View Full Version : Oil pressure gauges pegged

My oil pressure gauge is pegged when the bike is running. I have NOT hooked up the sending wire yet. Only +/- for light and power to gauge. When I shut down the bike, it slowly (about 1.5 seconds) returns to zero. I'm pretty sure +/- are correct although I don't really want to remove the outer fairing again if I don't absolutely have to.
Any suggestions? Would this be normal in some way?

Is it a electronic gage or a pressure gage?

If your using an electric gauge, and the sending unit wire is touching ground, it will peg the needle, this is the easiest way of checking if a gauge is working.

It's an electric gauge. I hope the sending unit wire isn't touching anything but I'll see what I can check without removing the outer again. Will it hurt anything to leave it like this for a week (until I can get the oil changed and hook up the sending unit wire)?

Just disconnect the + lead on the gauge until you're ready to check/hook up the sending unit wire.

That's the problem. It's one of the upper gauges meaning I'd have to take the outer back off. I can't reach it from underneath. Very much a pain in the ass.

If your not riding the bike now anyway just take the positive wire of the battery.

I'm riding. I was planning on riding to work all week. Guess I'll pull the outer off once again tomorrow.
The sender is like a rheostat, take that out of the equation and needle will more than likely be pegged either full on or full off. it shouldn't hurt it and if your not running the bike why worry.
Ok just saw your post that you wanted to ride the bike, what is stoping you from hooking up the sender?

Waiting to change the oil to install the sending unit. No sense spilling oil needlessly. With my track record, I figure it'll take me 2 or 3 days to change the oil correctly. I go back to work tomorrow night. Still, if I have a wire touching when it shouldn't be, I'll have to pull the outer to fix that. :(

I wouldn't run it until you disconnect the wires to the gauge, sounds like you have a short.
