View Full Version : Rear crash bars withOUT helmet locks?

Is there such a thing? One of my winter projects is to relocate the helmet locks to the bar ends and I think the "built in" helmet locks on the crash bars detracts from the look.

Really
I moved mine and don't even notice the "built in" brackets.
I never had anyone ask "Hey, what are those things on your rear guards ?"
Just paint them flat black and no one will even know they are there.

OR- hack them off, grind it smooth and have the bar rechromed. :)

Both "interesting" ideas.

TC- *I* would know they were there.
Utah- If there's something else out there, I could probably save money by buying something already done. Or not.

Not being a smart ass. Just curious.
I have a buddy who cleans the underside of his bike when washing it.
Do you do that?
I ask because when I told him no one sees the underside of his bike so they would not know it was dirty, he gave me the same answer you just did.
*I* know it is dirty.:wtf:

I have a 1500, and I moved the locks to the sissy bar. Some have moved them to the license plate holder. Does the 1600 have the helmet locks located in a spot other than the rear guard?

He wants to move them but he wants to get rid of the brackets on the guards or get new guards without the brackets.
Does the 1600 have the helmet locks located in a spot other than the rear guard? No it dose not.
I relocated mine to the bolt in the lowers.

I had to go out and look.
I guess I'm not that fussy.
I don't believe anyone has ever commented on the brackets to me. But then again it's a metric and nobody does an inspection that close to a metric.

TC likes the locks for playing cards in the spokes.

I laid my plate down and put the locks there, but never use them. Gwyn locks her new full face lid with a pistol lock to the 1600 grab bars. I just clip mine on the mirror and around the throttle grip.

Only morons and cops will steal a lid in NH.

TC, if you would throw that thing into a corner (see pics below) everyone on the side of the road can see the underside!

I have thought about moving our helmet locks but have not done so because of those brackets. I'd find a way to put a LED light there...... See ya later got to go to the Effingham truck-o-mat to find the right light.

I just realized the helmet locks themselves unscrewed. I got one off easily. The other won't budge. Must be excessive use of Loctite. I'll try with a better screwdriver tomorrow. I'd really hate to strip the screw head.

Really a good idea. Until I get a fairing (probably next year), I need a place to put a bottle of water and my cell phone.

/Monkeyman is off to look for a leather bottle holder/pouch/

There's an underside to our bikes? :wtf: :-o

I moved my locks to the license plate also and left the brackets where they are. Granted they are not that noticeable, but do take away from the "clean line" look if inspected closely.

I took off everything made a gasket because there isn't one, and there should be on paint, and used what was left of the oem bolts. Cost $0 .00.

Wanna buy a plate braket mount?

Monkyman, If you wanna go cheap and cut off the lock mounts you can cut so close as you dare, then file up the cuts with hand files, #4, the #2, then sand with course emery, to fine emery, then to 400 grit wet, 600 wet, 1000 wet, 2000 wet and apply finger nail polish to that. No rust will happen.

Mac,

I was just playing around with trying to lay my plate down last week, couldn't quite come up with anything I was satisified with. Would you mind taking a picture dead on? What was throwing me is when you take off the stock plate holder, it's bolted onto the fender by two bolts pretty close together. What did you do, just drill those two holes through the license plate?

Top Cat

I laid my plate down as Mac did.
I cut a piece of Plexiglas for a backing plate, bolted that to the fender using the same bolts I took form the original mount.
Then using a license plate frame from Walmart I bolted the plate and frame to the Plexiglas.

I moved my helmet locks to the front of the bike. I used the top mounting hole on each of the plexiglass fork mounted lowers. I got a set of chaps for the little saddlebag crash bars with pockets, and they stay on all the time. You don't notice the locks (unless there are helmets locked in them), and the little pouches on the chaps are another place for storage of smaller items, and we need all the storage we can get when on a trip. :D

Monkeyman, I never pay any man to do something I can do. I have lots of tooling for metal work and other, and if I wanted to cut of the brakets, it would take about 1 hour each side to get to finished. I'ld wizz wheel off the brakets and then wizz wheel closer. Then file closer yet, and finish file with a #2 cut file which gets fairly smooth.

Wrap a magazine or a dowel in course emery to get the file marks out, again in a medium cut to get the course scratches out, then fine and so one, untill I h ad a mirror finish. The smoother the finish the less chance of rust and to gam dam T it a coat of clear nail polish.
.................................................. .................................................. ...........

Bull I used the oem backing plate holder and drilled 2 holes in it to match the 2 holes in the fender.

Clearance is tight to get the plate bolts back in, so I slipped in a bit of foam to hold the bolts up in the holes. After tightening the plate, I pulled out the foam.

I added no parts that were not there execpt for a rubber gasket to be on the paint.

I had bolts and the oem braket left over.

The oem plate holder has a 'stand off' molded into it.

Seeing the plate dead on is just seeing the plate dead on.... It gives no hint as to how I got there. It just shows 2 chromed acorn nuts, the 2 lid locks and the tag.

I did not drill any holes in the fender, just the plate holder. It's been a while now, and I think the plate hold is upside down, That molded stand off was to the chromed stantion that was removed.

