I know that I have seen it posted here way back, but I cant seem to locate the post where one of the members used some HD exhaust on his Nomad. I was wanting info on using the actual mufflers not the head pipes from an HD. was the sound any better than the Cobra True duals or V&H baggers? Was there any issue with fitment or engine issues?

The only problem is if you have a stock Nomad exhaust system. You won't find any slip-on mufflers that will work due to the goat belly. You need an aftermarket set of headpipes, such as Cobra or V&H - then you can use any slip-on muffler as long as the inlet is the same diameter as the pipe.

I still have the HD mufflers that I ran for a while.
If interested let me know, they are sitting in my warehouse.
I put the V&H back on. The HD's are a bit quieter. Mine were drilled out so they're louder than stock HD's. The ones I used had more restriction in the right muffler than left. That is why I had to drill them out.

Im sure you could make up an adapter so you could use the HD mufflers with the stock head pipes.

I have Cobras on my Nomad right now. What I am looking for is deeper and I'll go ahead an admit it, louder. Loud is great for me, maybe not so much for the wife though. WOuld like to hear what the HDs sound like on a Nomad. I know it wont be teh Harley sound but would like some more rumble.

The pipes are much too small where they enter the goat belly. If he wants increased sound, he's going to want larger pipes. Plus, it would probably look like hell.

Might be looking at V&H for my next set. Does anyone know it the baffles are removable without major surgery?

Two screws and pull the baffle right out, quick and simple

They come out real easy and there are a few different ways you can mod them to change the sound, from quiete to loud.

V&H it is then, my Cobra's were damaged in the accident and more by me afterwards trying to mess with the baffles. Not much interested in "Quiet pipes". I like to ride the line between "hear them from a block away" and "ouch, that hurts my ears". :-)

Mark,
I took my baffles out and took the wrapping off...sounded good at idle but not quite good enough, then I took them to a Midas shop and had the 6" center piece cut out and the ends welded together...sounds perfect to me.

I'll try that if I don't like the stock sound/performance. Probably do my own welding. . . Wish I could do my own chrome. http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif

I had Screamin' Eagle mufflers on my Nomad when I traded it off. They fit perfectly to the V&H headers. The HD bolt points are different for hanging the muffler, but it is SUPER SIMPLE to make an adapter bracket.
I used a piece of 3/4" wide x 1/8" thick steel from Ace hardware. Cut it to length, and drill 4 holes in it.
Two of the holes bolt to the Nomad, the other two holes bolt to the HD muffler.

jestephens,
how did they sound in relation to cobras or the V&H?
Also what year were your screaming Eagles?

nubbs,
THey sounded pretty awesome, even with the Screamin' Eagle baffles in. Anyone on here that heard my bike at the National rally in NC would have heard it with modified baffles though. Before I went to the dealer to trade, I put the standard baffles back in and decided that's how I should have been riding all along. Super DEEP tone, and very tolerable (but still very noticable) volume.
I like the baffle design of the S-E vs the V&H, and I've never seen the insides of Cobra.
I'm not sure what year cans I had. They didn't say Screamin Eagle II, I know that much. I got them at a swap meet for $200

Jay,
Do you happen to still have the old V&H mufflers you'd like to part with? Mine has the chrome plating coming off all around the tops in the mounting bracket area. I emailed V&H and they won't sell just the muffler pieces.

Hacksaw, I have a Left side V&H muffler with the original baffle, but no right side. If you find a random RH muffler, you'll be in business http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif
