I backed my Nomad out of the garage this morning to take a ride and I accidently laid it over on its right side. Spent the next 1/2 hour trying to locate a neighbor to help me pick it up. No luck. I went on the internet and found out how to lift a heavy bike and boom zing I got it back up!
Got a small scratch on the underside of the right crash bar by the bags but nothing else hurt except my pride! Guess I need to pay a little more attention to what I am doing with this heavy bike!

I would think that most of us have done it at least once, and the others are fibbers.

Don't worry about it. Everyone does it. Generally the first thought is "Oh Crap!".
In your driveway and not at a stop light is the correct way to learn how to pick it up.

Good job on not having to learn how before then.
Consider the minor error training. Also always back up slowly and use the front hand brake...if you try to back up too quickly and use the brake, you will lose it. I've done it and I'm sure many others here have done the same thing.

I've done it also. It's really embarrassing if you're showing your newly aquired bike to friends and family. Had to get them to help get it back up. One time it was dark and nobody was around. I figured it out and got it back up without help.

I suspect most of us have done it MORE than once, and the rest are fibbers. ;)
Please don't ask why I said that.

Not me. Never done it. Ever. And never done it in front of a dates house, either. First date at that. She was less than impressed. I mean, if I had done it which I didn't. :)

Your certainly not the first guy to have that happen to, and you learned how to pick it up as well.
I have heard you can avoid scraping the bar by putting your heel between it and the pavement. No scratch on the bar at all, and a great 3 week limp too. I think I read that somewhere.....

So how do you lift a 800 lb bike? I havn't dropped mine but I've had my foot slip some on gravel and I know I just got lucky.
Thanks,
James

Geezz, you guy that are tipping your bike over need to pay more attention to what you are doing.
I have never tipped mine over but if I did I would just pick it up.
I hear it will only tip to the engine and bag guards, how hard can it be to lift it from that far down.
You guys need to hit the gym or something.http://www.vulcanbagger.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

We had a thread on exactly that subject last year, I'll see if I can find it.
Here it is.

When I dropped my Nomad, it was at an intersection, because of the heat here, large trucks cause the asphalt to ripple at approaches to intersections, sometimes these ruts are more than 6"deep. Anyway, I stopped not realizing I was sitting on a high spot, went to put my feet down, and there was nothing there. Over I went. Some jerk in a BMW behind me starts honking his horn, as if that's going to get my bike out of his way. Still straddling the bike, I reached down, grabbed the bars, and stood it up. Sometimes I amaze myself.

Wow, your alot calmer than I would have been. I think I would have walked back to him and asked if his blowing the horn was going to make my bike stand back up. >:(

Dropped my Nomad one time backing out of the carport. Reason being was the neighbor lady was going by and waved at me. When I waved back it started going right. Knew I couldn't hold it just let it drop gently to the grass. Luckily she had already passed by the time the drop happened. I got my butt to the seat and with some effort managed to right the bike.

I was anything but calm. It's probably a good thing I didn't have my 40 caliber friend with me. I gave the guy some suggestions on what he could do with his horn and also some physically impossible tasks to occupy his time.

I was at a friends house and got to be time to go. So I got on the bike lifted the side stand, and my friend starts another topic. We talked for a couple more minutes, then he says, well come in the garage and I'll show you. So I sort of get off the bike with the side stand up. Not a pretty dismount....

Dropped mine several times. First time was about 2 weeks after I got it, backing out of the garage. Another time I forgot to put the kickstand down. Dropped it a couple of times in public, wife was on the back, she just hops off and helps me lift it, we almost have it down to a science now.

Yep, did it today too. And on the right side as well. Got the left side of the rear tire up against a big swell in the asphalt while going backwards into a parking spot, down she went. First time for this bike (2011 Voyager ABS), I'm sure it will not be the last. Came up really easy though.

I dropped my 01 1500 in traffic out in Cal. Cars bearing down on you at 60 mph give you ambition quick, and i had 3 broken ribs to begin with
I was down on the right, and forgot to pull the side stand out. Fortunatly my wife was able to do that part at the last second. I had phneumonia too, and at 5'10" tippin the scales at 150 pounds, I see no reason why anyone needs any help, other than stuffing the hernia back in place......
That lesson taught me to never drop the bike again, and so far I haven't.

Don't worry about it Dale, some guy very close to My House came home after a long ride
pulled into the driveway and put the kickstand down in a crack. As he got off the bike it slowly proceeded to lay itself down for a nap. No harm done, but it was definately my, I mean his OH S**T moment! He also told me not to hit the front brake to hard in a slow tight turn!

I saw Rt 66 like that Cj, near some place called Bagdad. On my Liberty Bike I did the same drop as you here in NH in a pot hole after dark. Pot holes here are bottomless pits.

Oh all of a sudden type of thing. This last winter I was trying to get a little more off the shoulder of the road, at a almost walking speed. And rode just off the asphalt into the newly applied sod and grass and went plop into the mud just like that. Talk about muddy pride. =r=

My latest drop, I didn't even know it went down at the time. . . First day of the road trip for the move to Phoenix a strap came loose and over she went in the trailer. Sh*t!!! Now I get to buy Patricia a new seat from where the clutch went through her seat. Also, anyone know a good M/C body and paint shop in Phoenix? Scratched up the back if the fender on the trailer door too.
This was my first time picking up a bike in "Very" close quarters too. It's a lot different when there's no place to stand on the low side of the fall.

Mark, the lower hold down came off first. This is why you duct tape the lower hooks to the trailer hold hold downs. Not that this info does you any good now. If there is a pic, I don't see it.

I have had my Nomad for a little over a month and I have dropped it twice. The first time was when I thought I had put the stand out and found I did not when it started to go down…just let her go since there was no stopping with that much weight. The second time I was backing out then turned the handle as I was backing out to get it pointed in the right direction. When I used the front brakes to slow down since the drive is on an incline, tires locked and down it went. What I have done now is adjusted the front brakes down so that they are not as sensitive and tire wont lock on me. Haven’t had much of a problem since doing that.

Yep...backing out of garage...foot slipped..and of course hubbie not home. Nice neighbor helped me pick it up...no hurt me or bike. Ken has almost done the same thing in our garage....darn slick floor we need to coat it with something I guess.

I got off of my Nad once in the garage..Thought for a second, did I put that kick stand down? Turned around to watch it fall over..It had great balance. At least that is one of us. I have been known to be a little off balance now and then.

In the parking lot of Mike's Famous HD near the Delaware bridge. Wife on the back and in front of hundreds of other riders. Tried to make a slow, max-tight left turn with said wife and luggage having significantly raised my center of gravity. She stepped off nicely. Got plenty of help righting the bike (I was holding up the line of departing bikes).
Then, when I couldn't re-start the bike, someone asked if it had a "tip-over" sensor. I didn't know. He said turn the electric off/on. It started right up.
Now THAT was embarassing.
