SLC for after the rally. I just thought I'd check the rates at the Casablanca for the heck of it. The only problem is that we'll probably be scattered throughout the hotel, but I don't know if that wouldn't have been the case anyway.
They said, come on, dudes, lets get it on,
And we proceeded to tear that hotel down.

Wolfman you might want to let them know that this kind of "deal" they gave us will be passed along to all the members so they will know what we are dealing with? Give them a chance to give a good price? Sort of like inform them that if we feel that the accomodations were good and the price was poor that sort of stuff won't be good for their business?

I'm thinking if you deal with a manager, they might just change everyones reservation to the internet price, rather than have to rebook on the Net.

I'm thinking about going to the Western Rally, and I'm thinking about Central. Problem is, I don't make long range plans so well.
Most of the solo trips I make are in the back of my mind stewing, then some Thursday night I start thinking I ought to go on a trip in the morning, then Friday morning I wake up and really decide to go. I call the wife and say, "hey, I'm going to go on a ride for a few day." I pack up and am gone withing the hour.
Tough to plan Rally's when that's your modus operandi.
Sales manager didn't return my call today. to be continued...........

On one of the public listings for the rally I wrote that it was a closed event for members of KawaNOW for the simple reason that I didn't want every tom, dick and harry showing up that nobody new. However, if members of Kawanow have friends that they want to invite I don't think that is a problem - The idea is to have fun and as long as we have friends around we should be successful.
That sounds good WM. I think you're right.

The only downside for me is...living in Colorado...there is no way to get to the boat without crawling on an airplane. And I spend way too much time on airplanes. (or in airports)
Hate it!
The last cruise I went on (5 day 4 night bahamas) the flight to miami cost more than the cruise!

I hear ya man.
In my work I tend to fly at the last minute alot of the time and I can't always get the direct flight to FL. Last time I had to go down I had to connect in Houston on the way down and Minneapolis on the way back. Even with short layovers it still took all day to get there. What a waste of time.

Yeah, when my dad fell ill, I tried to get a flight out of Des Moines, and they wanted $1,028 round trip to LaGuardia, so I drove 5 hours to Chicago and got a round trip flight for $250. Last minute stuff in secondary hubs stinks.

As I'm on my way to work this morning & don't have time to read thru 24 pages on this thread, so......where is this shin-dig taking place. I got the Mesquite Nevada part & June 19-21 works for me too. What is the name of the Hotel? Is there a reservation code I need when making reservations? The ride thru Zion Park sounds outstanding.
Right now, I plan on riding out from Sacramento CA. on I-80, over Donner Summit & down toward Las Vegas. I will do a map-quest route when we get closer to JUNE. I do plan on having the wife drive the pickup towing my flatbed trailer, JUST IN CASE. (the trl is 16' long & can handle 3-4 bikes.) This will be the first long ride I've taken in almost 40 yrs. I just don't know about riding long distance in the Nevada desert in the late June heat.

Redeye,
Been meaning to let you know I've decided to make this rally. There will be two of us (2 bikes) riding two up and you're welcome to join us. We'll be taking 89 through the Sierras to 395 staying the 1st night in Bishop, 2nd in Las Vegas. After the rally we're heading up to Bryce 1 night, Cedar Breaks 1 night, Tonapah NV 1 night, Yosemite 1 night, and back up through the Gold Chain. 7 nights, 8 days. Come along if ya can...... Let me know and I'll make reservations where needed for us.
If you haven't already I would encourage everyone to start reserving rooms. Expedia has already gone up 50 bucks on 2 nights and mesquite has been known to sell out. When I was in the marines I was driving up from Camp Pendleton one summer weekend and I was going to meet my wife in mesquite for the weekend and every hotel was booked and we ended up staying in St. George.

And the Oasis is across the street from the Casablanca. St. George is 40 miles North and Vegas is 80 miles South.
By that time in June I am wanting to get out of the heat so I am planning on going North for the Elko Motorcycle Rally. Does sound like a fun ride if I did not have other plans.

as an option on your return trip, you're welcome to ride with us north. We're doing Bryce and Cedar Breaks in Utah. We'll turn west there, and you can continue north with having a cuppala more good days on ya! See ya in Nevada....

I was going to mention that. Mesquite is a small town. Really no rule that we all have to stay at the same place. I'll be staying at casa blanca. The Oasis is literrally across the street. Eureka and Virgin river are the next exit up.

Wolfman,
I just booked my room at the Casablanca. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the resort that Merv Griffin either built or used to own? I think it was a different name back then. Geez, I remember when Mesquite was 2 gas stations and a cafe.

OK. casablanca looks like a full resort and if I was gambling and playing golf it would be a done deal. We plan on riding a lot and not just hanging out at the casinos so I'm up in the air over which one. not that the extra cost is an issue but both hotel rate the same and one is half the cost of the other makes it hard to pass!

That's a good point. I really hadn't thought about that. Even if I cancelled the Casablanca room and ate the $25 cancellation fee, I'd still be money ahead. That's more money to drink, uh, to buy souvenirs with.
Ugh, check the "traveler comments" on the Oasis. Not very favorable. Virgin River is only marginally better, Casablanca is not perfect, but is the best of the 3.

Go ahead and book at oasis or wherever. The nice thing about casablance is that even if you aren't staying there they still let you into the pool area.
If it was just me I wouldn't mind oasis. Since the wife and kids are comming in the car they want the nicer place.

I was giving that route a look, too. I'll do whatever it takes to avoid riding through Vegas. I don't even like driving I-15 in Vegas in a cage.
It's probably paved 2-lane. Looks like a decent road. I've got a buddy that goes to Mead every year, I'll ask him and see if he knows.

I'm going down to Laughlin in April and thats the exact road I'm planning on taking to avoid the whole vegas metro area. I've heard its a good road from another guy at work who rode down last year. The map also indicates it as scenic.

I was planning on riding Mt carmel Hwy and Zion Canyon. Doing those roads from Mesquite is about 200 miles round trip. Kolob canyon is kind of out of the way and not connected to other roads so we would have to exit the park and come back in on the NW side. We could see how we feel and see what everone wants to do the day of.

Sounds like you're taking I-95 south through Nevada? If so, it's a good highway and not crowded.
The one I was referring to I believe is Hwy 169 (might change #'s?). It comes off of I-15 south of Mesquite runs east of Valley of Fire State Park, goes through Logandale and Overton and drops down into Boulder City. From there I was either going to take 95 or 93.

Thats exactly what i was thinking. I was also thinking people could order what they want be it a tank for the girls or a golf shirt whatever. I'll have to get with nightmare and see if he could accomadate that or not.
Since there aren't a TON of people comming and not everyone may want one it would probably have to be an individual order thing through them.........more to come

Nightmare will be doing our shirts. He wrote me this email:
I can work up a design with the logo and dates and location if you would like and email you a pic of it by Monday. The style of the shirts is no problem, they can choose whichever they want, once you approve the design I will add it to the whole line so they will have multiple choices. Then they could place an order directly of the website.

I really enjoyed your work on C.H.I.P.S. back in the early 80's Nico Estrada.
There is a good map of Zion here: http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/upload/ZIONParkMap_web.pdf
I was thinking we could enter the park at the south enterance (by springdale), ride to the East enterance and turn around, ride back to Canyon Junction, hang a right and ride up Zion Canyon. At the end there is a turn around area and we could ride back to the South entrance and head back to Mesquite.
I've only been to Zion in the spring and it wasn't busy at all. I've read that Zion National Park is the most visited of the National parks so hopefully us riding on Friday it won't be as clogged as a Saturday or Sunday.

Wolfman, here's some suggestions. Enter like you said, go to the east entrance, then back down to the tunnel entrance and park.
Do the small hike to the canyon overlook (toss a rock and watch it fall a 1,000 feet) Go back to the bikes, time it to get first in line when they hold one way traffic (then you can speed up, slow down, listen to the pipes echoing through the tunnel, rather than parade in between motorhomes :) )
Pull off at the big S curve on the way down and take pictures.
You'll have to skip the other part of the canyon, in the summer cars can't go up it because of congestion (you have to ride a shuttle bus).
Ride out of the park and hang a right at Virgin (don't get too excited, it's a town :) ) That road takes you up a great riding road and up into the quakies and pines and ends at a reservoir. Most people have never tried it, and missed a great ride.
Just some thoughts.

