Which covers does everybody have?? I just bought a marine radio and the cover it comes with requires that i make the opening almost 4" x 8 1/4". has anybody else used one this large or does it not fit??? I don't want to cut into the fairing only to find out that it doesn't work.

Here's the one I had (in black):

You do have to enlarge the opening substantially so it will fit.

I have the same as CJ - mine came from Hoppe and I installed it in a Premuix fairing - had to cut the old box out and enlarge but it seems to work the best! No water gets inside and the spring loaded door works and looks good!

This is the type I have (in black), It fits with no cutting or modifying, and has served me well for the 6 years I've been using it. You can shop around and find it at much lower prices...........;)

That's the cover I originally had on mine. I got rid of it after a couple of weeks because it wouldn't stay in the open position on its own and trying to adjust volume and so forth while riding became dangerous.

Ok, next question........"What is the best way to cut the fiberglass?" I've heard that a jig saw is not the best way because it could tear and/or shatter the area that I'm cutting.
Did you keep it centered CJ? Or did you have to drop it a little lower? It seems like it would hang over the bottom by a little bit( about 1/16").

I always leave it closed. If I have to make any adjustments, I use the remote that I have mounted near my left grip. :D

When I switched rain covers, my fairing had already been painted, so I had to be extra careful. I covered the area with blue painter's tape, then made my markings on it. I tried to center it up/down and left/right on the panel where the stereo mounts. It's more difficult than it sounds because the corners are all radiused on the fairing and mine wasn't exactly "square", so it's hard to find a point of reference. I ended up eyeballing it.

Essentially a rectangular box shape the same size as the outside measurements of the part of the rain cover that goes through the opening. I used a Dremel tool with an abrasive cut-off wheel and TOOK MY TIME. I then test fitted the cover into the opening and used a flat file on the inner fairing edges to get a good clean fit.

Yeah, I opted not to use the remote like that. It wasn't the look I wanted.

That's what I was wanting to know.
If I get a marine radio then a cover shouldn't be necessary, right?
I know you should take care when washing the bike
but shouldn't a marine radio hold up to rain?

The Harmon Kardon stereo in my Harley has no rain cover, but it was designed specifically for motorcycle use. A lot of people with aftermarket fairings use just a car stereo, which would not be weatherproof, necessitating the use of a cover.

I never had a rain cover over my radio and it was never a problem, and all I used was a car stereo. I was just a bit carefull when washing the bike, rain never bothered it.
