??? Ok, how many folks have this mod vs. the new tires? Next question, does the fact that the speed is about 5 miles off make the odometer and/or wrong as well? Like to have the correct speed but like having 100 dollars more... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif

I can subtract 5 (most of the time) but if it affects other readings and such, it may be worth it to get it done and over with (installed that is).

HELP....

YES, if your speedo is off 5-10% so will your odometer, which means more miles when you want to trade/sell. They make a gizmo I seen some place that will tune your speedo to accurate and it wasn't too pricey, $100? new tires are still not going to make the gauges 100% accurate.

Thanks, that was what I was looking at, the SpeedoHealer, 95.99 for the Nomad. My buddy here at work has a Honda and is speedometer was off by 14%. It looks easy enough for even me to install.

Do you have it installed?

From what some folks have told me, it seems worth it to get the healer.......Nico suggested ... maybe we can get a special group price on some! Worth a try.... Seems like no one is as concerned about the speed and odometer error as I am... maybe the "1st brand new bike I ever bought" symdrone? Looks like only a couple have taked the time to install one.

So I guess my real question the "old-timers" (BD, etc... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif) is do I really need to spend the money (I have it but do I NEED it.)

socwkbiker
09-07-2007, 08:35 AM
Old timers like BD and Nico will have a hard time responding since it's time for their mutual sponge bath and other unmentionable services.

I've been following this and it doesn't seem to be a major issue in performance or reliability. It seems to be a normal glitch with this bike. However, if you are really uncomfortable with it and the 5 mph is a serious enough concern, then install the part and feel better. Or you can go back to your stealer, let them know and find out what they are willing to do to make you happy.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it because even though you think you're doing 80, cops only see 75, which may put you under the speed limit on some highways. It makes sure that you keep top fuel in your tank so you get the best gas mileage as well as performing regular maintenance.

That's my 2 cents.

09-07-2007, 08:56 AM
Let me take a break form my sponge bath..... BD.. hang on a sec........... i'm cool with it the way it is... just don't care that it looks like i have more miles on the bike than i do.... i can live with thinking i get good gas mileage!!!

ScionO: Here's the rub. your speedo is of by about 10% but your odometer is off by about half that much or 5%. Both are fast. If you correct your speedo to read accurate with a SpeedoHealer, your odometer will be actually slow by about 5%.

I have no idea why kawasaki's instrumentation is inconsistant like that. One would think that the speedo and odo would be receiving the same math formula in calculating their respectives values but obviously not or they both would be off either way by the same %.

I'm thinking of a little larger diameter tire like 160/80/16 or 180/70/16, either from what my friends have told me correct the odometer to right on the money but the speedometer is still 5-6% fast. That would work for me. As long as the odometer is not racking up false mileage I'd would be good to go.

Yeah, my rear stone has lasted (really 7800ish on them right now) and actually still have a little tread left in the middle ..... But I use the "Groundhog Method" for tire replacement (see older posts on when to replace tires).....It REALLY needs replacing when I take the plunge!!!

09-08-2007, 04:05 PM
I decided to look at the rear tire brand on my bike last night as I need a new one. Lo and behold, it is a ME 880 Marathon. I bought the bike from a car dealearship the day it was traded in on a truck. Part of the deal was a new rear tire. I never even bothered to look at what brand they put on it. I was just happy to have the cruiser I had been looking for at a good price and low mileage. So far, I have 8900 miles on that tire. I plan to replace it with the ME 880. I can get the tire and mounting for about $180. That's the 150/80/16. Maybe I should try the 160 instead.

As a rookie to these bikes, I have seen many different sizes suggested for the Nomad... not sure what fits best or what... Please let me know what you end up with size wise.

Okay, I will admit that I have not read this full thread but have read enough to get an idea of the issue. The speedometer and Odometer are off and people are concerned. So the Speedo is about 5mph fast so what? Use that extra cushion to stay out of trouble. As for the odometer registering more miles than are actually on the scoot let's think about if for a moment. Let's say it is off by 10%, probably unlikely to be out that much but it gives easy numbers to work with, and let's say you put 6,000 actual miles on the bike. So the odometer registers 6,600 miles so what? Those 600 miles are not going to affect the resale value in any great amount. What will count at that time is how well you took care of the bike. So let's jump the mileage by a factor of 10. 60,000 actual miles and 66,000 showing, again I don't think that having only 60,000 showing on the odo is going to make that much difference over the 66,000. As for mileage. I like thinking that I'm getting 42 mpg (like my last tankfull) Hell, most of the time I live in the twilight zone anyway. Just ask my wife. In other words, don't sweat the small stuff. And save the 100bux for something else, like fuel so that you can put more miles on the scoot, or a new oversized ME880 so that you can reduce the error even more.
Just my 2 cents. IDaho

I aggree with your aggreement. And the more I thought about it and the more I read that most riders did not even know about the error or did know and did not care... I decided to go that route and put more light on the bike with the money.

Sometime I overanalyze and think about stuff using the "Newbie/Rookie" status as an excuse.

Thanks for the 2 cents....

Nico, that lake is on top of a butte on the edge of the Snake River Plain near Burley, Idaho. About 8000 feet I think. Very enjoyable ride getting there. It is NOT worth cracked ribs however.
