View Full Version : Rear ended on the way to work this morning - CRAP!

Sitting at a red light on the short ride to work this morning, suddenly the stopped SUV behind me guns it right into me. He claims that his floor mat caught his accelerator. I am OK except for a tender ankle and knee but the impact was mostly absorbed by what used to be a gorgeous custom painted H-D Ultra trunk, and the wompus rack bent into the fender a little bit. I think the rack bent because I steered into the empty left turn lane to avoid being pushed into the car in front of me so the SUV force was into the corner of the trunk as I turned to get the hell out from in front of him. Leaving some space helped out there. I rode the sad looking bike home and took the car to work. At least the guy who hit 'fessed up everything to the cop who happened to be right there at the corner gas station when he hit me.
I guess I'll get the estimate for replacing the Ultra trunk, mount and fender and in the mean time the old backrest will go back on.... http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/>

I'm glad it wasn't more serious. It could have easily been a lot worse.

Sorry to hear this.
Make sure you get checked out, you won't know if you have any back problems or muscle spasms, from trying to brace and get out of the way, until tomorrow or the next day.
Stay safe.

I am very happy you walked away from it and that your bike seems to be repairable.

I was in Mesa Verde NP last week where a bike was stopped at a stop sign and a large RV ran him over. The RV was running the stop sign and did no see the bike.

I'm surprised the SUV wasn't driven by a woman --LOL
SUV = soccer mom (usually )

Get it fixed and wait for the call from the other insurance company -cause they will try to settle
Good for you
Money (alittle) could be coming your way

That is my take on the mess, and I think the trunk absorbed a lot of the impact energy so I am glad my wife was not on the back. The tender ankle and sore knee are pretty much walked off and fine now so it is just the bike to deal with.

Glad to hear your not hurt badly, heal quick.

Yep, me too, always in gear with the bike pointed at an escape route when stopped at a red light. It worked out pretty well today - no real healing to do. Not the best of luck today but nothing to really bitch about in the big picture.

Sorry to hear about your accident, glad it was not more serious. You might want to consider having the frame checked out, probably its ok, but all that energy had to go some place and you don't want to get a settlement and find out later there are more problems.

I am taking the bike to the dealer this afternoon and they can go over everything since the bike was perfect before this morning. The custom painted H-D Ultra trunk will be a pain to get replaced and I don't know enough to say nothing else is damaged.

Replacing the Tour Pak is easy, there are lots of them available. Getting the paint job replaced will be an additional expense.

Once you have a trunk, there is no going back! I'll find out today or tomorrow if the bike is going to be repaired or totaled. It looks like the saddlebags took a bit of a hit as did the crashbars on the left. and the bike is pulling to the right a little bit now too so the frame may be tweaked. The saddlebag assemblies are $1056 each at ronayers.com and the dealer was leaning toward saying totaled at his first cursory inspection.

I am happy to be perectly healthy, and going batpoop crazy looking at the gorgeous weather through car windows...

It looks like I will be back on my good ol' Nomad, hopefully soon after the crash bars are replaced, saddlebags fixed, rear fender replaced and new H-D Ultra tour-pak is painted an installed. Actually I am sure I'll put the old back rest y back on while the tour-pak is in paint so I can at least regain two-wheeledness that much more quickly. :-)

Tim,

Glad to hear that the bike is repairable, and that you were not hurt other than superficial stuff. Especially glad that Amelia wasn't on the back when it happened....could've been a lot worse. How long will it take to get it back on the road?

I hope to find that out fairly soon. Bob Thomas' shop Unique Customs in Nicholasville will do the tour-pak paint again and that will probably take longer, but I'll put the old backrest on as soon as Gateway gets the other stuff done. Hopefully they can get to work next week - If I hear back from the Ins. Company today. Gateway quoted 6 hours of labor so hopefully parts will be fast.

Glad your okay. Sounds like much of your good fortune is due to your good riding habits such as leaving space at a stop, being prepared to steer left, realizing what was happening when he accelerated and reacting correctly. I was just telling a friend who is thinking of getting a bike that anyone can go sixty down the road. It is the little things that you must learn to keep safe and you just gave me an example of what he should be learning.

My best riding advice to anybody is to read David Hough's book "Proficient Motorcycling" ;) I am not good enough to give any better advice than that!

Meanwhile, I impatiently await my time to rejoin the few, the proud, the Nomad riders!

Is the insurance company for the guy that hit you paying for your repairs? I sure hope so. I know how expensive it can be.

We really need to pay attention to your "defensive driving" attitude because that obviously saved you from serious injury. Stopping far enough back and planning an escape route is essential to survival at any stop and very easilly overlooked. You did an awesome job.

Like the others here, I'm glad that you were not seriously hurt. It will be interesting to hear what the total was for the rebuild because all of the stuff that got bent in your accident is expensive. Best of luck to you.

The other guy's insurance (he is a mexican with no license but he had insurance!) is on the hook for 100% of repairs and some settlement for loss of use too. The dealer (he seems to be fairly staightforward and honest) decided the damage to the saddlebags was so minor that they could be easily repaired instead of being replaced so the total repair bill not including paint for the tour-pak is about $3000. The tourpak and wompus rack absorbed most of the damage of the hit and the fender damage was from the wompus rack being bent into the fender.
My bottom line take on this wreck is that the bike is faxiable and I am fine, so my whining is minor.

You are LUCKY beyond belief. An illegal Mexican with insurance is a scare as hens teeth. Go buy a lotto ticket.

You may want to contact Wompus and let him know that his rack essentially saved your bike from serious damage. May be a great selling point for him. Sure speaks to the quality of his work.

I am glad that this all worked out for you.

Now that I think about this, hopefully his insurance will pay. Usually those policies exclude coverage for illegal acts and driving without privleges is an illegal act.

The report shows that the guy who hit me had no license. They are covering my damages - all they can do with a disclaimer of no coverage if the policy holder has no DL is refuse any coverage for the policy holder's losses. Hopefully the thing will be settled and a check cut in the next few days and my repair parts are ordered. I told the shop to order the tour pak in black and I'll get it painted later this winter. I'm hoping to be back on two wheels in a week and a half or two weeks since the repair labor is pretty much just replacing the rear fender with a new pre-painted Kawasaki part. and then I'll do the work of mounting and wiring the new tour pak. My new Wompus rack will be made to hold the trunk at an inch and a half lower than the normal womous rack so the back rest and speaker pods are at the same height versus the passnger seat as it would be on a Harley.

I got the check from the Dumbazz SUV driver's insurance company. Kawasaki says the parts are on the way. Time to find a new Tour-pak and order my Wompus Rack! I hope to be back on the road by next weekend, probably with the backrest while I find a trunk.

New tourpak on order from H-D and I should have the bike under me before next wweekend. What a long month....
