Most of you are aware I went down back in August and suffered a pretty good leg injury. The bike wasn't hurt too badly.

I have the parts coming in over the next week or so and, over the winter, I'll replace the damaged parts. Nothing too serious and nothing too challenging. The toughest is going to be the handle bars and that's not going to take long at all.

Anyway, it seems my lawsuit is coming to the end. No one has set any final number but, between m attorneys experience and that of one of my friends that was in a similar situation, I may be looking at a sizable sum coming to me after everyone gets their cut.

With all that in mind, I was playing the what if game - you know the one - it's the one you play when you get that lottery ticket in your hand....

So, I've been looking at trading in the Nomad in the spring and getting a Road King. Of course I had to go shopping for all the accessories, including a tour pack. So, what do you think? Would you hold it against me? I know I'd have to go to the "enthusiast" level, down from the full fledged, flag waving, Nomad nation member.

BTW, the Road King is the only H-D I like and seem to "fit". I feel cramped on al the others, including the full dresser tourers.

I went riding with a friend of mine this summer that has a Vulcan Classic and a neighbor of his that has a Road King. I was on my 2005Suzuki Boulevard. I just loved the look of that Road King and because of that I started looking. I have been a proud owner of a 2004 Nomad because of that for a couple of months now. Long story short, I would not hold it against you if you got a Road King!!

Hold it against you? Hell no. We are more apt to feel sorry for you. Owning an inferior piece of equipment is nothing to be proud of. :D

Ask Brad, I understand his equipment is quite inferior.

Nope. My bike doesn't leak oil. I guess it's because it doesn't have a clutch pushrod shaft seal.

Well it might not make sense to you TC but I guess what I was trying to say is that style wise according to my eye sight the Nomad looked similar to the Road King. I am not a big fan of HD so I did not go in that direction but don’t have any thing against people that ride them. I will say it again that I am proud of MY NOMAD.

I couldn't hold it against you either...:D

I would mention that if you think the Ultra is too-tight of a feel for you that you should find a HD dealer that has a "Fit-Shop" and ask them to use different bars, seats, and etc to see if in fact they couldn't get it to give you more room.

The Road King is on the same frame as all the their tourers... so any change in the feel of the models is all in the seats, bars and etc...;)

Harley builds a nice bike these days. No one would blame you for riding what you want to ride. If you have the money then go for it. Takes several dollars to own one.

I'll probably get shot for it but if you are interested in something with "Road" in the title, check out a Yamaha Road Star Silverado. From just sitting on bikes in the showroom the ergonomics on it are a *lot* better than the HD Road King. The only downside may be cruising range, I haven't checked that out.

If someone has the Harley "bug", the only cure is getting the Harley. A Road Star, a Vaquero, or a Nomad aren't going to get it done. Most of you are missing the big picture here.

When I got the nomad in 07 the road king was the only other bike I had in mind. The nomad had a longer wheel base and so do I so we just fit better on the vulcan. If ya want it get it!

I was in the same boat, except I wasn't hurt but the other guy's insurance covered fixing up my beloved '07 including the cost of a new Ultra trunk on the back. I looked at spending time and $$$ to restore my 55,000 mile Nomad and after test riding a Road Glide Ultra and having my wife say "let's get it" the deal was done and after a couple thousand miles I am very happy. More power and better fuel mileage are nice things to have. It was expensive, fortunately it is also awesome. Ride the bike YOU want.

I test drove a Soft Tail and 2 Road Kings before I chose my Nomad. I chose the one that was/is best for me. You have my respect for getting back on after going down.

Chose the ride that's right for you and don't worry about what anyone else thinks about it.

Previous to purchase of my Nomad, I was only interested in "American Machines". I wasn't even serious about the Nomad "test ride". I thought that I was just going to give a "comparison opinion" for the sales guy after turning him down on 3 H-D's. Instead I came back from the test ride and bought the Nomad.

It's called a vaquero

markclark57
10-30-2011, 11:54 PM
Naw, don't like the Vaquero faring or the way they angle the bags back. Not much for the sterio either. I figure IF I was going to upgrade it would be better to rebag the Nomad than to strip down the Vaquero and build it back to a Nomad. Sat a Vaquero at the dealer, I think it sits higher than my '06. Gotta have my side open bags though. Guess I'll just keep the '06. I already own that one.

Monkeyman
10-31-2011, 02:36 AM
I'm pretty sure the Vaquero bags are identical to the 1500/1600 Nomad bags other than the smooth door (which I'm digging!). I think they attached the mounting bracket (hook thingy) a bit higher up but there's still the original indentation in the Nomad place.

The fairing has a bit too many angles for my taste but I'd still ride a Vaquero (if I could afford one).

It's the same frame as the other 1700s (Nomad, Classic, Voyager) so they all probably sit a bit higher than the 1600. They shortened the wheelbase by an inch or so, so they're probably trying to make up the leg room somewhere. The Vaquero is factory lowered so if that's too tall for you, I wouldn't bother with a new Nomad.

ponch
10-31-2011, 07:10 AM
It depends on what makes the most sense. A Voyager comes with ABS, the Nomad and Vaquero do not come with ABS in this country. The Vaquero can be had with a QD backrest, the others have a fixed backrest or trunk. May be the best compromise is a Nomad with the Voyager/Vaquero handlebars if ABS wasn't a deal breaker. I don't care if the bags are side or top opening, a helmet doesn't fit in either.

I love the Vaquero, fits me just fine.(5'9") My son Bill and I test rode them at Americade this past June. I have been on lots of test rides and since I bought my Nomad in '01, I hadn't found a replacement until I tried the Vaquero. If I am lucky in the future I will own one.

A 3/4 helmet fits perfectly in the 1500/1600 bags.

I don't know of any side bag that will hold a full face helmet. Maybe a goldwing. I guess that is why you put a trunk on if you can keep it cleaned out.

It's not the style of the bags that I object to. The mounting angle is just a bit odd. They are mounted at an angle that makes the rear part of the bags closer together. The smooth doors are nice. When I get my scratches taken out I might fill in the gooves on mine.

It's no the angle. Back in the redwoods, some of us compared them and thought that they are shaped different/had different dimentions. They were changed to follow the lines of the bike. I don't know...YMMV I guess. I don't like the way the bags look on the new Nomad and Voyager, but there are pros and cons with each bike.
