View Full Version : acknowledging other riders
I'm getting to the point where if the other rider doesn't have a brain bucket on I don't wave because most of them don't wave or can they tell if I'm not on a HD at a glance? Now HD touring bikes usually wave maybe because they are enjoying the ride like I'm am and not just bar hopping:shrug:

This discussion was just posted in the last month with a question about waving at other riders. I've pretty much stopped waving at every Tom, Dick and Suzi on a bike. Too many people on two wheels these days and it gets ridiculous to be honest with you. The type of machine does not affect that decison. I ignore them all. I would rather stop to help them when I see them sitting beside the road.

I will continue to be friendly with other motorcyclists. That's just who I am.

Sometimes I'm too busy paying attention to the traffic on my side of the line to care about anybody else or their feelings.
sorry Bud, its impossible to keep up with every thread like it was a couple years ago.
I generally wave and find that most people wave back.

I wave, especially if it is a cold or rainy day. I figure if the other person is out riding in that weather they love riding as much as I do. They almost always wave back.

I always wave. It's like finding a blind man at a nudist colony... It's not that hard.

I wave at everybody. It's a geographical neighborly thing around here where we wave from cars and trucks. The only two wheelers who don't wave back are on scooters.

Or BMW's:tup:
Here in Germany most riders wave....what I notice is that the clowns on Harleys who think they are tough guys don't wave nor do many of the crotch rocket riders, but the rest are pretty friendly. I guess if you ride just for the fun of it, you appreciate other riders, but if you are out to make an impression on folks, well, I don't know. I ride and I wave but I do get pissed with others don't return the courtesy.

I wave at everybody. I'm just a naturally friendly guy. I even waved at the blind idiot who cut me off the other day although I didn't use quite as many fingers as I normally do.

Lar, If you didn't see the thread that is similar to this one, you're not spending enough time with us that do. The shame of it!
Oh, last two rides I did, I decided after the first 30 minutes if I was going to bother. If the majority weren't waving back by then, I would give up for the rest of the day. And as it turned out, no one was waving by the end of the day. I shouldn't be the one starting the wave all the time. I know, what a dickhead. Well I recently took a test that proved beyond a doub't that I'm still a dickhead from high school. So there. :bird:

There is the same sort of thread circulating on the other bike forums, it's titled do you wave at dickheads? Many said no.:P:P:D

Well, there you go.
Maybe I should remove the " I'm A Dickhead" sign from my wind screen.

I wave at ALL riders, and usually first. I don't let others decide if I am going to be friendly or not, I decide that. Maybe the other rider is having a bad day and a random wave may make a little difference, maybe not. Oh Well. I also wave at marked units and horse trailers. My choice, not theirs.
Thanks for your time

I can't tell what bike oncoming riders are on, and I wave if they wave first.

On the open road, I will wave most of the time. In town, no wave. I am seldom on Interstates but it is also a no wave zone for me.

Usually I can tell when a group of bikers are coming and I can see their left hand off the bar I flash them the low wave...

Well Brad, now we are all impressed: you can actually can see oncoming motorcycles. Perhaps you should add "most perceptive" to your signature line! :D
Years ago my understanding was that two fingers with arm out to the side meant all clear ahead (no police). And arm angled down with index finger (Note I said index finger) extended meant speed trap ahead. But I guess with radar detectors that has been lost.

If you are warning oncoming traffic about a cop ahead, you tap the top of your head (or helmet) with a flat palm.
If I am warning cagers, I either flash my hi/low beam or do the "slow down" gesture with my left hand (looks like patting an invisible dog on the head).

Why would you be alerting people in cars of a speed trap. If you get caught doing that here, you will be ticketed.

Because car drivers alert ME of speed traps. What goes around comes around. I don't do it right in front of the cop.

The past couple of years they set up a radar trap, but what a lot of people are finding out is that a un-marked cruiser is going back and forth, picking up people for flashing a warning. :wtf: I don't warn anyone, if you have a radar detector your good to go.

Besides, it would be hard to make a ticket stick when all he did was reach up and shift his helmet. Pushed on it a couple times. Not saying they wouldn't write it, but then they would have to prove you were actually warning people and not just shifting your helmet to a more comfortable position.

I guess the cops in Vermont must not have enough to do. :D Out here, there are too few cops spread too thin to operate like that.

California tried to do that to motorist that they "thought" was signaling a radar trap and lost terribly so they gave up. It started back in the CB days when a trucker would announce on his CB "my bird dogs barkin'".. It violates free speach. Gerry if I was in your neck of the woods I'd fight it..

And you would be right to fight it. But would you win, I'm not sure. I'll have to see if giving the ticket is legal.

They double up here quite often.
At three majors intersections around the local hospital, lots of accidents happen. Several times a year there are at least 6 cruisers positioned to watch for red light runners. And speeders coming into the area. They make a lot of people unhappy.
I wave at every biker. It's the way I ride, it's a habit. And I really don't give a sh*t if they wave back or not.
