View Full Version : Harley Fairing
So.... I hate to post a new thread for this cause I know the info is out there.... But this search SUCKS!
I want to add a HD fairing to my 05 1600. I know I saw a thread once that had pictures of the brackets and a seperate bracket you had to make to hold the radio cause I want an inner and outer.
Does anyone make those brackets anymore?
I'd ideally like to buy the brackets, cut the bottom of the outer's headlight opening out, and have it fit.
Hopefully someone can point me in the direction of some brackets and some more posts so I can get this done. I don't have a huge budget, so I'll be buying it in pieces, but I wanted to buy the brackets and inner so I could check fitment (cause the outer bolts to the inner, right?)and then buy the outer and slowly buy the radio, speakers, and gauges throughout the winter.
Thanks for all the help guys

Lee Sido does or did make the brackets, also check with chuckster here, I think he may make them as well.

I think Joe( Chuckster) is the maker of the brackets now.. Lee gave it up! And Joe took over
Sent an email to Chuckster, so I'll wait to hear back from him.
Am I correct though that the inner fairing gets mounted to the brackets and the outer attaches to the inner?

Perfect! I think I got it now. Might just have to try and make some brackets myself first and if they don't turn out go to option two

Hey there Mick. I was lucky enough to buy my fairing completed from a KawaNOW member that changed things up from a Nomad to a St-1300. I also bought his H.D. tour pak at the same time.
Anyway, other than helping to put it onto my 06' Nomad and making one alteration to accommodate my light bar He {"strobe"} did the install. So I can't help you much, but here is a link to his web site/blog with explanations, instructions, and advice.
http://nomad.strobel.ws/hdfairing.php
"strobe" didn't cut the headlight on the fairing for the headlight, and used the H.D. headlight instead. Less work and fits just dandy. I love the fairing and wouldn't be without one ever again.
Good luck with the project. Don't forget to post photos when you're done.
Just info for everyone, Chuckster does make the brackets for $85 yet. He sent me this site which has info about the radio bracket I was talking about: http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/172/94/
I think I'm going to use this template to try and make some brackets myself first: http://home.insightbb.com/~kpmh.002/N-Fairing-Pics/Brackets.PDF
I'd like to save the money on the brackets, but I guess we'll just have to see how they turn out. lol
Thanks for all the input. This mod will prob take all winter, but I can't wait!!!

Hey MC
Good Luck making the brackets yourself. If you have the right tools, I am sure you can do it.
I didn't, and I ordered chuckster's - fine quality work!
I have to admit, these were far more solid then any crappy thing I would have done myself.
I hope it works out well for you, either route!
Cheers
B.
Luckily my father-in-law works at a shop that makes feed trucks/trailers and has easy access to good quality aluminum and tools. We made a set of aluminum risers for my Honda Aero that turned out great.
I've done a lot of looking online, and it looks like 1/8" aluminum will be soft enough to cut with a good quality jigsaw or dremel with diamond bit. Guess I'll have to play around and if they turn out like crap, I'll order a pair.

When I started the fairing project a couple of winters ago, the Lee Sido brackets taking a long time to get, if they were available at all, so I ended up doing my own basically using those brackets as a template. It took a lot of cutting, fitting, etc. to get there. Had I to do it again, I'd spend the $85 and get Chucksters. I'm sure they fit and look a lot better than mine. For what it took me, the price is a bargain... Trust me.... ;). If you're into DIY, then it's a neat project to take on. It was a good excuse for me to finally get a Dremmel tool... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif. One thing to remember is that the width of the upper tree where the bolts holes are is about a 1/4" less than the lower so I put a washer between the bracket and upper fork holes on each side when I mount the fairing. Keeps from stressing the whole thing too much. Another is to make the little L-brackets which hold the top of the brackets to the outer fairing out of steel. I used some aluminum brackets I had and one of them cracked due to the vibrations. I trimmed the headlight opening rather than use a harley headlight because of the cost of the light (it's ridiculous how much it would have cost) and because I thought the weight would maybe be an issue.
Good luck and have fun. If you got any questions, let me know. I have more pictures which may help.
Just my 2 cents..
Pete
PS. This is a good site too. He put a fairing and tour pack on his Nomad and did a lot of mods.

Great site. Thanks.
And like I said, I paln on doing this slowly over the winter so I can only spend a little money at a time. So if my brackets don't work, then it will be easy to spend the $85 later

Mick,
I wouldn't use the Aluminum and if you did I would get some 3/16, I use steel and either paint or chrome them your preference. The brackets do take some beating and the 1/8" aluminum won't hold up. You will have to weld small bracket tabs on the side plates and the steel works great for that too.
Thanks for the tips!
I'm pretty sure you will be getting my business for the brackets, but I just want to try and see what I can make since I'm on a pretty shoe string budget (hence the reason for trying to make a used Harley fairing work)
But even if I get something that works, it will prob look terrible and I won't want to keep it on the bike. haha http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Oh, and if I use aluminum, I def would not be attempting that weld!
Like I said my father in law works at a grain truck fabrication shop, so those guys are welding aluminum every day and they like to help with the occasional side project

lol, well the I told you so's can start coming. Got one bracket cut out and it was alright, but it was going to take a LONG time to make it look good enough to go on the bike, so it the scrap bin it went. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
Going the smart route and get a pair from Joe that I know will look and work great.
On a separate note, got a inner for $98 shipped and an outer for $125 on ebay, so we'll see if they are in as good of condition as they looked. Got a black inner and outer cause custom paint is next winter's budget. I got some store credit built up at the local bike shop (I worked IT where the owner worked and he's had some computer issues so he gave me a call) so I got the mounting hardware and a seal kit coming. Told him to wait for a shield until I mount it so I can get a better idea of what I want.
Thanks for all the input and links from everyone!

Mick - you still get points for trying, and bonus points for recognizing when to cut bait!
Enjoy the new fairing!