That's the stretch between the Zion Lodge and the narrows. It's a dead end road and traffic moves horribly slow. They closed it to private vehicles because all those cars idling in the heat were making the canyon air very unhealthy. Still probably better than the air most of us in the cities breathe, though. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

If you are ever there late fall/early spring, you can still ride up there. They close it for the busy season.
It's still very doable that time of year. I was there once in the first week of Jan. and it was 70 degrees.
Me and CJ were brainstorming and we thought we would get a general vibe from the people attending as far as how far people are comfortable riding in a day...We were thinking we could ride through Bryce Canyon after we ride through Zion. It would be probably around 360 miles for the day. Bryce and Zion both have a motorcycle entrance fee of 12 dollars per person. The Zion pass is good for 7 days so you wouldn't have to pay to re-enter on the way back. Whatchya all think????????

Thank you for the endorsement, Dan. Bryce Canyon is simply amazing! I've been there a couple of times and each time, I see something different. Outside the entrance of the park is "World Famous" Ruby's Inn, a big, rustic lodge with giftshops, food. and authentic old west charm..
However, you do not ride through Bryce. You are on the rim of this enormous bowl, filled with these formations of pink, yellow and orange. The view constantly changes as the shadows change with the movement of the sun.

I don't know about the Bryce option. While I survived the Las Vegas trip last week at 700 miles round trip, that was done over five days. Split up at 300, 150, 250. I was actually not as tired as I have been when doing the same trip in the cage. It will be 400 miles to Mesquite, Bryce would add another 360 back to back. The Zion option at 200 might be enough for me. I'm just not sure what my stamina is on long distance riding. I'll probably have a better idea as I get more saddle time between now and June. I also have to consider Mesquite back to Chandler in what will most likely be 100+ temps.
At the same time I don't want to discourage the other riders if they want the longer option. Both Bryce and Zion are scenic. For my own comfort level, I may only do the Zion part and return to Mesquite quietly waiting for the more adventurous riders.

This is why the question was asked. We didn't want to turn this into an iron butt rally. For folks doing this over 3 days, it can turn into at least a 1200-mile weekend, even more if you're riding more than 400 miles from Mesquite. If folks think that's too much, speak up and we'll adjust. We want everyone who attends to have a good time, we don't want to kill anyone or wear them out. Temps should be in the high 90's during the afternoon, which seems like springtime to me but I realize not everyone is accustomed to the desert heat.
Wolfman and I are exploring some options, maybe the run through Zion and a loop back to Mesquite through Kanab? Kanab is very scenic and the surrounding area was the location for countless westerns, including a number of John Wayne films. Utah is very scenic and spacious and offers a wide range of natural wonders. However it is spread out and we just don't want to push anyone than they comfortably can ride.

Thats what I said in the very beginning of this thread. Round trip to Mesquite is over 350 miles for me and then another 360 in one day after arriving. I'm going up Wednesday so I'm not rushed. Well over 1100 miles in 2 or 3 days sounds like an iron butt ride. Too bad more can't come up on Wednesday like tomk and I so we could take 2 or 3 150 mile days of exploring before going home.

Yeah, I'm wishing now I'd given myself more time and was coming up on Wed. When the rally ends, instead of riding back to Phoenix, I'm riding 300 miles N to Salt Lake to see some friends and family for 3-4 days and then taking 2 days to ride back to Phoenix.

We'll be making it a 2,000 mile trip over 8 days. We'll head to Bryce for an overnight after Mesquite, then on to Cedar Breaks and on into Nevada back to California through Yosemite. Anyone is welcome to join us.

Yeah, except for the ride back into Phoenix after a few days of sub-100 degree temps. Not looking forward to that. Heat and traffic, ugh! I think I'll take the back way down from Flagstaff and avoid I-17 completely. I-17 gets really ugly on the North side of Phoenix due to perpetual construction and heavy traffic.
My son is actually driving up to SLC to meet me and we are going to hang out together, go get father/son tattoos, you know "guy stuff".

I am going to try to make it to the Rally. I am planning a trip on the Nomad to see my Mom first. She is in Ohio 1800 miles away. From there it is 2000 miles back to Mesquite and then 500 miles back to Idaho. I'm thinking it should take me three days to get to Mesquite from Ohio and one day back home to Idaho. I'm looking forward to riding with you guys to see the sights of Southern Utah. Ride safe.

That's great news. I'm surprized Trip didn't get rid of him since he wasn't a Nomad owner :)
This place wouldn't be the same without Nico and Sue :-*
