Has anyone put an HD style trunk on a 1700 model bike? Since they came out in 2009 I have not seen pictures anywhere where someone has done that. A lot of guys pick up the Kawi (Voyager) trunk and add to the 1700 Nomads, but those trunks are really pretty weak, which is why Kawi won't put a stock luggage rack on it.
I have read on other forums where many who have added the Yamaha luggage rack to the Kawi trunks eventually experience cracking. HD trunks can pack a load, I routinely pack about 20 lbs. in a bag on top of my trunk...no problem! If I were to someday upgrade the bike...I would like something that has a luggage rack and can carry a load.

I can put a huge suitcase on my racks and leave it in the room for the day rides. :D

Quite a few guys have added the Venture luggage rack to the Voyager trunk with no issues that I have heard of. If you are thinking buying a 1700 Nomad why not buy a Wompus rack for it and add whatever trunk you want, Premeux, HD etc.

That is what I am getting at....but I have not seen any pics yet where someone has done that....just wondering if someone here has.

Not that I am aware of. I have seen photos of 1700 Nomads with the Voyager trunk but none with a non Voyager trunk. Why not take the trunk off your 1600 Nomad before you sell it and fit it on a 1700 Nomad ? Have you contacted Wompus to see if he makes a trunk mounting rack for the 1700 Nomad ?

I'm not that far ahead of myself yet....but that is what I am considering if/when the time comes. I'm sure if Wompus doesn't already, he can easily do so. I'm just surprised we have not seen that setup as of yet....been 3-4 years since the 1700 came out and I would have thought someone here might have given it a go.

I think I answered your first post, put a Wompus rack on a 1700 Nomad and whatever trunk you like ? Ask Wompus who he sold the 1700 mounting racks to and if they sent him any photos of the install with a HD or similar trunk ?

I think I answered your first post, Wompus rack on a 1700 Nomad.
You did...I was just wondering if anyone has done it and looking for some pics is all. I have yet to see a 1700 with a HD trunk...and you would think by now we would have.

I think it would look almost exactly like the Nomad with the Voyager trunk in the link I posted ?

Also, from what I hear, it comes with better dealers who are willing to help you in a pinch. Not to mention a catalog of accessories as thick as a phone book.:D

Kris, I did that. Scootworks trunk on a homemade bracket that looked allot like a Wompas. It didn't quite make it to Crescent City though. :ohno: There should be pics somewhere on this site. I never got to paint it either. So if you look for the pics it's a black trunk on a red/beige bike.

It doesn't look right to me either, I think its because they left the passenger grab rail on the bike. That makes the box sit back a little further than it should.

And it's not color matched and to be honest, the boxy lines of a HD tourpack don't work with the curvy lines of a Kawasaki. The late model Venture trunk works better in terms of looks and I suppose the Voyager trunk does too, even if it isn't as sturdy as it should be.

Actually my plan was to keep the grab rails all along. They could have been removed nonetheless. :yep: That's why I made my own bracket. When the backrest was attached to the trunk the dimension from the windshield to the backrest was exactly the same as before. To mount the trunk further forward would result in less rider/passenger room.
Ponch, it was to get a two tone paint job when we returned from Crescent City but that bike didn't come home with us.:ohno:

I think it would have looked much different painted to match the bike. Too bad it never came to pass...
