View Full Version : Ran out of gas
I normally fill up when the fuel light comes on and I usually end up pumping around 3.5 galllons. After doing this time after time I figured I could go a little longer before fueling. Well I ran out of gas today, it started sputtering and I knew what was happening. Luckily, it died at the top of a hill and there was a gas station at the bottom. I started it up a couple of times and got an extra 10 feet out of it each time. After "topping it off" I had pumped exactly 4 gallons. I THOUGHT THESE THINGS HAD 5 GALLON TANKS??!! http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> ??? don't piss off the wolf.
That doesn't sound right......... I have a '99 w a 4.2 gal. tank..... I switch to reserve when it cuts out, and I know I got at least another 30 miles........ with yours.... you should hold 5 gal... and have a gal or at least .8 left after the fuel light comes on.... you do have a fuel light?
I thought Nomads had a 5.3 gal tank from 2005 on?

You need to stand it straight and. fill it above the lower part of the neck and get gas in between the baffle and the top of the tank. You'll get close to another 100 miles out of it.

WOLF, how many miles on the trip meter when it actually ran out and stopped?
To fill mine I stand it straight up and fill to about 1/4" above the filler insert. The low fuel light comes on at 130 to 140 miles. then it usually takes 3 1/2 gallons to fill. i have thought of riding till it ran out to see how much fuel it would really take and to know how far it would run after the light comes on.
Do FI machines fire up with no problem after they aer filled up when compleatly dry?

NEWER NOMADS DO HOLD 5.3 GAL. I HEARD YOUR SUPPOSED TO FILL HER UP ON THE KICK STAND, TANK IS DESIGNED THAT WAY. AND YES 0.8 GAL ON RESERVE ONCE LIGHT COMES ON.

I have thought about posting this same question lately but it is not as severe as Wolfman. Doc is correct that we are supposed to fill these on the sidestand. When I fill mine that way if It goes an inch into the neck tube on the tank the dang thing pees gas out the overflow so I know it is full. My fuel light comes on and goes off like it is just starting to hit the sensor. After riding a while it finally stays on then I hit a gas station. One time it took 5.1 gallons to fill but most of the time it uses just around 4 gallons. I suspect that the indicator is not too accurate. I thought about throwing a fuel can in the saddlebag and running it dry just to see how far I can really go with the light on but also wonder about getting it re-primed so to speak. IDaho

DITTO +1 /\. Eveytime my light comes on I have exactly one gallon left and this is after checking it over and over this way and thats what my ride does. Light comes on around the 150 to 165 depending on how i ride it that day.
Maybe I'm not filling it up all the way. I always fill it while I'm sitting on it and always stop when the fuel is even with the metal bottom of the filller neck. My fuel light usually comes on around 130 miles or so. I ran out of gas the day I bought it too. The dealer didn't even put enough gas in it to get me to the closest gas station. I was sitting on the side of the road cranking it over and over. I didn't even think it would be out of gas because I was unfamiliar with the fuel guage and even though it was on its last bar, I didn't realize they were "bars" it still looked like it still had fuel according to the guage. I called them up to bring me some gas but by the time they got there another motorist had brought me some gas. Fired right up both times.
I guess I'll start filling it up past the filler neck with it on its side stand.

Same for me as majority here.....Low fuel light comes on around 153 and I have drove it up to 178 miles on the trip meter, then stopped for gas and get 4 gallons in with bike on sidestand.

I'm sure that will help buddy ;)

Nomads had a 5.3 US gal tank from 2005.
"The indicator light goes on when approximate 0.9 US gal (THE RESERVE!) of fuel can be used."

That would be the way to go....... expensive though!
Well I Just looked in my tank with it on its side stand and the gas is a lot lower than where I filled it. (didn't ride it far after fill up.) I guess filling it on its side stand should fall under common sense considering more gas fills into the left portion of the tank when its not straight up and down. Reminds me of the saying "whats common sense to one man, another man will never learn" I guess I'm somewhere in the middle http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I stand corrected. Fill it on the side stand and fill it from the gas cap side so you're not dragging the hose across the paint.

I read somewhere that if you fill it too full the gas will flow into the overflow tube and stall the bike while you are riding. Not a good thing. If you fill it with it on the side stand won't the gas be up to the top of the tank when you stand it up?
How full do you fill it when on the side stand? As much as you can get in it or till you see it on the metal thing?

i fill it on the side stand to about an inch above the bottom of the neck
I fill mine on the side stand up to the bottom of the metal neck. I accidently filled it higher than that and it poured out of the overflow tube. I wasn't sure that was what that tube was until I checked the liquid coming out. It didn't stall on me with that happening.
I admit I've given my tank a gasoline bath a couple times....