I may have made a 1/4" addition of ABS waste plastic from another project. I will go see as a refresher sometime time today. I have been hard at replacing every bit of rotting cloth in my 86 converstion van since Sept 13th. In the doing I discovered the air pump manifold has a broken bolt into the passanger side exhaust manifold. The van needs to be registered and pass inspection this month and I am a little short on time. But I will be working at the barn entrance for this work today and so near the bike. All the other carpet, cloth head liner, wall up holstery has been done far from the barn for better access to the sewwing machine. Al the upholstery is from Ocean State Job Lots at 2 buck a yard, so a lot of work was done for the head liner and wall prep in Polar Fleece, and then the same work again in the upholstery selections. None of this is pre-molded stamped out factory fit stuff. The most exp ensice part was the new carpet. The over all cost in materials for the whole thing is about 160 bucks.

The dammed 3-M glue cost as much as the carpet.

Mac,

That is what I did the other day, used the plastic license holder, put some rubber down under it, drilled two holes in the bottom of it the same size as the two bolt holes that go through the fender.

Problem I was having, is because the plastic holder has a lip of sorts, when I would tighten down the two bolts, would lift the top end, or the end closest towards the seat.

Wasn't satisfied with that, so put it back OEM style. I was figuring the only way to fix that would be to put some washer type deals under the plastic where the bolts go to hold it tight, or go the route like TC did.

I think TC used plexiglass and I used a hunk of black ABS scrap, both 1/4" as a riser/spacer. Evidently he had a hunk of scrap plexi around, and I had ABS.

It was a little work, and there was a 'way' to assemble it, which was a little tricky, as space over all is limited, but you only do it once, unless pain is going to happen, then you do it once more.

I will take for free anyday over buying. I will take cheap in terms of costs with my own labor, till I get what ever it is I am after.

Today is day 16 working out a new interior of my conversion van. So far I am pleased with that out come. Besides coming out well, the costs are still under 200 bucks total. I priced out a carpet from JC Witney, and the lowest cost for just carpet was 500 bucks.

I just think you were working too fast, almost got it, but not quite.

At one point around here I thought all you guys were rich , but later found I was WRONG. But still to often guys drop dimes on simple things that would save them more Beer Money.

Another example currently on another thread is the Vista Cruise. Like about everyone, I thought the bar clamp and bar to hold the grip clamp, and operating lever was ugly. So I worked out a cheap mount of nothing more than a 2 hole section of metal plumbers tape, which could be improved still, but I can't see it, so I don't bother.

This leaves me with the chromed strap clamp, it's rubber, and the lever, and that's it .

Now I hear the lever is too ugly , so I guess I might have to mock up a lever in alloy, file, polish, and checker the tab, and make it bright.

I am not going to drop 200 bucks on a Break Away, I have better things to do with my limited fundings, like pay rent and eat red meat.

The only way I could justify a Break Away, is if I lived some place where the roads were long and straight.

It is a gremlin bell. :D One on each side mounted to where the crash bars meet the frame. I had to relocate them from where they are in the photo to inside the frame to the reg/rectifier bracket. Where they were in that picture, they were bouncing on the asphalt and grinding off (even lost one) when I would be hard in the curves. It did take me a while to figure out what that "tinkling noise" was when I was playing in the twisties. I noticed one day I was missing a bell, the bracket and ring were still there, but bell was gone. While looking at the one on the other side, I noticed grind marks on it and the light bulb went off in my head, "that's the tinkling noise I had been hearing". Moved them in more toward the center, now they don't bump the road.

Bigger, faster. Eventually, you'd need a larger monitor, then one with a higher resolution. I have a quad core AMD Phenom II overclocked to about 4.3Ghz with more RAM than I'll ever need in a full size Antec case (looks like a piece of furniture) that cools everything well. I watch a 1080p vid on one 24" screen while I use the other 24" monitor to surf the web and get entangled in my few forums, irc's.

BD that ain't chrome it's silver duct tape (BD 3 times I put in a green ginnin' face. It won't happen)

Todd, yeah I save lots of little scraps of things. The hard part is remembering where in blue jumpin' blazes I left them. But that saved my day today. I cut the carpet wrong for the front of the van, getting the seat mounts off 1 inch. No way to adjust that out either.

So the fix was to use for copper house pipe insulation apx 1.25 inch, and wrap that around the seats pedistals to cover the missing gap in the carpet. Now you know I won't just leave that like that!

I cut some wall trim cloth and rolled that on the pipe insulation, after I made relief cuts so the foam would turn a circle. That worked slick.

There is a (sewwing term called piping too) Since I replaced the engine carpet with new, and I didn't have any means of finishing a raw carpet edge, I used the wall cloth, and pinched that real even around 3/8" manillia rope. On edge view it would resemble a lollilpop. With some care glueing the carpet to the engine cover in the van, and glueing that 'piping' hard to the carpet first, then to the engine cover last, the shape changes to more like a 'P' clamp on end view and that covers the raw edge.

It's crap like this I do well, since I don't ever pay a hired man.