I fill my bike right to the top of the gas cap, the light comes on at 150 - 160 miles, I can usually go about 40 more miles before it sputters on takeoff. I have gone 190 to 195 miles a few times and 202 miles is my best yet. it took 19.2 litres to fill.

I have an 04 Nomad with the 5 gal tank. the light normally comes on around 145 mile to 155 mile. I have gone as far as 212 mile without running out of gas. It was another 24 mile to a town where there was a gas station, so I stopped at a farm house and the nice farmer gave me some gas to get me to Springfield, Co. Farm houses were very scarce in that area.

Thanks Wolfman, I am still resistant to all that metricity. Save for my metric bike of course.
I sometimes go above the metal plate in the neck of the tank, but stop before covering the small tube. On other forums Nomad riders have said the bike stalls if the small tube is submerged. Sounds like some here are saying you can just fill it on up and ignore the tube. That would really increase the range. Mine takes 3.8-3.9 gal when the last bar is left and 4.5 when the reserve light comes on. Range 170 miles or so at that point depending on wind and how hard I have been pushing it.
Are others filling the tank all the way up the neck above the metal plate without problems?
I have put 5.1 in mine as I posted on one of the other threads. I usually get around 180 miles before I fill up and put 4.1 to 4.5 in. Was at 208 when I put the 5.1 in.
I fill about 1/3 to 1/2 up the neck..more than that it dumps out the tube and you smell gas for 20 miles...and worse...some may spill over on my paint.

I get about 160 miles before the light comes on. I fill about 4 gals +/-.
I rode a Suzuki C50 with no gas gauge for over 2 years and never ran out of gas.
With the Nomad, I ran out of gas on my 3rd tank of gas. I only rode about 178 miles on the tank, but I ran out. I got terrible gas mileage at first. I average between 37-43 now.
I think I was so use to the high revving C50, that I never shifted into 5 gear, most of the time, I was in 3rd or 4th on the highway.

Ringadingh - your scooter looks about the same as mine, how the h_ll you gitting 250 Km's to the light? When mine was new it went 260 km and the light came on - now 200 Km and the light is on! What is you Power Commander set too? I am guessing you got K&N Filter - V&H Baggers and a PCIII. The local stealer says since I got the Fairing / Trunk & lowers my scooter weighs to much and pushes too much wind so the mileage will suck! I called Bull sh*t and have kinda given up for now! I would like to know what yours is set up like?? IF that would be possible. I din't expect it to get super good mileage but would be happy if the light came on around the 250 - 260 Km mark again! Does yours get the same mileage 1 up as 2 up? Mine is the same whether I am 1 up or 2 up pullin a loaded trailer!

Wouldn't rec'd over filling the tank pass the metal plate, because then if its hot tank will build pressure and it will over spill down the right side and onto your shiny pipes. Then it burns on and looks like crystals. Then you will sit there for half an hr buffing it off with chrome polish. I speak from experience.

"When I fill mine that way if It goes an inch into the neck tube on the tank the dang thing pees gas out the overflow so I know it is full."
I ususally fill mine within an inch of the top of the neck tube and have never had fuel run out the overflow. Is there something wronge with my overflow? I fill it on the side stand and usually put in about 4.5 to 5.0 gal.

Mine is an 03 I can get around 170-190 miles its all stock. When filling I have filled pass the metal plate and it leaks all over my tank [stop doing that] now I have know problems. I only run 93 octane had to run 89 one time and it went to pinging bad and only got 150-165 before light came on. always fill up when the light comes on I heard the same thing as some of you about it being very hard to restart, don't feel llike being stuck on the side of the rode.

I remember once when I ran out of gas.....hubbie and I had bike to bike intercom at the time. I told him my low fuel light came on.....he said okay. I was following him......he kept going and going....... :-/
Then the bike started spurtering. Told him I think I'm running out of gas. He said .....well slow down. About that time the bike died and I started coasting over to the shoulder. I just said to him 'no problem'. ::)
He said he did not hear me when I told him the low fuel light came on.....but he said'okay'? LOL
Its called selective hearing. It happens to me all the time. As soon as my wife starts saying something I tune out and say "ok"

After I got back from Iraq I failed my hearing test. I never seemed to get any fair warning to put my earplugs in!
I filled up yesterday. I had 160 miles on the clock. Never gone that far on a tank before the light comes on. I got 48 mpg. :) I have an 02 and the specs I find says it has a 5 gal tank. When I filled up, it took 3.3 gal. I don't think I have a 5 gal tank. I think it's 4.3.

I filled up at 161 and put in 4.8 gallons. 33 mpg after the new PCM III. Major shock! I have noticed though that sometimes my light comes on very early or my guage reads that I'm low and I end up only putting in 3+ gallons.
